A Difficult Woman To Know

by on January 5, 2012

Men look at themselves in a mirror. Women look for themselves. – Elissa Melmed

I admit it. I have a love/hate relationship with the Proverbs 31 Woman. at times she inspires me to no end. yes, who can find a more virtuous, capable woman? She is an exquisite portrait of a truly remarkable and lovely woman, wife and mother. at other times I want to know where she lives so I can toilet paper her front lawn. Anyone who makes Martha Stewart look like a slacker has serious issues. I am sure she has never had a bad hair day. She probably doesn’t even know what cramps are. Her foot never finds its way into her mouth, repeatedly, like mine. the meticulous woman would almost certainly be aghast at my dusty floors then would give me pointers on housecleaning. I am sure she would then wash my floors herself like some deranged Mary Poppins. What a show-off

I have often compared myself to this epic woman whom we will call Prov. She is like that tall, beautiful model trying on the exact same clothes as you. You compare your assets with hers and find yourself seriously lacking. as you gaze in the mirror, your reflection looks pitiful next to hers, like a speck of sand against the breathtaking superstar. according to the Bible, not only does Prov do everything perfectly, but all around her think the same. Plus she has the husband and children surrounding her. For us single ladies, we feel even more inept. we hope that our singledom gives us the blessed loophole from trying to be everything Prov is. Does my empty ring finger give me a Get-Out-of-Proverbs-31-Free card? as I read and study about Practically Perfect Prov (her formal name), I am inundated with questions. What is a woman’s worth? What is my value? Does a woman have merit if no one is there to acknowledge her capabilities? why does she have to be so flawless? And why is God pressing on me to examine her?

A mother wrote this discourse on the most excellent of women in the hopes her son would recognize a Godly wife when he saw one. Generations later and these 22 verses have become a checklist for some and for others a carnival mirror that distorts perception. I read about Prov and grow tired as I remember the dirty dishes in the sink and the spider webs in the corners of the ceiling. I tell myself that I don’t want to be like her, but secretly I crave to have someone say those things about me. Someone determined she was of great importance and value. I think that is what I am most jealous of. the Bible says Prov has excelled over all other women. She has surpassed Deborah, Ruth and Esther. She has outdone Miriam. She outshined them all and she is the ideal that I am to live up to. Are you serious? Susan? yes, God?

Obviously He was tired of me talking smack about Prov. Do you even know what it means to be a virtuous woman? Pure, perfect, capable, high morals, quiet, and always polite. on a good day, I am maybe two out of five. That is what the dictionary says. Dig deeper, Susan. You might actually like her. Wait, God, I have so many questions. You usually do. God, what is my worth? You will figure it out. Susan, meet Prov. And so began my character study of this exceptional and highly irritating woman that had taken up residence on a pedestal.

Like any difficult person, once you get to know them and what makes them tick, your opinion softens and you see something of yourself in them. or in this case, you discover components that are missing in yourself. I have found myself housecleaning my soul and spirit and she is the tool God is forcing me to use. how convenient that this investigation started during the days of Omer. the second day of Passover is the beginning of Firstfruits and the counting of the Omer which lasts the next 49 days leading to Shavuot or Pentecost. the Israelites would take the omer or grain, and divide it before it was winnowed and sifted. then it was parched over a fire. After the heat, came the refining and grinding followed by another thorough sifting. Eventually the best of the best grain was brought before the Lord and waved in His Presence as an offering. It was a declaration that everything came from God.

It was also a spiritual assessment of where each person needed to examine themselves. They took stock of their lives, emotions, choices and habits. was their life a pleasing and sweet fragrance to God? the Israelites had left behind their physical and spiritual bondage in Egypt on Passover. those first days in the wilderness were opportunities for them to improve and upgrade who they had been. They didn’t know the particulars, but they understood God was taking them where preparation was paramount. those days of counting their lives and actions were the biblical version of a makeover show. God calls us to be a holy nation. Do we look holy? Do we act like we are set apart for His use? Being holy is about being separated and elevated from all that would pull us down and take our focus of the Lord.

Comparing myself to Prov, I know my habits and actions need to be examined. Where do I fall short? the omer of my life needs to be sifted and refined. So I am choosing to take stock of me. Am I a pleasing aroma to the Lord or with one good whiff do I clear out the heavenly realms? Have I concealed areas of my life that stink with air freshener in order to disguise them? I’m pretty sure I will find things that I don’t like about myself, but this house needs a transformation. Like the grain offering, I will be sifted and ground then toasted on a relentless fire. I want to present myself as a new offering to God. as I look in the spiritual mirror before me, I am seeing the ways I don’t measure up. there are a few blemishes in my heart that have been covered. sometimes the hardest person to study is the one in the mirror. maybe Prov isn’t as a difficult woman to know as myself. this is me, God. For better or worse, I am yours. I am nothing like Prov. maybe that is why she gets on my nerves. I want to be like her, but don’t know how. there is a lot of distillation and mending to do, but this is my start. Have your way, Jesus. Make me over.

The Israelites were safely situated in the unfamiliar wilderness. God had confirmed His covenant with Moses. the commandments had been given. the golden calf incident was still a smarting sting in their minds and Moses had seen God’s glory through a cleft in the rock. now the building of the tabernacle, God’s dwelling place, had begun. God had given specific instructions for each piece and the blueprints were divine. God even anointed the people to do the work. once it was completed, the temple work began. the priests would come to the bronze laver. They washed their hands and feet in the basin in preparation to meet God. the washing bowl was made with the mirrors of the women who served the tabernacle. They weren’t pretty, clear mirrors made of glass, but were polished brass. the imperfect surface did not give a smooth likeness.

