Godfather Media Inc., an entertainment holding company in Mission Viejo, has bought majority interest of the independent professional baseball team Orange County Flyers.

Click here or on the Flyers jersey to see some of the Major League Baseball players and TV stars who have been associated with the team.

Godfather Media also owns the Yuma Scorpions, another team in the North American Baseball League. the company, whose shares are traded on the pink sheets, acquired 60 percent of the Flyers for 12 million shares of Godfather Media restricted common stock.

The Flyers did not play during the 2011 season and the sale was not completed in time to schedule any home games in 2012, so it will play approximately 60 games on the road, said Dan MacLeith, one of the investors who retain minority interest. Actor James Denton of the TV show “Desperate Housewives” was another investor.

“It’s not that unusual for an independent team in any sport to go dark,” MacLeith said. “Sometimes they relocate, change direction or staff and then re-launch.”

The Flyers, once called the Fullerton Flyers, has had some former Major League Baseball talent over the years. the late Gary Carter, Hall of Fame catcher, was manager when the team won the 2008 Golden League championship. Darrell Evans was the batting coach that year. Garry Templeton was manager in 2007. former Angel Scott Spiezio played for the team in 2009.

Godfather Media CEO Michael Cummings said in a prepared statement, “This is a great addition to our new business strategy, and our goal is to continue to grow rapidly through strategic acquisitions, such as the Orange County Flyers… we have acquired an asset, which I believe will yield a significant return to our shareholders.”

Over the past six seasons, the team averaged approximately $650,000 in annual revenues, according to Godfather Media, which focuses its investments on growing sports, entertainment, mobile and social media companies that have experienced management teams and strong competitive positions in their industries.

Independent baseball leagues had been sprouting around the country in the early part of the 2000s.

The Bay Area-based Golden Baseball League was backed by Silicon Valley venture capitalists and started by a couple of Stanford MBA students. at one point it had 10 teams including the Flyers.

But the recession hit discretionary entertainment spending hard, and many of the teams disappeared. the Golden Baseball League merged with the Northern League and United Baseball League to form the North American Baseball League in 2011. it has 10 teams including the Flyers. Another Golden Baseball League team, the Long Beach Armada, suspended play after the 2009 season.

Independent baseball teams get their money from ticket sales (25%), concessions (25%) and sponsorships (50%). the local investor group bought the Flyers in 2006 and lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in 2007, according to then General Manager Alan Mintz.

The investors agreed that independent baseball experience is more intimate and fun for fans than Major League Baseball. Kids can go on the field. a family of four can watch a game and eat for less than $50. and the playing talent is strong in Southern California. Employees, from players to salespeople hope the independent experience will lead to an MLB job some day.

MT. JULIET, Tenn. –

Stoner Creek Elementary School in Mt. Juliet displayed their Nashville Predators spirit during a pep rally Tuesday afternoon.

The Predators hosted the rally as a reward to the school for having the most Predators Pride.

“The Preds hosted a contest to see what school in Middle Tennessee had the most Preds Pride and they submitted this photo that showed the entire bleachers behind me filled with kids… actually you can hear them now, just glowing with Preds pride,” Mike Dargin, director of youth marketing for the Predators, said.

The students learned about hockey equipment, helped color a Predators banner, competed in relay races and even played street hockey with Nash, the Predators' mascot.

The Predators are used to going to schools.  they went to over 40 different physical education classes this year with their Hockey Rules Program.

“We present the PE class with some hockey, so we literally show up and take over their classes for a couple of hours and put the sticks in kids hands and let them play the game of street hockey,” Dargin said.

The students were not the only ones having a good time Tuesday.

“A lot of us are huge fans. We have season ticket holders [and] we have people who go [to the games] when they can, anything they can do to get down to the game,” fourth grade teacher Jorie Gerik said.

The Predators take on the Detroit Red Wings in game four of the 2012 Western Conference Quarterfinal series Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m.

