Robert Champion, a Florida A&M University student, died on November 19 in Orlando. It is believed that his death might have resulted from a hazing incident. FAMU, where I teach philosophy, has a history of unfortunate hazing incidents involving our famous band. While FAMU is currently in the spotlight, hazing is still all too common on American campuses-despite efforts to combat the practice.

The administration acted quickly by firing the band director, Julian White.  White is fighting his dismissal by contending that certain administrators showed “reckless indifference” when he attempted to seriously address the matter of hazing.  There is considerable evidence that White was, in fact, actively engaged in a dedicated attempt to eradicate hazing. Examples include his suspension of individuals for hazing and addressing the various problematic sub-groups within the band. Colleagues I have spoken with regarding White have spoken well of him and noted his efforts to combat hazing.

If Robert Champion was killed in a hazing incident, this clearly shows that things went terribly wrong. however, there is the question of who is at fault. obviously, the brunt of the moral responsibility would rest on those who (allegedly) killed him. as noted above, White was fired over this death, thus indicating that the people who made the decision are placing the blame on him.

As the band director, White clearly has considerable responsibility for what goes on in the band. however, this does not automatically entail that he is responsible for the death of Robert Champion. as noted above, White contends that his attempts to address hazing were hampered by administrators. if this is the case and White fulfilled his duties conscientiously, then the moral and legal blame would then shift upwards to those who would have failed in their duties.

While initiation rituals and legitimate admission trials can be acceptable practices (for example, I had to run faster than other team mates to secure a spot on the varsity cross country team in college), crossing the line past which people can be harmed (or even killed) is unacceptable. After all, harming a person is only just when doing so serves some legitimate moral purpose. Abusing someone as part of some tradition or to test their willingness to endure senseless degradation to belong to a group would not be acceptable. People should, as Kant argued, be treated as being of moral worth. Abusive hazing practices clearly violate the dignity of the person and hence should not be tolerated. Those practices that inflict actual harm are clearly wrong and, of course, are criminal actions.

As noted above, I do accept the legitimacy of  some initiation rituals as well as certain trials of admission. however, the rituals need to respect the dignity of the person and must not inflict abuse or harm. Being a competitive athlete, I am well aware that admission trials can be  legitimate. as I noted above, I had to earn a spot on the varsity cross country team by competing against my fellow runners. as another example, those who wish to be Navy Seals need to endure a brutal admissions process. however, these admission trials are legitimate. In the case of cross country teams, a person must earn the spot on the team and this is done by being a better runner. In the case of the Seals, a person must qualify by enduring what a Seal will encounter in his professional activities.

In the case of a band, it does make sense to have people compete for places via competitions in performance. however, the sort of physical abuse that has occurred in hazing incidents clearly has no relevance to being in the band. While a Seal might need to be tested to see how he would stand up to interrogation by the enemy,  a band member has no need to be tested to see how many whacks with a paddle s/he can endure. as such, such treatment is simply abuse and must not be tolerated.

My personal view of  abusive hazing is that it is a sign of both moral evil and a pathologically defective psychological makeup that would seem to include sadism as well as profound lack of respect for the dignity and worth of other people. Naturally, the people who engage in hazing speak of the tradition of the practice (which is, of course, fallacious reasoning) and note that people need to show their commitment. While I do believe in the importance of commitment, this is not something that should be tested by paddling a band member until he suffers kidney damage or abusing him until he dies.