As a tabernacle priest would wash, he saw two reflections. one was in the stand and one in the cleansing water. the laver is where they truly looked at themselves with all the bumps, bruises and imperfections in plain sight. then they looked into the water that washed them. this is where they became the reflection of Jesus and left the old likeness at the door. Like the women who gave up their mirrors so a priestly nation could see who they really were, God asks us to do the same. He says, Give up what you think you look like to the world and focus on what I look at. So often we concentrate on the inadequate image that we forget there is a sanctified figure in the Living Water.

How hard it must have been for those women to give up their mirrors. Let’s face it; mirrors are sacred properly to us females Women have always been described and categorized by how they look. All women, no matter the era, have some degree of vanity within them. God moved them to surrender their airs by giving up control of their pride. Looking at ourselves in the mirror can be one of the hardest things to do. Mornings can be especially difficult since we more than likely have gunk in our eyes, smeared makeup and unkempt hair that has a mind of its own. once we see what is amiss, we begin to put it back together again. how many times do we check our appearance throughout the day? every potty break includes inspecting the mirror. we walk past department store windows and cast a sideways glance at the image just to ensure that we haven’t left the house with our skirts tucked into our underwear.

There is one woman who would be more than happy to give up her mirror. I can only imagine how hard it was for her to look at the face staring back at her. She didn’t need to be reminded of what the world saw; she had been hearing it her whole life. look at how she is depicted in the Bible: Leah had weak eyes, but Rachel was lovely in form, and beautiful. can you imagine the wound to a woman’s heart if she knew that her less than attractive appearance was still being talked about a few millennia after she walked on the earth? Ouch I freak out when people talk about me the next day not to mention the next millennium.

What did it mean that Leah’s eyes were weak? some Jewish scholars say her eyes were pathetic because she cried so often about her circumstances. Perhaps she was ill, or maybe she was just plain ugly. the word used for weak means to be liable to give way under pressure. It comes from a Hebrew word meaning to faint, to have a dismal and weak appearance. there was no sparkle or breathtaking quality to Leah. She was less than average. Saying she had weak eyes was the polite way of saying she had a good personality. no man would choose her. Her father Laban was probably very vocal about his burden to offload his first born daughter.

Leah might have already accepted her fate as a spinster when in walks Jacob. everyone knew he was head over heels in love with the striking Rachel. It was no secret that he had been working for the past seven years to marry her. Finally the day had come that would pay off for Jacob. All the back-breaking work in the hot sun was a distant memory as the thought of his bride filled his heart and mind. Laban threw a wedding feast for the big event. one can’t help but wonder how long he had been plotting the next events. Laban lead his new son-in-law to the bridal chamber. Jacob was probably skipping with anticipation and nervousness. Seven years of daydreams were coming true.

Who knows where Rachel was kept or if she was even made aware of the dastardly plan. Leah had taken her younger sister’s place either by choice or by a father’s forceful hand. maybe Leah felt guilt for stealing her sister’s moment, but then again a lifetime of being jailed in someone’s shadow may have helped her overcome any momentary remorse. Rachel captured every gaze as she entered a room while Leah was inconspicuous and unremarkable. She was not easily seen; someone had to choose to see her and no one had. this was her moment to be noticed even if it was stolen attention. Feelings of pitiful sadness had to be flowing in her heart. the only way I can get a man to choose me is by my father tricking him. A bride is to feel so beautiful on her wedding day, but this was probably the ugliest she had ever felt.

Jacob did not detect the switch. maybe it was the veil covering Leah’s face, the amount of wine in his system, or a combination of both that made him unaware of the true identity of the bride lying in his bed. not realizing it wasn’t the love of his life, Jacob treated Leah like beautiful, stunning Rachel. For one night the unsightly woman was deemed remarkably exquisite. Perhaps in the course of the night, Jacob called out the name of Rachel in ecstasy, but Leah chose to ignore it. Leah was finally touched by hands that coveted her. She was whispered to by lips that craved her. Leah was beautiful that night. She was no longer invisible, but the totality of one man’s attention. She didn’t want the truth that comes with the dreaded morning light to ever show its repulsive face. if only time could be stopped.

Jacob woke to find the weak eyes of Leah and not the remarkable face of Rachel lovingly gazing upon him. He was anything but tactful. with shock and anger he shouted, What have you done to me? I served for Rachel, not Leah why did you deceive me? I have been cheated the pleasure and acceptance she embezzled in the night was replaced with the reality of her worth to Jacob. She was unsolicited and undesired. She was once again the ugly woman who only looked good after enough wine and a veil. Leah knew she was the raw end of the deal. His love was so great for Rachel, Jacob chose to work another seven years for her. He was willing to work a total of 14 years for her sister. no one had even offered to work a single day to win Leah. A week after her momentary joy, she witnessed Jacob marry Rachel.