Red Sox honor 100-year-old fan

by on April 20, 2012

For a Red Sox fan just out of high school, there couldn’t have been a better summer job. John Donnelly is 100 years old now. But back in the 1930s, he was thrilled to become a candy vendor at Fenway Park.

“I was one of the ‘candy butchers’ walking up and down the aisle with a basket on my head,” he said on Friday, shortly after the Red Sox finished their 100th anniversary game at baseball’s oldest stadium, a 6-2 loss to the Yankees.

“At the time, Loft candy bars were selling for 15 cents against Hershey’s 5-cent candy bar. the same size, but a much thicker chocolate,” Donnelly said. “I remember one extremely hot day, walking up and down with the bag of candy on my head. when I went to pass the candy to customers, it was all melted. the candy bar actually drooped on both sides of my hand. and yet the people paid me the money and took them. I’ve never forgotten that.”

The only problem was that Donnelly enjoyed his work just a little too much.

“I only lasted the one summer, and the reason was I spent too much time watching the ballgames, so they didn’t renew my contract,” he explained with a laugh.

Donnelly was honored at Fenway on Monday, part of the program to recognize a series of fans as old as one of the most famous sports venues in the world.

Donnelly was given a commemorative baseball cap, calendar and book. and he proudly read from the letter he received at the time.

“Dear Mr. Donnelly, on behalf of the Boston Red Sox, I want to say thank you for spending your 100th year with us at Fenway Park. We are honored to be part of your life’s journey on this day. I’m sure you’ve seen your fair share of games throughout the years, but we hope today can be just as memorable as some of your past highlights as a fan. I hope you enjoy the game, and that you continue to be a great icon for your family and friends,” he recited.

Donnelly was sitting just beyond first base on Monday but, with the heat, was moved into the back of the grandstand.

“That was much more comfortable, and I enjoyed the game very much. it was an experience,” he said.

“I was amazed at the construction, the extra decks and the seating that were never there back in the old days. They have utilized every available bit of space for seating.”

Growing up, Donnelly played baseball, football and hockey in high school. and while he preferred participating in sports to watching, he attended plenty of games both before and after his brief employment there.

“We sat out in the bleachers. Twenty-five cents,” Donnelly said. “I belonged to what was called the Knot Hole Gang. You had a membership card with a picture of an old wooden fence with a knot hole in it, which you were supposed to look through to see the game. that and 25 cents got you a seat in the bleachers.”

Born and raised in West Roxbury, Mass., Donnelly has been a lifelong Red Sox fan. He first remembers rooting for the Ted Williams-era teams, and later loved watching the Carlton Fisk clubs.

And, yes, Donnelly was in front of his television on Friday for the historic centennial game.

“I saw the first five innings before I had to go to dinner [at his assisted living facility],” he said.

But Donnelly made sure to find out the result.

“I understand they lost, 6-2,” he said with the equanimity of a longtime fan who knows there will always be another game tomorrow.

