Another year of Winter X-Games is here, and the fans of action sports and winter sports can once again come together in harmony. At least we hope.

With star after star trying to push the envelope with every trick, this year’s event will be the wildest in the storied history of the X-Games.

Snowmobile Freestyle Final (Thursday)

Anytime you get a snowmobile going full speed, I’m already sold on the event. Add in tricks and you have a dangerous enough event that the whole family can enjoy.

It’s hard enough to imagine controlling the motor vehicle at those high speeds, but making these giant machines do flips and tricks in the air is something that’s too cool to miss.

Snowboard big Air Final (Friday)

Now, I first fell in love with this event at the summer X-Games with the skateboarders, but something about doing it on snow makes this even cooler (see what I did there).

With huge trick after huge trick, this is the kind of event that could get even non-fans of the sport watching as athlete after athlete hits mind-rattling moves.

Men and Women’s Ski SuperPipe Final (Saturday)

while I have never been a fan of skiing, when those athletes get on their skis and hit that superpipe, they are something to watch.

as cool as the halfpipe looks when the snowboarders shred it up, the skiers have a whole different bag of tricks worth keeping an eye on.

The Whole Sunday Lineup

ESPN was smart to set up all the best events and their finals on the final day of the tournament so that fans at home could make sure they were safely secured by their television. nothing says Sunday like extreme sports.

not only will X-Games fans have two skiing finals on Sunday, they will also have two superpipe snowboard finals as well as the best trick competition for the snowmobiles. I know where I’ll be on Sunday.

Greg Kelly Son of NYPD Commissioner Accused of Rape: The Manhattan District Attorney’s office is investigating a rape allegation made against Greg Kelly, the son of New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, a law-enforcement official confirmed.

The younger mr. Kelly, 43 years old, is co-anchor of “Good Day New York” on Fox’s New York affiliate. Andrew Lankler, an attorney for the newsman, said the younger mr. Kelly “is aware that the New York County District Attorney’s office is conducting an investigation. mr. Kelly strenuously denies any wrongdoing of any kind and is cooperating fully with the district attorney’s investigation. we know that the district attorney’s investigation will prove mr. Kelly innocent.”

Paul Browne, a spokesman for the police department, said the allegation came to light after a man approached the police commissioner at an event and told him “your son ruined my girlfriend’s life.” Continue Story…

Florida GOP debate: 7 takeaways

by on January 26, 2012

JACKSONVILLE , Fla — This was Newt Gingrich’s last chance to shine on the big stage before Tuesday. it did not go as hoped.

Gingrich and Mitt Romney were supposed to be the main attractions, but Rick Santorum and Ron Paul won notice at the 19th GOP debate, hosted by CNN at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

Below are POLITICO’s seven takeaways:

1) This was the “Trading Places” debate

For a 120 minutes, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich essentially traded roles — Romney, often meek and shrill-sounding as he defended himself this cycle, became the aggressor, and Gingrich, who’s played the debate hall crowd like a musical instrument in the past, seemed to shrink from the attacks.

Romney came with balled-up fists to the debate stage, and swung hard at Gingrich during the first few questions — in the exact fashion that the former House Speaker has typically gone at the front-runner.

It worked. Romney had the thing that has eluded him most this cycle — a “moment.”

The former Massachusetts governor, apparently having gotten the message that Florida’s outcome could be political life or death for him, slammed Gingrich hard for a now-pulled radio ad in which he described Romney as “anti-immigrant.” a newly-confident Romney called the charge “repulsive” and even demanded an apology.

The crowd, in its first roar of the night, loved it — and Romney was off and running.

Even if there were moments where Romney could have hit Gingrich even harder — he left the former House Speaker’s support for the individual health care mandate untouched, for instance — he still gave the most confident answer he’s given to date on being proud of his successes, sounding something close to comfortable, for the first time, discussing his wealth.