Leah was not the one who was loved most. She held on to a brief ray of hope within her because Jacob still came to her bed. Leah was probably the backup when Rachel was considered unclean every month. God saw that she was unloved and opened her womb. with the birth of her first son Reuben, she was sure her husband would love her, but nothing had changed. with the next two sons Leah continued to hold onto the fantasy of being treasured. by the fourth son something in her had changed. She gave birth to Judah and cried out, now I will praise the Lord. It stopped being about a man’s love and about loving God. Sarah, Rebekah, and Rachel were barren until their prayers succeeded in changing their nature. Leah’s barren heart was altered after her praises unto the Lord succeeded in transforming her soul. She still battled Rachel in the offspring race, but her heart was settled.

She didn’t know her worth, but God blessed Leah more than she would ever know. Rachel might have been the wife of Jacob, but Leah was the wife of Israel. From her son Levi came a tribe of priests that would man the tabernacle and temple. Israel was built in the house of Judah. through Judah came the line of David and eventually Jesus. through all the pain, toil, and heartbreak, God was planning to redeem her. God loved her where Jacob failed. In God’s eyes, Leah was precious and had value.

As women, we have worth. It might be hidden, but it is there. the Bible says the price for Prov was far above rubies. everything in this world has a price tag. an amount has been determined and set. From towels to people, everything has a decided fee. In Uganda, a bride’s price is set by the number of cows a family thinks their daughter is equal to. In some cultures it is the number of children a woman bears for her husband that decides her estimation. Jacob’s price for Rachel was 14 years, but God’s value of Leah was priceless. She became the mother of God’s chosen people. if God uncovered Leah’s inestimable value, He will also expose ours. What is our value and worth? What is God seeing that we miss? What did Jesus see in us as He was on the cross? So much of our value is assessed by how we look. some men also look at our housekeeping and cooking skills to accurately price us, but let’s be honest. A man will marry the world’s sexiest and most beautiful woman if given the chance even if she keeps a messy house and can’t cook soup from a can.

As women, beauty can control our life. It did for Leah. It determined her marital status for years before Jacob came in the picture. What happens when we are not a physically beautiful woman or we don’t fit the world’s definition of good-looking? how do we get past the world’s ruling on our significance and focus on the importance God places on us? I struggled for the majority of my life about my appearance. somewhere about the age of 15, I encountered the world’s snobbery when it came to beauty. For the next few years, well into college, I was truly a geek. I was overweight, self-conscious, and completely believing the enemy’s lies. at school I heard boys tell me I was ugly, but then my Mom would tell me I was beautiful. I stopped trusting my Mom’s opinion because she obviously was either blind or lying to me. on days when I knew pictures would be taken, I would get dressed up and do my hair and makeup. When I looked in the mirror I felt somewhat self-assured, but when the pictures came back I cringed, this is how I look? So many mornings were spent in front of the mirror in hopes that something would change. I excelled in school subjects while my sisters surpassed in attractiveness. I would have traded my A’s for just one day of prettiness. the mirror became my prison and my perceived value was worthlessness. then I became Born again and had to confront my feelings of inadequacy.

First of all, who do we belong to – the world or God? the world didn’t create us; it merely influenced the opinion of ourselves. God fashioned us and it is His estimation that matters and should define ours. God doesn’t make mistakes and He doesn’t make ugly. yes, some of us are not the picture of a model. we do not have the hourglass figure and the flawlessly proportioned face and flowing long hair not to mention that come hither look, but we have something better. God will make beautiful the humble with His salvation (Psalm 149:4, KJV). That kind of beauty transcends time. the world’s version of loveliness is conditional and can fly away at any moment. Imagine the most beautiful model in the world. every magazine wants her ideal image on the cover. Men all over the world desire her. What if she was in a disfiguring accident? the covers would be gone and the men’s attention would gravitate to her successor. That kind of beauty lost its conditions.

In describing Prov, Proverbs 31:29 says that outward beauty has no real significance or value. It is fleeting at best. Godly beauty has no conditions to be met or lost. When Psalm 149:4 says God will beautify us, picture the opening of a seed to reveal the magnificent interior. Inside a seed is potential for greatness. Inside of us, no matter the outward appearance, there is magnificent promise and capability that God has planned to reveal through Jesus Christ.

Inside of us is Godly beauty. I know, I know. we all want, at least once, to feel like the most beautiful woman in a room. my fantasy is walking into a ballroom in a splendid dress. I imagine every eye turned towards me, this breathtaking creature, and I hear over the chords of music, Who is that? That is my Cinderella fantasy that gets me through the last 10 minutes of every workout. What I truly want is to be the stunning woman that enters heaven to worship my Creator. the world’s opinion only lasts for a moment, but Jesus’ estimation lasts for eternity. That is where I try to keep my focus.

I have never seen a painting of Jesus depicting an ugly man, but was He attractive to the eyes? Rabbi Ralph Messer of Simchat Torah in Parker, Colorado is always quick to point out that Jesus was not, a blond-haired, blue-eyed Malibu doll. Isaiah 53:2 says that the Messiah would not have beauty or majesty so that people would choose to follow him for that reason. nine times out of ten people will follow the lead of a handsome person as opposed to an ugly one. Remember high school? God wants us to see His heart, not His physical attributes.

David wrote in Psalm 27 that he asked one thing of the Lord. He wanted to dwell in His house forever simply so he could look upon the beauty of the Lord. When we worship God and discover His beautiful magnificence, we discover ours for we are made in His image. It might take a bit of uncovering, but it is there. From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth (Psalm 50:2). Israel’s beauty was complete and set. why? because God resides there. if God dwells in us, no matter what the schoolboys say or the magazines decree, we are beautiful. we exceed the normal. God calls us a perfect beauty. Is your life producing beauty? if a certain mineral supplement was determined to remove wrinkles and sun spots without side effects and the results would be instantaneous and it was free, we would run to the store and stock our vanity cabinet. the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of us is the ultimate cure for ugly. God makes everything beautiful and bright in His time.