You’ve got a lot of options for what to watch and how, and we want to help you plan your weekend with a new column where we’ll highlight three things you can see in theaters, three things you’ll find streaming, and three titles new to home video.  Appropriately enough, we call this The Weekend Watch. It’s the calm before the storm. right around the corner now, summer gets started.  There’s something happening every weekend from now until September.  this is it.  For me, the summer started about a week ago when I saw "The Avengers," and I’m hoping to be able to write about that soon.  I’m going to be writing up this summer’s movies as they start screening, and I’m also planning to write about the Alamo Drafthouse "Summer Of 1982" films all summer long.  Add that to the ongoing "James Bond Declassified" series, and you’re going to have quite the reading list here this season. so what’s opening this weekend, when all the studios are just getting ready, revving up, preparing to unleash the things they’ve got planned for us?  What’s streaming?  What should you be finding on Blu-ray or DVD? IN THEATERS TODAY okay, so here’s where I look at the list of films coming out today and realize… I didn’t see one.  not a single movie that opens this week.  I just plain missed them. "The Lucky One" I had to look it up to see who’s starring in it (Zac Efron), who’s releasing it (Warner Bros) and who made it (Scott Hicks!), and it simply somehow never made it onto my radar.  When I brought it up to my wife tonight, though, she was absolutely aware of it, and she wants to see it.  As soon as possible.  I may end up paying to see the film because of how interested she is.  I have to admit, it surprises me to see Hicks doing this.  I think "Snow Falling On Cedars" really hurt him in his momentum.  "Shine" was a pretty big announcement, a pretty specific kind of energy, and so far, he hasn’t come close to that on his other work. "think Like A Man" I’d like to know the backstory on why I’ve never heard of "Hurricane Season," the last feature that Tim Story directed, after he made two "fantastic Four" films and the modestly charming "Barbershop."  that was three years ago, and whatever happened with it, he appears to have had some time off, and he’s back with something that looks more like "Barbershop" than his superhero stuff.  It’s not a straight adaptation of Steve Harvey’s book, which is more like advice and relationship material.  I’m curious to see if Kevin Hart’s huge stand-up audience follows him over to this.  I’m also curious to see if Chris Brown’s personal baggage translates to an audience reacting in some way, recoiling from his presence in a romantic comedy. "Chimpanzee" this is the second film coming out this weekend that I am absolutely sure I’ll be paying for in the theater before Monday.  my kids love the ad campaign for this and the only reason we haven’t seen it yet is because the screening was the same time as one of Toshi’s baseball games. I like that Disney is getting back into the nature documentary business.  I grew up watching their True-Life Adventures all the time, and they made an impression on me.  good documentaries that encourage our kids to think about their place in the world… those are important.  those matter.  And so far, Disney aspires to that sort of filmmaking with their Disney Nature series of films.  I haven’t loved these movies, but I like them, and I like what they represent. Besides, if you see it this weekend, they give some of the box-office take to the Jane Goodall Foundation.  And that’s a good thing. ALSO NEW IN THEATERS THIS WEEK: "to The Arctic 3D," "Darling Companion," "The Moth Diaries," "Marley," "Jesus Henry Christ," "Goodbye first Love," "Fightville." ON STREAMING THIS WEEK "Sleepless Night" (Amazon Instant/rental only) you want to see a great action movie this weekend?  this was one of the highlights of last year’s Toronto Film Festival, and it’s a gripping thriller with one of the best senses of action geography I’ve seen in a while.  my full review is here, but I strongly urge you to see this before it gets remade, because it seems like it’s being buried for the American market, a sad mistake. "Marley" (Amazon Instant/rental only) Yep, the same film that you can see in theaters this weekend (and, boy, is that release date a snickering weed joke that disrespects Bob Marley’s musical legacy) is also available as a streaming VOD title today.  Kevin Macdonald’s documentary has the approval of the Marley family, so don’t expect it to take any shots at his lasting reputation, but that should mean access to a wealth of material previously unseen, and I’ll be checking this one out myself via my PS3 at some point this weekend. "Chop Shop" (Netflix Instant) Director Ramin Bahrani’s look at life on the margins tells the affecting story of an orphan living on the streets, making his living off of abandoned and salvaged scrap, and watching him try to find a way to build a life for himself and his sister is a powerful experience, and was largely ignored when it was released in 2007.  It’s a great movie, and precisely the sort of film you should be using Netflix to discover. ALSO NEW ON STREAMING THIS WEEK:  Netflix – "Electric Light Orchestra: out Of The Blue – Live at Wembley," "please Remove your Shoes," "La Cage Aux Folles," "Bob’s Burgers: Season one," "Hulk vs.," "The Invincible Iron Man," "Thor: tales Of Asgard," "Ultimate Avengers," "Ultimate Avengers 2." Amazon Instant – "Underworld Awakening," "Worried about The Boy," "Penumbra," "Thin Ice," "Robotropolis," "Shame," Death Of A Superhero," "Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol," "Jesus Henry Christ," "The Divide," "Kevin Hart: Laugh at my Pain." ON HOME VIDEO THIS WEEK "Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol" (Blu-ray) You’ll have to go to best buy if you actually want any extra features on the Blu-ray, but even if you don’t, you’ll still end up with a great action thriller that proves once again that Brad Bird is, indeed, the bomb.  I hope Tom Cruise hangs with this franchise forever, because so far, he’s turned out two great movies, one movie I like a lot, and John Woo’s worst moment.  not a bad batting average. "Roger Corman’s Cult Classics: The Nurses Collection" (DVD) Shout! Factory does a great job with their double, triple, and even quadruple feature releases of drive-in movies, and this one is a trashy hoot, especially since you can get it from Amazon for less than twelve bucks. "Buck Privates" (Blu-ray) this was the breakthrough moment for Abbott & Costello as movie stars, and this special Universal Blu-ray release, part of Universal’s 100th Anniversary program, is a startlingly good transfer.  I had no idea this movie could look this good, and watching it with my kids, they were entertained greatly by the film’s comedy and by the ktichen-sink approach to movie-making it represents, with musical numbers, a love story, and pro-WWII propaganda all jammed in together.  I find it sort of amazing that there’s a four-year-old in my house who would now consider himself an Andrews Sisters fan, but there you have it… the eternal appeal of Bud and Lou. ALSO NEW TO VIDEO THIS WEEK: DVD – "7 Below," "The Asphyx," "Ernie Kovacs – The ABC Specials," "The Super Hero Squad show: Vol 3." – Blu-ray – "Frozen Planet," "High Road to China," "IMAX: Born to Be Wild," "Operation Condor 2: The Armour Of God," "Roadracers," "Shame," "Treme: The Complete second Season." "The Weekend Watch" appears here every Friday.

