What was the name of that 90′s cartoon on ABC (Australia)?

I have super vague memories of this show but i remember it was very dark, mysterious and possibly gloomy. it involved a female lead i think and they were living in the past, possibly late 1800′s. my strongest memory is of the start, it was a flat world which was held up by all these animals standing ontop of each other (turtles, elephants, a few others).

It was on i think after school during the mid-to-late 90′s.

any help would be great, ive been wondering the name of this show for years but it has eluded me