God has a concept of beauty and it has nothing to do with our faces and figures. When Samuel was searching Jesse’s house for the next king he stopped at Eliab. He was a handsome young man, but God said to not be caught up with the outward appearance. Sarah was such a beautiful woman that when she was old Abraham lied to Abimelech because he was afraid her great beauty would cause his demise. That was how stunning she was. yet for all her outward adornments she still lacked faith and even laughed at the promise God gave Isaiah about Isaac. was she truly a beautiful woman in God’s eyes? how does God describe beauty? It is a matter of heart. David was beautiful because of his heart for God. Moses was handsome due to his willingness to hand over the steering wheel of his life. Ruth was exquisite due to her loyalty. Noah’s trust made him attractive. Daniel had his steadfastness and the woman with the alabaster jar had her love for Jesus to define their splendor. the focus of Paul to run the race no matter the circumstances made him a lovely creature to behold.

For some of us, it isn’t the big nose, extra weight or oily skin that deems us unattractive, but it is a sin that makes us unsightly. Sin not only separates us from God, but it casts an ugly shadow upon our hearts until we have repented and have acknowledged the forgiveness Jesus has already given us. Have you ever spied a truly repulsive person? You still remember that face. For me it is a character in a movie that I bring to mind. I can’t forget the way they looked. God isn’t like us. He does not remember our revolting sin any longer. whatever ugliness that sprouted from a sin, Jesus has removed the blemish.

It was after the golden calf incident and a series of mistakes that Moses cried out to God, if I have found any favor in your eyes. That word found means to acquire. the word favor means graciousness, but also beauty. In essence, Moses was asking, if I have acquired any beauty from You, please show me your ways. Teach me. Does your eye behold any beauty in me? if you have found yourself after your own golden calf moment asking God if He sees anything of worth and beauty in you, the answer is yes. Moses got to see God’s glory. So will you.

You are a beautiful woman. God says so. we might feel like Leah, trapped in another’s shadow. That is because we are staring in the mirror of unfinished product. the mirrors on the laver were merely pointing out the places a person was incomplete. Our value is in the reflection of the cleansing water. That is where we become priceless like Leah.

This is what this journey is all about: looking at ourselves truthfully and fixing what needs to be fixed. I am trading in my vanity and handing God my mirror. He will show me what is flawed and in need of improvement. He will also identify those things that need to not just be remodeled, but have to be downright destroyed. God, like the army, persuades us to be all that we can be. It all starts with our reflection. I want to overcome what I have seen and perceived. sometimes mirrors are like the ones in the laver and are distorted. They are more like a funhouse mirror casting a false picture of who we are. They either make us look better than we are or worse. we need God’s honest view of who we are. Our beauty lies in His heart.

Beloved, let’s remember worth is simply the fullest extent of one’s value and ability. Only God knows what your fullest scope is. He won’t let us extend past what we are capable of. as for me and my house, I will remember my worth and that in God’s eyes, I am greater than a ruby. the world isn’t concerned with telling us we are worthy. A man doesn’t give us significance. Our children aren’t searching for our importance outside o their personal needs. It is God that knows our worth and determines our value. the love of God in us creates our beauty. Will you join me in handing God your mirror?

MAIJU AND JUUSO go off on a day trip to the Rob Roy Centre and give Mikey a lift to Stirling for his train back to Dundee.

Would have been nice to go with them but there’s too much stuff needing done. Margaret gives the house a good tidy up and I head to the office to try and solve the server issues surrounding my new website.

After a few more hours of pulling my hair out I eventually get things running in a kind of a way. a lot of the database stuff seems to have been corrupted or messed up in the transfer and upload processes but at least the core technical functions are operational.

It’s dark by the time Maiju and Juuso are back so we sit round the fire and have a couple of beers before dinner.

After we’ve eaten we decide to finish off the whisky tasting we started yesterday! We watch a DVD of Rory Gallagher live at Cork Opera House while we work our way through the remaining whiskies and Maiju keeps track of our ratings/scores.

The running order – starting with our favourite and  ending with our least favourite goes like this….Glenlivet, Loch Lomond, Benromach, Glenmorangie, Glen Grant, Glen Moray, Old Pulteney, Whyte & McKay, Dalwhinnie, Bells, Glenfiddich, Tomatin, Auchentoshan and Edradour. Phew! That was quite a few over two nights…

Elton John says he has a first choice to play him in the planned biopic Rocketman: Justin Timberlake.

“He played me before in a David LaChappelle video of 'Rocket Man' and was superb,” Sir Elton told the Los Angeles Times. actually, the video Timberlake appeared in was for “This Train Don't Stop there Anymore,” in which he portrayed a Rocket Man-era version of Elton John. (And was pretty convincing – check it out below.)

The film is “going to be a surreal look at my life, and not just a factual look at my life,” says the singer, “more in the manner of a Moulin Rouge!” an announcement is forthcoming about will direct, he added. The Rocketman script is being written by Lee Hall, who wrote Billy Elliot; Sir Elton will produce.

In the meantime, HBO is set to air a documentary directed by Cameron Crowe on the making of The Union, the recent album collaboration between Elton and his musical idol, Leon Russell. Sir Elton plans to go into the studio for his own next album this month.