(CBS News) SANFORD, Fla. – George Zimmerman is set to come face to face with the parents of Trayvon Martin for the first time Friday at a court hearing that could result in his release on bond.

Zimmerman has been behind bars since his arrest nine days ago, charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of the unarmed 17-year-old. he has claimed self-defense in the deadly Feb. 26 encounter. Martin’s parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, believe their son was murdered in cold blood.

On Friday, mark O’Mara, Zimmerman’s attorney, will ask a Florida judge to free his client on bond pending the trial, though he has expressed concerns about Zimmerman’s safety.

“I don’t think he needs to or should stay in jail while this case is pending. I want him out and safe, and I’m not sure where safe is going to be yet.”

Special Section: Trayvon Martin ShootingZimmerman’s safety a concern if new judge grants bailFlorida to examine “stand your ground” lawJudge steps down from Zimmerman murder case

Zimmerman, a 28-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer, asked for a private meeting with Martin’s parents. he has never communicated with them before.

And Benjamin Crump, their lawyer, said Thursday that it won’t happen now and maybe never.

“We believe Zimmerman’s request at this time is very self-serving, some 50 days later, the day before the bond hearing,” Crump said.

Under Florida law, Zimmerman is ineligible for bond. But this hearing will allow O’Mara to test the state’s case. and special prosecutor Angela Corey must show proof that Zimmerman’s guilt is evident and his presumed guilt is great — a very high standard — or circuit Judge Kenneth Lester can grant bond.

When asked to make the case for bond, O’Mara said his client presents no flight risk.

“Bond is there to make sure the person comes back for trial. Bond is not there for pre-trial punishment. so he should be out on bond. He’s going to come back. Quite honestly, if George Zimmerman was going to run, it would have happened in the last few weeks.”