Moonshine December Edition

Yesterday, all you want for Christmas was your two front teeth. not anymore, as Moonshine believes that all you need now is a little dose of their selected indie acts. If you are familiar with Ferns, Aiqa Halim, Narmi, Halfway Kings and Mia Palencia, you will notice the hush tunes and mellow-vibe they ought to offer. Pop is Ferns’ main gene. Sometimes, it is not either. much like an occasion, where She & him meets Gotye, you have the bluesy modern 1950s sound and harmony. while, breeze of innocence are bound to hit you, when you listen to Aiqa as her writing conveys the art of hearty literature. Of course, you know Narmi. He is more than just one Buck Shot’s drummer as he reveals his softer side, embracing folk with tinges of jazz in his music. also, in the Moonshine queue, is Halfway Kings. you can never go wrong with sultry vocals and sliding riffs, as they will remind you of Fiona Apple and lyrics that spell indie. Finally, picture a female John Legend. Mia Palencia has chosen to return from US to serenade us with husky yet, soulful vocals. Moonshine December Edition Date: 15th December 2011 (Thursday)Time: 9.30pm till 11.30pm Venue: Laundry Bar, the Curve Entrance Fee: None Website: www.facebook.com/events/310252332326459/?notif_t=event_invite

KLue – Moonshine December Edition

Oh man, I haven’t been this psyched for an EP in quite some time. Mithras was dead in my eyes, and I wasn’t happy about it. the extreme psychedelic death metal duo disbanded not long after the superlative release Behind the Shadows Lie Madness, but have since reformed following a shitstorm of lineup changes, label switches, and reconciliations. they released the “demos and rarities” album Sands of Time last year, which (like this) is a decent holdover until the full-length 2012 release. I appreciate Time Never Lasts more, because it not only includes a pair of new tracks, but also proves how well it reproduces live, as older tracks “Tomb of Kings” & “Wrath of God” (from 2002′s Forever Advancing… Legions) and “beyond the Eyes of Man” (from 2003′s Worlds beyond the Veil) display the first official live document of the original lineup, from what was their last live show—recorded in London, 2008. Fans of Mithras, and pretty much anyone that wants their Metal both immersive and esoteric, will find plenty to love here, even through just these five tracks. There are no clean, churchlike chants such as we last heard from the band; it’s all devastating David Vincent vocals from the mighty Rayner Coss (who also plays bass, not unlike Evil D). But what always hooks me deepest are those guitars by double-duty drummer Leon Masey. More ethereal than intricate—though both sides come into play—his performance perfectly compliments every song. especially “Into the Godmind” with its evolution of “the Small Hours” intro that leads to bleeding buzzsaws before ascending to the heavens around 1:13 …and then it changes again …and then it changes again. There isn’t another band, short of Gigan maybe, who dominate the cosmos like Mithras. 4/5

About one year ago, the deadly duo of Ryan Ogle and Scott Alisoglu started fucking hammering my inbox as their appropriately-titled promo company: Clawhammer PR. Like many of you, I’ve been reading their Blabbermouth reviews for a while now, and was psyched that they push bands from labels we here lost touch with (Listenable, Frontiers), introduced new labels to our network (Dark Descent, Ibex Moon), and nobly got behind self-released artists (Deadfall, Enormicon). Last band they sent my way that kinda made me lose my shit was FUCKING BONES, and now another band that’s in the same vein has caught my attention: Hammer Fight. the first thing I wrote back was So were you dudes like “copyright infringement unless we promote you” or something? because look at this fucking logo love connection:

Right‽ I don't just make this shit up. But Ryan says it was just a simple drunken agreement 4rlz

Anyway, so if you were in a hammer fight with these dudes and cracked their skull open, you’d see a load of Motörhead pouring out. In tempo and timbre, they’re a mighty close match, with a grimy modern production through fifteen blistering minutes of original tunes, plus a great updated cover of AC/DC‘s “if You Want Blood (You got It)”. And like both those bands, the focus is mostly on hard rockin’ fun, but Hammer Fight uses both sides of their weaponry, and dig in just as much as they bludgeon. Case in point: centerpiece “Tears of Unfathomable Sadness”. between memorable hooks, a badass chantable chorus, tasteful solos, and chunky low-end riffage, it’s a perfect showcase for their current apex. By far and away the longest track at 3:44, they otherwise keep it around two minutes or so, with brutal brevity. Hammer Fight plays like Mike Tyson fought circa 1988—both have every intention of knocking you out within three minutes. 4/5