Timberlake, meanwhile, has been linked to a potential role in the next Coen Brothers film, Inside Llewyn Davis, which is reportedly set in the Greenwich Village folk-music scene of the Sixties.

Fug or Fab: Emmy Rossum

Rumor has it Emmy Rossum is good in Shameless, or, as I like to call it that Show That’s the Reason William H Macy’s Hair looks so Crazy All the Time now:

Rumor also has it that she’s topless in that show a LOT, which may explain why she decided to swing the other way entirely and show up at this event in a pantsuit. now, I am not actually anti-pantsuit: if it was good enough for Agent Scully, it’s good enough for me (note: there are many things which were good enough for Agent Scully that I don’t want to actually HAPPEN to me, up to and including aliens putting a nose cancer-causing chip in her neck). and I love this color on her, AND I would like to applaud the fact that, for possibly the first time ever in the history of this website, she’s posing with her mouth closed. HEAVENS BE PRAISED.

With just over a week to go until the Iowa Caucus, the GOP nomination is still pretty wide open. Although some things have been cleared up, Iowa is still very volitil. GOP hopefuls have not spent as much time in Iowa as in recent years and do not have as many people on the ground. they are instead relying on the many debates and more internet campaigns. Voters in Iowa, like in new Hampshire often relish these face to face encounters that they have had the privilege of in the past elections and many make their decisions based on these encounters. the lack of interaction will lead to more volatility. Now for the state-by-state breakdown:

Iowa- It doesn’t seem like Iowa will be as much of a swing state as in the past. Whoever wins will probably not blow anyone out so it could still be wide open after Iowa. Ron Paul has been leading in the polls and his supports are way more likely to vote for him than say, Newt Gingrich. If Paul doesn’t win, then it is up to Romney, Gingrich, and Perry. Out of these three Perry has the most to gain, As Romney can look good anywhere, plus he’s got new Hampshire coming up, he can afford a second, third, or even fourth place finish. If either of the other two win it will most likely be a lateral move as each have support in South Carolina and new Hampshire. Paul would benefit greatly from a win, But a Perry win could really bring some momentum to a campaign that has been in a free fall since the week after he entered the race.

New Hampshire-It is a little more clearer here, but it will still be a huge state for several second-tier candidates. Huntsman could go a long way in extending his campaign and a surprise win by anyone else could do the same. Huntsman has put all of his eggs in new Hampshire’s basket and if he finishes in the top three his campaign might last until after Florida depending on what he does in South Carolina and Florida. a win for Huntsman would create a real fight in Florida for some Independents and Blue Republicans. a Romney win would simply reaffirm him as what he is- a top rate, intelligent candidate-and perhaps loosen him up a little. new Hampshire being a pretty liberal state, Independents will play a huge part in anyone’s win and hardcore GOPers will probably dismiss whoever wins as a ‘progressive’. Excpect for either Bachmann or Santorum or both to drop out if both have bad showings in Iowa and new Hampshire.

South Carolina-So far the most conservative state. look for Gingrich to have a great showing. Romney will probably also have a good showing. If Huntsman does well in new Hampshire he will be hard pressed to keep the momentum going in South Carolina as he has very little infrastructure in South Carolina and look for him to drop out after this, although if he pulls of a miracle and does well in SC he might have a lot of momentum going into Florida.

To wrap it all up it is a crapshoot. Romney is looking good and so could a lot of other candidates if they get some pieces to fall into place for them. In the end it will be Romney against someone to be named later. And that someone might be able to give Romney a good fight.

Gaslight Political Mind Manipulation

Who can forget the classic movie; when Ingrid Bergman plays the role of a woman who is married to an unscrupulous man, who attempts to drive her insane so he can have her committed to an insane asylum, so he can have access to the fortune which has been secreted in her own attic This scenario has been played-out off the screen many times as well. Even today, we have seen these tactics used by our own politicians against us; they hope by discrediting the American people by their radical and personal slurs, they can cow the people into letting them do as they please, so they can remain in power, and to enable them to change the fundamental fabric of our nation. no longer are we a nation governed by the people; we are now rudely asked to be silent; while they do with our country what ever they desire. those that speak out against them are called mobs, stupid, miss-informed, and only working as pawns, controlled by some greater entity, with no mind of our own. they have the country (our country), headed toward financial ruin; those that control the money, have always controlled a certain percentage of the voting populace, but now the control does not simply come from our own shores; it is worldwide, quite frankly the big money no longer comes from those who wish us well; it comes from those who do not

For years we were told that the Republicans were for big business, and that the Democrats were for the poor people, and the middle classes, this is a fallacy: since the day that the first politician was paid for their labor, we have been moving into the false system whereby gain equals reward: Their gain, and their reward.the common people are only given enough to keep them relatively happy, but never enough to be secure; their labors must be rewarded in someway, or else they will not work This has always worked out for the most part, because in the past their was always enough wealth to keep everyone fairly content in their perspective socioeconomic level, but now wealth is dwindling; after all, wealth is never found within the vaults of our banks; you can’t eat money There are simply too many people upon the globe for the available natural resources; we are simply running out of stuff.