O’Mara will also point out Zimmerman has ties to the local community; in fact, his parents will phone in on his behalf. he also has never been convicted of a crime and has been cooperative with police, staying in daily contact before his arrest and turning himself in after murder charges were filed last week.

Corey could decide not to challenge the bond request, rather than lay out her case.

And Zimmerman, facing a possible life sentence, could walk free as soon as later Friday. If freed, he could be restricted to his local community and may have to wear a GPS ankle monitor.

King David knew the importance of God’s word that was why he called his son Solomon and told him this beautiful words of advice my son, attend to my words; incline thy ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. for they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh (Proverbs 4:20-22). Paying rapt, undivided attention, to the Word of God that comes to you is in your best interest. the same way a pupil or student of an institution of learning is expected to attend to his studies in order to make good grades so God expects of us to give attention to his Word so that we can be successful in life.

Many a times you hear Christians get to say I didn’t really understand the sermon, the reason is not far fetch they didn’t give their attention to the Word, they are distracted by other thing. in the parable of the sower Jesus gave the answer to this as the sower went about sowing seeds, some fell on the wayside and the fowls came and devoured them up: when anyone heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. this is he which received seed by the wayside (Mathew 13:4,19). this is why most life are empty, not with any sense of direction nor substance, not that the Word didn’t have the power to save but the recipient couldn’t just get focused enough to received the Word because it has now to him become just a speech, some well defined ideology by the preacher put into words. Success in life is not dependent on the number of degrees you bagged in college; it’s in the amount of God’s Word you know and put to work no demon will listen to you because you have a Ph.D. neither will sickness, disease nor cash crunch bow to anything else except the Word of God.

It’s so compulsory for us to give all attention to the Word of God. his Words are life unto those that find them and health to all their flesh. the Hebrew word translated ‘health’ is medicine. He’s telling you that the Word of God is medicine to your flesh. if you take the Word into your system, it will produce divine perfect health in you. it will get rid of your migraine headache, it will get rid of the cancer and destroy every unwanted growth in your body. God’s Word is infallible and can meet every need; as you receive it and open your heart to it in faith, it produces for you what it talks about. God’s Word will do a miracle inside you as you give attention to it today.

Putting Wholehearted Devotion To God’s Word

According to the LA Times, both Tim Tebow and Dwyane Wade were booed when they attended yesterday’s Yankees/Angels game in the Bronx. from the YouTube video below, we only hear evidence (courtesy of ESPN’s announcers) of Wade being booed. We’re also privy to an extended silent moment between the two, as Wade checks his smartphone and Tebow distracts himself with a Yankee program.

More from the Times:

Sure, there were a smattering of cheers from Jets fans and probably some random Tebowmaniacs in the stadium. but apparently the crowd consisted mainly of New York Giants fans — and maybe a few worried supporters of Jets starter Mark Sanchez –as Tebow received a loud Bronx cheer when the giant video board showed him.

The poor guy was even wearing a Yankees cap.

Tebow’s reported reaction? he just smiled. which is about all you can do when you’re getting booed by thousands of people from the Bronx.

Tyra Bankswent on a firing spree and axed all three of “America’s Next Top Model” judging panel.Long-time personalities, Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J. Alexander have been given pink slips.

The men were told yesterday that their contracts would not be renewed. Tyra confirms the report via her Facebook page with the following statement:

“To my Nigel Barker, miss J, and mr Jay: thank you for all of our years together on America’s Next Top Model,” Banks wrote. “Working with you is always an absolute pleasure. Excited for what the future holds for us.”

The shocking decision comes as a result of wanting to go in a new direction, the modeling competition, which is rumored to be that of a “college” route. Page Six reports that the show’s producers are looking to add reputable fashion bloggers to the panel to lend the program a more social vibe.

Commenting on the major shake-up, miss Bands, the show’s host and creator, tweeted, “Fierce & love 2 my @NigelBarker, @MrJayManuel & miss J. #ANTM turned us in2 a family. Excited for what the future holds for us. XOXO TyTy.”