Nevertheless, he made mistakes — saying “I have a trustee” and declaring he’s never voted for a Democrat if a Republican was also on the ballot were among them, neither of which were necessary to say or helpful to his cause. Two other fumbles: His “doubting” that a negative ad against Gingrich is being aired by his campaign (it is) and his answer on taxes, which got very in the weeds about his money manager.

But it’s the first half-hour of almost every GOP debate that’s set the tone for the rest — so the debate counts as a victory for Romney, who needed to keep the momentum from moving away from him again.

2) whither Gingrich?

It was Gingrich who needed to recapture his momentum and he simply couldn’t do it.

For someone who has made performances in debates central to his candidacy, this was an unusual night.

The former House Speaker, appealingly pugnacious to GOP voters in past debates, simply seemed worn out and off point. gone was the brawler who could whip up the crowd. and it’s not quite clear where he went.

He never raised any of the well-worn phrases he’s used to define Mitt Romney on the stump — “Massachusetts moderate” comes to mind. he also bypassed an opportunity to hit Romney over his Massachusetts health-care plan.

Gingrich’s pushback against Romney over the immigration issue simply failed to connect. he initially tried to avoid repeating his criticisms of Romney’s now-closed Swiss bank account on the debate stage — something he’s hit him for on the trail in the last few days — and attempted to retreat toward defending the entire GOP field from the mainstream media’s divisive questions.

GOP debate: Five things to watch for

Washington will be focused on Haiti this week, two years after the earthquake that devastated the country.

Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami, introduced a resolution calling for the United States to work with the Haitian government to end gender-based violence. Deep-seated gender discrimination and violence against women and children have long marred Haitian society, Wilson said, but those living in displacement camps and other impoverished communities have experienced increased vulnerability to sexual and other forms of gender-based violence.

"Now is the time for the United States to renew its commitment to Haitian women and children, and for us to make the issue of ending gender-based violence a priority for both our countries," Wilson said.

Her resolution would reassure the people of Haiti, particularly vulnerable women and children, that the U.S. remains a committed partner in the fight to end all forms of gender-based violence in Haiti. It also encourages the Obama administration, through the State Department and USAID, to support the Haitian Government’s proactive steps that are consistent with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights’ recommendations on sexual violence in IDP camps, to eliminate gender-based violence. Finally, it reinforces the efforts of the Haitian Government as it contemplates comprehensive legislative reforms aimed at eliminating violence against women and girls.

Meanwhile, in an open letter to Florida's Haitian community, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., called on fellow Floridians and the American people to "recognize what is at stake for us in Haiti."  Fresh off his first visit to the country, Rubio pledged to share what he had learned there with other senators. he called for accountibility in how U.S. money is spent in Haiti, and said that he'd had both an "eye-opening" and heartbreaking" experience, but one that was cause for optimism. the full letter here

"I believe it is in the United States’ best interests for Haiti to consolidate its democratic institutions and reclaim its destiny as a more prosperous and stable nation," Rubio said. "This is important for our own security and prosperity. in essence, we cannot have a failed state in our hemisphere and especially one that sits at the crossroads of air and sea commerce in the Caribbean and in close proximity to our shores in Florida."

METUCHEN, N.J. (AP) – Robert Hegyes, the actor best known for playing Jewish Puerto Rican student Juan Epstein on the 1970s TV show “Welcome back Kotter” has died. he was 60.

The Flynn & Son Funeral Home in Fords, N.J., said it was informed of Hegyes' death Thursday by the actor's family.

A spokesman at JFK Medical Center in Edison, N.J., told the Star-Ledger newspaper that Hegyes, of Metuchen, arrived at the hospital Thursday morning in full cardiac arrest and died.

Hegyes was appearing on Broadway in 1975 when he auditioned for “Kotter,” a TV series about a teacher who returns to the inner-city new York school of his youth to teach a group of irreverent remedial students nicknamed the “Sweathogs.” They included the character Vinnie Barbarino, played by John Travolta.