Even the people who champion financial and governmental reform; do not truly understand the philosophy of those that are really the driving forces behind these proposed changes. We have become a consuming nation; we really don’t produce anything anymore: we buy foreign goods, and most of our economy is based upon the extrapolation of wealth from our own people. Who, most of which merely consume food, shelter, and other commodities, which others have worked to produce. This is important: we no longer produce, we consume. the only way the truly powerful and wealthy; can continue to remain in power and wealth.is to begin forced distribution of the dwindling natural resources; food, shelter, energy, and other commodities. This will need to be done under a different form of government; than we have had in the past. they need to totally take our freedom first: freedom of speech; freedom of choice, and our other liberties must go are all of the people who want change bad? no, when the environmentalist petitions or protest for a clean environment; they do not understand why certain political, and financial power houses wish to assist them. when people strive to increase access to affordable health care for the poor; they don’t wonder, or care; why they are being supported by the entities which fund and encourage them. People believe: that if their own motives are sincere, and their cause seems righteous: all others who are supportive of their ideas are sincere as well.

The government has looked with envy upon the money; that is deducted from your paycheck for health coverage each week. they have long recognized that this is an enormous source of potential revenue. it does not take a genius to figure out; that if the government takes the money, and at the same time, is the governing authority that regulates when benefits are paid; we have another major source of income for these people to grant Largesse (large gifts) to the poor, and [big] business; to keep them in power. Will look at the plan next

What is Largesse? it is when; those in power begin the practice of granting (voting) large gifts from the public treasuries; our elected officials are [now] doing this; on a scale that has heretofore never been seen, they are attempting to remain in power, by our means (using our money), and not upon their own merits. We must understand: both political parties have some decent members; not all of them have ulterior motives, but many do; however, many do not realize; that they are being manipulated by corrupt thought. Notice I said corrupt thought, and not necessarily corrupt people; although they do exist. What has happened is that our collective mind, our very cognitive process (way of thinking) has been changed. We have been totally desensitized: if we expect corruption from our politicians; why are we surprised to find them to be so?

I realize ours is not the perfect form of government, but to many around the world it has been the most perfect. We have been told like children we are a corrupt people; television teaches us that we glorify those individuals with no morals. People, who find worldly wealth and honors by unscrupulous means, only prove that we have lost our moral compass. People get the leadership they deserve; we have regressed into largesse.greed rules the day.greed of money, and power, dictate peoples opinions. you can tell when a paid political pundit speaks their party’s lines, ‘they don’t even believe their own words’

All who attempt to manipulate your mind, and change your opinion, don’t do so maliciously; many manipulators have themselves been manipulated. Remember, corrupt thought degenerates people, and changes their views; corrupt people do as well, but not as surreptitiously as our own minds. the President of the United States may truly believe in his proposals, but.none are so blind, as those that will not, or can not see We are all products of our own environment; we cannot escape the moral, social, and environmental, teachings of our youth. We cannot always accept what we hear as being the truth.we must ask questions. There are many reasons why it is more difficult to be manipulated today: We have access to instantaneous information through the internet, and twenty-four hour news coverage via the cable networks; where in the past we had one hour of news each night, and the print media alone to give us our information. We have always been told what the rich and powerful want us to hear, but now.if we’re smart; we can find the truth by making our own inquiries; up until now.we have not taken the time, but now we must be diligent, and seek the truth. One of the most often used methods of mind manipulation is called imprinting; this is done by continuously repeating the desired behavior, thought, or idea, over and over.until it has been accepted as the truth. A lie, often enough repeated, soon becomes more acceptable, and before you know it; is accepted as the truth. Haven’t you ever told someone something, and then had it retold to you by the same person, who totally forgot where they heard the though or idea in the first place; this is a form of imprinting

The truth of the matter is: the manipulators have themselves been manipulated. regardless of your political affiliation; we have lost the ability to see the things; that years ago, were so clearly incorrect; God must be allowed back into the political process; we were blesses once as a nation; we were founded upon the bedrock principles of faith; we have been manipulated into believing that there is some provision in the Constitution; which disallows the mention of God, or that somehow, we aren’t supposed to pray in a public place, or at an event controlled by any federal, state, or local government: This provision. the Separation Clause, is not in the Constitution; you know the one you hear so much about: it says, That the Government cannot establish any religion, or show partiality, to one religion over another, and that individuals are guaranteed the right to practice what ever religion they may choose. paraphrasing of course. This clause has been corrupted to promote certain liberal ideas to mean: God may have nothing to do with [state] affairs; this is a fallacy, Congress, and the Senate’s sessions are mandated to be opened by prayer; our founding fathers quoted the scriptures, and mentioned the Creator in our founding documents. This clause: the First Amendment was placed into the Constitution to preclude the involvement of the Church; in the affairs of state, as they had been previously in Europe; where the Church was empowered to arrest you for heresy, tax, dictate the official religion, and act in many ways, as a form of government within themselves. This was the purpose of the First Amendment, not what you have been told think for yourself; don’t be manipulated.Send it on; copy the link; email a friend; get the word out.be free

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A new Ohio Attorney General’s report showed that only 52 percent of companies that received Ohio taxpayer-funded economic development awards that ran out in 2010 kept their promises to boost the economy.

The report, released Thursday, identified 200 companies that received grants, tax credits and other awards from the Ohio Department of Development that did not meet their goals for job creation, job retention or other measures.

The awards to non-compliant companies totaled more than $82 million.

Department of Development officials said the 52 percent compliance rate is unacceptable, but they pointed out that 63 companies were categorized as non-compliant simply because they had not yet turned over enough information to the department.