This special Earth Day post is by the Chair of the AAA Task Force of Global Climate Change, Shirley Fiske.

The annual tradition of honoring Planet Earth is coming up again on April 22nd.  Even though the founders of Earth Day claim international reach and support, it seems to me its essence is quintessentially American.  Earth Day as a custom embodies the Western world view of the environment as the “other.”  On Earth Day we tend to objectify and celebrate our Environment Earth and do green things for a day, like recycling.  One of you (us anthropologists) out there has probably done a study of it Earth Day in its cultural context.

Knowing that I was going to do a blog spot on Earth Day for the AAA, I found myself musing about what Earth Day means to us with my friend Fani – also an anthropologist.  Nowadays musing over coffee really means Skyping, because she is in Georgia.  But we mused nonetheless.

We discovered that neither of us has ever been to an Earth Day event, even though they are ubiquitous over the years.  I worked for the federal government, and every single agency has special events and activities devoted to Earth Day – of course in concert with their mission, whether it’s housing or clean oceans.  why haven’t we been to any Earth Day celebrations and how broad is that experience?

After all, Earth Day will be celebrating its 42nd anniversary this year, the first one being April 22, 1970.  On its web site, Earth Day organizers link the event to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970.  In fact the 1970’s were marked by bipartisan support for far-reaching environmental laws, in part due to Rachel Carson’s book The Silent Spring but also growing awareness of human’s impact on our streams, rivers, and air. 1970 marked the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.  a whole raft of environmental management laws were passed in the 1970s.  The National Environmental Policy Act was passed in 1969, the clean Air Act in 1970, the Coastal Zone Management Act and the original clean Water Act in 1972, the Endangered Species Act in 1973, the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act 1976, and 1976 the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act for solid waste management.

Arguably the 1970s were the last time we were able to agree as a civic society and body politic on the importance of the environment in multifaceted and sweeping way.  certainly the attempt to deal with climate change policy—another opportunity to affect sweeping environmental changes—ended in a dismal failure (but how that happened in the topic of my next blog).

Why haven’t we been engaged?  my friend Fani opined that she never felt motivated to go to Earth Day events.  She grew up absorbing all this stuff.  She and her progressive parents were already “there” living in an earth-friendly way.  I grew up in a conservation-minded household in California where water was more valuable than gold and all God’s creatures had a place in our homestead ecology.

So we mused about whether Earth Day has been effective and reaches out to people who don’t ordinarily think about things like renewable fuels, waste, wastewater, and solid waste disposal. We suspect that it does reach people at some level – it works as environmental education, in a way, especially for children in schools where teachers can package Earth Day with other earth science topics and get kids outside to experience Earth.  There are more kids nowadays that don’t get outside than ever before – that don’t experience the environment.  The “no child left inside” movement is evidence of this.

Perhaps, we thought, it’s a generational thing – and that now there’s a generation of people who grew up with it.  is it still relevant now?  do we need a wholly different concept to re-direct peoples’ attention to the complex of phenomena that cause climate change?  As the Chair of the newly formed AAA Task Force on Global Climate Change, I am constantly musing with friends and task force members about the phenomenon of climate change and all its human dimensions and impacts.  it is the next environmental and humanitarian crisis, it’s not limited to the U.S., and it’s happening now across the globe.   Earth Day came from a time in our social history when we had bipartisan support and social momentum for widespread environmental change within the U.S..  We are now at a different point in our social history with highly polarized views on climate change and the environment.  We need now a fundamentally different way of thinking about ourselves as part of the environment rather than the environment being “out there” where we can “fix” the problems with technology.  it is fundamentally more complex than the problems of the 1970s, which could be regulated in (for then) typical top-down, command and control regulatory policy. New ways of envisioning ourselves as part of the climate machinery are needed for the future.   I invite you to follow and comment on these blog postings surrounding this Earth Day.