The show's theme song, performed by John Sebastian, became a pop hit.

Hegyes also appeared on many other TV series, including “Cagney & Lacey.”

He was born in Perth Amboy and grew up in Metuchen, the eldest child of a Hungarian father and Italian mother.

He attended Rowan University, formerly Glassboro State College, in southern new Jersey, before heading to new York City after graduation. he returned to Rowan on several occasions to teach master classes in acting, a university spokesman said Thursday.

“He was a good friend to the university,” spokesman Joe Cardona said.

Hegyes continued to act after “Kotter” and was a regular on “Cagney & Lacey.” he also guest-starred in shows including “Diagnosis Murder” and “The Drew Carey Show.”

On his website, Hegyes wrote that he was inspired by Chico Marx, whom he had played in a touring production of a show about the Marx Bros. he also recalled how his mother encouraged him to get involved in theater as a teen.

ASPEN, Colo. – Years ago, when life was much simpler, Shaun White was just a snowboarder – and occasionally a skateboarder. now, he designs his own clothing line, and he has put his stamp on his own halfpipe. plus, he’s captivated by the beginnings of an acting career.

the “Flying Tomato” usually has so many off-the-hill commitments that he’s not able to spend more than three hours a session in training, but that doesn’t concern him during the Winter X Games, which started Thursday and runs until Sunday on Buttermilk Mountain.

A back-to-back Olympic halfpipe gold medalist and 11-time Winter X champion, White, of Carlsbad, Calif., remains confident about the prospects of keeping his hold as the most dominant snowboarder in the world, despite an injured left ankle he suffered in a morning practice run. White hobbled away from the pipe after medical staffers tended to him, then he was cleared for Saturday’s slopestyle competition and Sunday’s superpipe final.

White hopes to compete at the 2014 Sochi Games in both snowboarding events – nobody has come close to beating him in the pipe, and slopestyle is new to the Olympics. the last time White, who holds a record 16 Winter X medals in superpipe and slopestyle and five Summer X medals in skateboard vert, tested his slopestyle skills on Buttermilk, he took 13th place – fuel for a superpipe gold won using his trademark double McTwist 1,260.

No longer is White slowed by the lingering effects of minor surgery on his foot in March, and he dubbed Winter X “the place where we want to display what we’ve been working on. this is where I want to come. I want to do my best tricks. I want to show all the fans what I’ve been working on. I want to show the other riders what I’ve been working on.”

There’s no disputing that White feels comfortable in his own skin, high-fiving a parking-lot attendant nicknamed “Mud Flap” on his way into Wednesday’s workouts. he bought beer recently for employees in Breckenridge who shut down parts of the park so he could practice. and if his 25th birthday party, in September, wasn’t enough fun, he had a blast playing himself last year in a movie that featured Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis.

White said he’s “entertaining” several additional film offers, however, he declined to give specifics. “It was something brand new for me,” he added. “I enjoyed it. It was nice to be out of my element, standing on the side of a movie set, figuring out what to do.”

When White isn’t running around with his French bulldog, Rambo, he devotes a lot of his energy to halfpipe plans, with a 500-footer he helped conceptualize opening this month at Lake Tahoe – the result of a deal he signed with Vail Resorts in August. White made a pit stop this month on Conan O’Brien’s show, his mustache shaved and his hair in a bun. “It was a big play by me,” White said of his hair, joking that “Cinnabon called” afterward.

Ignoring some criticism from snowboarding purists, White still rocks a Burton collection that’s sold at Target, appearing earlier in a black sports jacket and a black scarf that were covering a beige shirt to complement tight black jeans and black leather shoes. He’ll wear a leather jacket into the pipe again, banking on an identical vibe he experienced last year.

“It’s similar but a little bit different,” White said, noting he “took the same leather jacket, and I just took (off) the whole chest panel and have this black denim look going. I kind of like it because every time I fall, it gets a little more ripped up. It’s looking pretty rugged.”