“I won’t tell you that a 50 percent compliance rate is good,” said Chris Schmenk, who became the department’s director in August. “what has occurred in the past has been unacceptable. we have a new sheriff in town.”

The department is attempting to recover the money in some cases but in others, including a $3 million grant to Whirlpool, the department has forgiven the company and is not seeking repayment. Whirlpool’s obligation was forgiven because the company’s ultimate investment of $221 million was four times its original target, a department spokeswoman said.

Due to the recent economic downturn, some of the non-compliant companies received an extension to meet the conditions of their award.

An overhaul of the development department was among Republican Gov. John Kasich’s top priorities when he took office at the beginning of the year.

With the help of the GOP-controlled legislature, Kasich privatized the department’s economic development operations under a new corporation called JobsOhio. The report released Thursday covered awards handed out in years before Kasich took office.

Of the 420 companies included in Attorney General Mike DeWine’s report, 220 met their obligations.

The attorney general’s analysis of Ohio’s economic development awards is a relatively new product.

To provide taxpayers with greater transparency, lawmakers passed a measure in 2008 directing the attorney general to perform the analysis.

Last year’s report, prepared by former Attorney General Richard Cordray, showed about 90 percent of companies that received economic development awards from the state fulfilled their job creation and job retention requirements.

Cordray’s analysis, however, was based on voluntary surveys that companies submitted to the attorney general’s office, according to a Lisa Hackley, a spokeswoman for DeWine. only about 25 percent of the companies responded to the survey, Hackley said.

DeWine’s office took a different approach. rather than survey companies, it obtained information about the awards from the Department of Development, then analyzed the information to determine if the companies met their obligations. (Note: A previous version of this story referenced a margin of error that does not apply to the compliance rate.)

“in these challenging economic times, it is critical that Ohioans know whether companies receiving public money or tax credits from the Ohio Department of Development are delivering on their promises,” DeWine said in a statement. “I am pleased to provide this analysis of our findings to provide a benchmark for performance and to ensure transparency for Ohio taxpayers.”

Schmenk, the development department director, said she was encouraged that her department was able to provide detailed information for the analysis. She pledged next year’s report will show a higher compliance rate, but she did not provide a specific target.

“It’s got to be significantly higher,” she said.

Nearly half of companies that received Ohio economic development awards didn’t keep promises to boost economy, study shows

“I wish I had been more effective in being able to communicate the central rationale of my campaign, which is strengthening the economy, getting better jobs, raising incomes,” he told me. but “as a candidate I spent a good deal of time answering questions about social issues.”

Romney was saying, in effect, that if he ran again—and even then, everyone who didn’t reside under a boulder knew that Mitt was already dreaming up a sequel to 2008—he wouldn’t try to be all things to all voters. Instead he would immediately brand himself as Economy Man and cling to that brand for the rest of the campaign.

He did, he has, and it has made all the difference. Twenty months later, on the eve of the Iowa caucuses, I attended a pair of 11th-hour events that showed how well Romney’s approach has suited this year’s peculiar Republican race: Mitt’s own speech at a Competitive Edge warehouse in Clive, and the rally of his once-inevitable rival, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, at the Hotel Pattee in Perry.

The two congregations had a lot in common: same red-white-and-blue banners, same high-wattage sound systems, same country-rock soundtrack. (Rick chose George Strait’s “Heartland”; Mitt prefers “Born Free” by Kid Rock.) but the similarities stopped there.

What was remarkable about Perry’s event was how all-over-the-place it was, as if his campaign were simply trying to touch every Republican base, to stroke every erogenous zone, before the clock struck midnight. there was some maudlin musical warbling, courtesy of one of the Gatlin Brothers; there was some red-state solidarity, courtesy of Govs. Bobby Jindal (Louisiana) and Sam Brownback (Kansas). When Perry finally took the stage, he lurched from subject to subject like someone with a particularly acute case of political ADD. one moment he was recounting the military travails of his supporters Marcus Luttrell, a Navy SEAL, and Dan Moran, a former Marine captain, and claiming, in hushed tones, that “what this is all about” is ”supporting these young men and women … when they come home”; the next, he was reciting the entire 10th Amendment from memory; and the next, he was deploying Isaiah 6:8—“I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, here am I; send me”—as a metaphor for his run. it was all there: the military, the Constitution, the Bible—the whole Republican gumbo. but you never got a sense of who Perry was, of how he was different from that Generic Republican Candidate pollsters are always asking about, or why his fellow conservatives should vote for him instead of Michele Bachmann or Newt Gingrich.

Romney’s rally couldn’t have been more different. His toothy family—wife Ann and sons Tagg, Craig, Josh, and Matt—tried to warm up the crowd with anecdotes about life in the Romney household. but the candidate wasn’t going to be distracted. he immediately attacked President Obama for not “getting us working again,” and the rest of his remarks focused exclusively on matters of money: “a government that is borrowing too much”; the power of his “private-sector experience”; the need to make “America once again the most attractive place in the world for entrepreneurs”; his plans to “balance the budget,” to “get our tax code right,” to “throw out all the Obama-era regulations,” to “open up new markets for America,” and “clamp down on” China’s “cheating.” you get the idea. none of it was particularly novel or particularly specific. but all of it was about the economy, and all of it reinforced the Romney brand.