Now those who have been reading since at least 2010 may remember our coverage of The Empire shall Fall and I was pretty stoked on Awaken (it even made my ‘best of’ list last year). often touted as an EP, I argue it’s a full-length at eight tracks and forty minutes; by contrast, Volume One: Solar Plexus is certainly worthy of the title at 25 minutes, though it’s only one track shorter than its predecessor. this is because half the dang songs are intros or transitions, and frankly, it’s annoying. We begin strong with “the Genesis of these Scars”, featuring more Meshuggah-channeling by way of A Life once Lost, only with much cleaner vocals. But they never approach the daring nature of even the first (and title) track of their debut, nor the lead single “Lords of War” which follows. And here’s the bug misstep: a tracked outro (“Dubrise”) followed by a tracked intro (“Narrow the Path I Walk – part I”). Hey, guess what I don’t fucking need ever, folks. seriously, it feels deceptive to think you’ll get seven unique tracks and receive only four; so combine or omit. the following “part II” demonstrates their improved balance, and they nail the haunting wails vs. guitar solo in the song’s third minute, heavily reminiscent of Alice in Chains. Then the social politics continue into “as the City Sleeps”, with frontman Jesse Leach making his finest impassioned plea. But “the Martyr’s Song” is pretty ‘whatever’, and though “the first Redemption” is adventurous, holding attention for its full eight minutes is daunting, especially during the final minute’s sorta-rapped/sorta-spoken-word vocals. however, Volume One: Solar Plexus is the first in a three-part trilogy that I believe will be better fleshed out in the future. 3.5/5

Lindsay Lohan (Toby Canham – Getty Images) Update: Hugh Hefner is making the best of Lohan’s leak, writing on Twitter that it’s “causing a sensation.”

“Because of the interest & the Internet leak, we’re releasing the Lindsay Lohan issue early,” the magazine mogul tweeted. No official word yet on what “early” means.

Original post

Lindsay Lohan’s entire Playboy pictorial has leaked online, a week before it was set to hit newsstands and get a TV reveal on “The Ellen DeGeneres show.”

The ten photo spread, clearly inspired by the 1949 shoot of Marilyn Monroe that appeared in the men’s magazine’s inaugural issue, hit the Web this afternoon. Some of the pictures are stamped with the watermark for WorldMags.net, which had scanned the issue and made it available for download. this file has since been taken offline. The issue’s cover leaked online Thursday.

The actress, who has suffered from a number of legal troubles in recent years, previously posed nude for another Monroe-inspired spread in New York Magazine

Request for comment from Playboy has not been returned. Sources told TMZ that magazine executives fear the leak could damage sales. Lohan was reportedly paid close to $1 million for the shoot.

The issue hits newsstands December 15.

The Kansas State Wildcats’ fresh off an overtime victory over the Texas A&M Aggies have started to make people take notice of their team, and especially their junior quarterback Collin Klein

ESPN’s Gene Wojciechowski recently compared Klein to former University of Florida Heisman trophy winner and current Denver Broncos starting quarterback, Tim Tebow. via espn.com

But he reminds me of Tebow a little bit — a right-handed version of TT who plays like he’s worried K-State coach bill Snyder is going to revoke his scholarship if he doesn’t gain the last possible inch on a run or leave a body part or two on the field.

Obviously Klein has not garnered the attention and accolades of a Tim Tebow to this point, but he is no less important to the K-State team than Tebow was to the Florida Gators when Tebow was winning national championships. only Klein isn’t surrounded by the same talent that Tebow was either. Wojciechowski went on to explain just how impressive Klein has been this year in comparison to some other more-nationally recognized names. via espn.com

He has more rushing yards (1,009) than Oklahoma State running back Joseph Randle, Clemson running back Andre Ellington or Georgia running back Isaiah Crowell. He has more rushing touchdowns than Wisconsin running back Montee Ball, Auburn running back Michael Dyer or Alabama running back Trent Richardson. in fact, he has more rushing TDs than Oregon’s LaMichael James and Virginia Tech’s David Wilson combined.

Klein and the no. 13 Kansas State Wildcats (8-2) take on the no. 23 Texas Longhorns (6-3) this Saturday at 6pm CT in Texas.