NEW YORK — Joe Namath has mellowed from his party-boy days, but there’s one thing he’s not planning to change: his sharp opinions about the New York Jets.

On Wednesday, speaking after the premiere of the HBO documentary, “Namath,” at the HBO Theater, he expressed some regret about criticizing his former team, which he’s done often over the last few months but insisted he’s just telling it like it is.

“I feel awful about it, I feel awful about my relationship with the Jets right now,” Namath said, referring to owner Woody Johnson, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan. “I don’t want them upset with Joe, but damn it, I have to say what I see, what I think, what I feel. I think they can do some things better, no doubt.”

Namath believes the problems stem from the franchise’s leadership, not embattled quarterback Mark Sanchez, who has been criticized in recent weeks by teammates following an 8-8 finish that left New York on the outside looking in at the playoffs.

“Mark made some mistakes this year, no doubt, but he can play,” Namath said. “It’s only his third year, man. you see guys out there who have played longer than that, making those same mistakes. He’s going to learn from his mistakes and he needs the help around him.

“He presses at times, he wants to do things because he’s expected to, and I think he got a little tired of being, ‘The kid this, the kid that.’ Hey, he’s made it through three seasons now, and he’s not a kid. He’s a man out there. He’s a man and, if they get the people around him, he’s going to be fine.”

Namath did not say Sanchez needs to be a better leader because he doesn’t believe a quarterback can boss around his linemen.

“I didn’t push any kind of leadership,” Namath said. “Lead by example as a football player, as the quarterback: to know the plan frontwards, backwards; be able to answer; know my guys; convince them I was ready and would give it my best. But no taking over a locker room. you have to have someone with the strength of the guy over in Baltimore — maybe Ray Lewis — you’ve got to be a beast to do that kind of thing, man.”

Namath mentioned New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning and how he turned around his career. Manning has won one Super Bowl and will play in a second Feb. 5 against the New England Patriots.

“How about our man, Eli?” Namath said. “Hey, excuse me, he wasn’t exactly welcomed with open arms and … standing ovations those first few years. he endured. He’s tough, he’s wonderful and he’s improved … Eli is better than he was three years ago, two years ago. right now, mark Sanchez is going to better than he was this past season.”

In “Namath,” a revealing documentary that recounts the legendary quarterback’s incredible life from Beaver Falls, Pa., to Broadway, there’s a part about Namath maturing in his fourth season and becoming a team leader. “Enough Playboy,” former teammate John Schmitt recalls saying to Namath.

Maybe there’s a lesson in there for Sanchez.

Demi Moore Hospitalized After Inhaling Whip-its full Of Nitrous Oxide: Demi Moore was doing “whip-its” — a type of nitrous oxide inhalant — before she was rushed to the hospital earlier this week, TMZ reported.

The troubled actress became semi-conscious and had symptoms of a seizure after inhaling a dangerous amount of nitrous oxide — a gas typically inhaled by young people looking for a cheap high — a friend told paramedics who attended the scene, the gossip site reported.

The 49 year old was rushed to the hospital from her home in Los Angeles late Monday night, before checking into a treatment facility Tuesday to reportedly seek treatment for substance abuse.

Her rep said that she was seeking “professional assistance to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health.”

However friends of the star said she went to rehab because she is “emotionally and physically exhausted” over her painful split with Ashton Kutcher, who is “acting like a teenage boy,” the New York Post reported.

One friend told the newspaper that Kutcher, 33, who was spotted partying with Brazilian supermodels Monday at Sao Paulo fashion week, continues to flirt with women while still calling his ex “when he is at a low moment.”

“Demi was talking to Kobe Bryant at a CAA Golden Globes party, and Ashton came over and made a scene,” the source told the newspaper. “he made jealous comments to Kobe, then Ashton went to the bar and was openly flirting with other women.” Continue Reading…