Mitt Romney

Khue Bui for Newsweek

Monday’s rallies were a reminder that it didn’t have to be this way. For all his focus, Romney, in person, was clearly the less compelling, the less viscerally appealing, of the two candidates. His remarks were frantic, almost harried; he seemed eager to check his boxes and get offstage. At times he jammed so many numbers into his speech—“$787 billion,” “8 percent,” “25 million people,” “$4 billion,” and “three times as much” in the first few sentences alone—that he began to sound like a walking, talking quadratic equation. And when he tried to strike a sympathetic note with “people who are looking for work,” it came off as tinny and flat. Perry, meanwhile, was far clearer, and far more confident, than he ever managed to be during the debates; when he spoke about his faith, his states’-rights ideology, and his admiration for our men and women in uniform, it was with the perfect pitch and precision timing of a born raconteur.

Romney recognized early on that in a crowded, confused field, he didn’t have to overcome his charisma deficit; he simply had to identify the electorate’s most widespread concern—the economy—and corner the market.

Values voters are unlikely to lift him to victory in a bad year for social issues, but he can make Mitt Romney very uncomfortable.

sullivansantorum.banner.getty.jpg

Let’s get one thing straight. When the margin between candidates is eight votes, there is no such thing as first or second place. but even as the GOP presidential campaigns waited to hear the final results from Tuesday’s Iowa caucuses, one result was certain: Rick Santorum can claim victory as the social-conservative candidate of 2012.

Many fought for the title over the summer and fall of last year, as Iowa’s conservative evangelicals and Catholics fielded posies and promises from first Newt Gingrich, then Michele Bachmann, then Rick Perry, then Herman Cain, and then Gingrich again.

Santorum emerged victorious on Tuesday, winning support from 30 percent of evangelical voters, who themselves made up 57 percent of caucus-goers. (Entrance polls did not identify Catholic voters, but Santorum swept most of the counties in western Iowa, which is heavily Catholic.)

His embrace by socially conservative voters was not primarily the result of old-fashioned retail politics — Santorum held hundreds of events in Iowa without his poll numbers inching much above the low single digits. nor was it a matter of fortuitous timing, as virtually the only candidate who had not yet been the flavor-of-the-month.

Instead, Santorum won the hearts of social conservatives by being their favorite from the start. Back in October, I wrote a column noting that Santorum — a conservative Catholic — was the obvious choice for purist social conservatives, and quoting political scientist mark Rozell: “If I’m a conservative non-compromising Catholic, then I probably like Rick Santorum and want to give him support in order to make a statement.” as I noted at the time, very few Catholic voters seemed interested in using their vote to make a statement in 2012. They were turning away from the earnest, intense Santorum in favor of more electable options.

But when the electability of the others faded, Santorum became the “why-not?” candidate. those caucus-goers who said that “strong moral character” mattered most to them backed the former Pennsylvania senator on Tuesday night and made him the closest thing to a consensus social-conservative candidate that this race has seen. he has already siphoned off much of Bachmann and Gingrich’s support, and seems likely to capture Perry’s voters as well if the Texas governor drops out of the race, as expected.

Will Santorum’s emergence alter the outcome of the GOP nomination fight? It’s unlikely. in the almost forty years since the emergence of the Christian Right, no social-conservative favorite has captured the nomination. (George W. Bush was an establishment candidate before he was the social-conservative darling.) and as for the momentum of Iowa, ask Pat Robertson, Pat Buchanan, Steve Forbes, and Mike Huckabee how well strong performances in that state translated into votes elsewhere.

This is a particularly bad year for social conservatives who yearn for a candidate of their own to win — or at least influence the nomination process. according to entrance polls at the Iowa caucuses, voters divided fairly evenly among three criteria when asked what they were looking for in a candidate: conservative principles, electability, and strong moral character. that division helps explain the caucus results: Ron Paul did best among those who prioritized conservative principles, Romney among those looking for electability, and Santorum among those who cared most about morality.

On those questions, evangelicals look much like the general Republican electorate. while Huckabee won Iowa with 46 percent of the evangelical vote in 2008, born-again Christians were much more splintered this year. The majority remain concerned about social issues, and they backed Santorum. but a significant portion — 20 percent — voted for Ron Paul, a reminder that evangelicals care about more than just social issues.

Nationally, Santorum will be hampered not just by the near-absence of a campaign organization outside Iowa but also by more direct electability questions. this is, after all, a man who lost his Senate re-election campaign in 2006 by an astounding 18 points. nor is he known as a strong leader on the economy, a serious handicap in an election that promises to focus heavily on that issue. Only 19 percent of caucus-goers who named the economy as their top issue supported Santorum, according to entrance polls.

Additionally, Santorum — like Huckabee before him — draws criticism Republicans who deride him as a “big-government conservative.” in debates, he has defended the level of foreign aid in the federal budget, and he opposed Cain’s “9-9-9″ tax plan on the grounds that it would eliminate the earned-income tax credit.

But even if Santorum is unlikely to be the next GOP nominee, he and his supporters have the potential to make trouble for Romney. It’s important to note that Romney failed to increase his percentage of the caucus vote from 2008, despite the fact that he endured very little in the way of attacks from his opponents.

Newt Gingrich made clear in his speech Tuesday night that he intends to go on the attack. It’s not hard to imagine that Santorum will do the same. Romney may not want to talk about his past and current positions on abortion issues or the fact that his health-care law in Massachusetts provides direct government funding for abortions — heresy for social conservatives. but given Santorum’s new prominence in the race, he may have no choice.
