When you think about the role of personal trainers, you can distinctly envision what their functions are, how they look, and the manner that they perform their jobs. their strong, perfect physique stands next to you at the fitness center and instructs you how to properly lift the weights. they run next to you on the track while cheering you on, and they count out loud the number of push-ups, crunches, and jumping jacks that you complete on the gym mat. they are available for a specific purpose – to help you gain physical strength, lose weight, learn to eat the proper foods, and maintain general good health. But, the key to the success and increased use of personal trainers is the fact that they are excellent motivators.

What if we all could hire our own personal trainers? We would always be healthy and fit. We would have strong beautiful bodies, and our mental state would consistently be directed, light-hearted, and happy. Being physically fit could impact all of the realms of our mind, body, and soul. Surely, if we feel great, physically, we are able to achieve great things. Our mind is full of the energy that our bodies have generated for it. and furthermore, our lives are sustained by all of the activities we are capable to take part in. We look super, and we feel wonderful, and this feeling is translated in our work and relationships.

Even if we cannot afford to employ a personal trainer or we don’t have the extra time to spare to train with one, there are other ways of bringing a similar type of motivation to our lives. We can bring inspirational desktop wallpapers into our personal and work arenas. These captivating photos and artwork exercise our minds and bring about such emotion and experiences. and, the moving quotations are like the personal trainers that shout out instructions and reassurances.

As professionals, we can maximize our productivity by introducing better, newer, hugely insightful, and effectual means of performing our jobs and duties. These free inspirational wallpapers are our personal trainer for stimulating work ideas. they motivate us in the same manner as an ordinary personal trainer in the gym. they push us to do more, to want better, and to alter our existing behavior. Having these downloadable personal trainers ensure that we can maintain a fit heart and mind along with healthy bodies.

To be physically fit, we must train rigorously and regularly. If we want to run a marathon, play an extraordinary round of golf, participate in the iron man race, or any other athletic event, continued practice and training is necessary. The same rule applies in our workplace. So, we must keep our minds and attitudes sharp, focused, and inspired. and, inspirational desktop wallpapers are the perfect trainers to accomplish that task.

Personal Training For the Mind, Heart, and Soul

Here’s a newsflash – unemployment remains a concern.

In Arkansas, the unemployment rate was 8.2 percent in November – that’s down from 9.3 percent, but is still high for Arkansas. What that number means is that 106,500 people in the Natural State want jobs but don’t have them. That’s a large number, roughly equal to the population of Saline County.

That’s a major problem for the economy for the economy for a number of reasons, but we’ll just deal with one since this column focuses on real estate issues – how can people who are unemployed make their mortgage payments? It’s clear that one of the things slowing down homes sales is the persistently high mortgage rate, but a more basic problem has to do with people who have homes and were meeting their obligations well enough until they lost their jobs.

Freddie Mac – the mortgage giant and government sponsored entity – has come up with its answer to that question. Starting on Feb. 1, Freddie Mac will make it possible for unemployed homeowners to apply for short-term and long-term forebearance programs.

The short-term program makes allowances for six months for people who are unemployed. If borrowers don’t have a job after six months, then a separate, extended forebearance program may be available.

Bear in mind the programs are available to all mortgage servicers dealing with mortgages backed by Freddie Mac. It’s hard to tell on a loan’s surface whether Freddie Mac backs it, but there’s a good chance your residential mortgage is covered by the entity.

To find out for sure if your mortgage is backed by Freddie Mac, go to FreddieMac.com, click the About Freddie Mac tab at the top of the page and then click on the FAQs (frequently asked questions) link. from there, you’ll be led to a page where you can type in your mortgage information and find out for yourself if Freddie Mac backs it or not.

If it is backed by Freddie Mac, then it’s time to get in touch with your mortgage servicer – the company to which you pay your loan – and see if you are eligible to participate in a forebearance program. The guidelines established by Freddie Mac are pretty well uniform and established a set of criteria which servicers are directed to follow.

Of course, the federal government and related entities have tried for a few years now to help home owners struggling to meet their payments. those programs have met with limited success. however, it is encouraging to see continuing attempts to bring meaningful help to Americans in need of it.

It can be difficult, however, to keep up with those programs as new ones are announced regularly and it seems we’re always hearing about people tinkering with programs in place. to step through that maze and see what programs are out there and which ones might help, it’s a good idea to put in a call to your local mortgage banker. they keep up with various policies floating around out there and are willing to steer borrowers toward the programs that could work best for them.

Home Sweet Home is written by Ethan C. Nobles and is sent weekly to publications throughout the Natural State on behalf of the Mortgage Bankers Association of Arkansas.

ALLISON KEYES, HOST:

I’m Allison Keyes and this is TELL ME MORE from NPR News. Michel Martin is away. Coming up we’ll visit the Beauty Shop where the ladies are talking about everything from politics to divorce but first today there’s some good news on the jobs front in America. New weekly unemployment claims dropped last week to their lowest level since April of 2008. Still, many families are anxious as debate continues in Washington over whether to extend jobless benefits for the long term unemployed.

If Congress doesn’t act nearly two million people will see their unemployment checks dry up by the end of January. We wanted to talk about the challenges of not having a job during the holiday season. So, we’re joined now by Marilyn Geewax, NPR’s business editor. Also back with us is Vincent Brandon who was laid off in March from his job as a bus driver. welcome and thanks for joining us.

MARILYN GEEWAX, BYLINE: hi Allison.

VINCENT BRANDON: thank you Allison.

KEYES: Vincent, I’ve got to ask, have you been following the debate in D.C. over the benefits and what do you think?

BRANDON: I have been following the debate. I’ve been following closely and just heard yesterday that the one of the proposals that was put on the table was turned down. So, I’m hoping that our Senators and our Congress are going to hang in there and continue to work and continue to, you know, iron this issue out.

KEYES: Are you angry or more disappointed in them?

BRANDON: I mean, I’m just really disappointed right now and, you know, you have the expectation that, you know, you work hard. I served in the military, you know, I served my country. I’ve been working hard. I’ve been a taxpayer for most of my adult life. I’ve been working since I was 12 years old so, I mean, I’ve been paying taxes and I expect my representatives to protect me essentially. Protect me from some of the downfalls that we’re experiencing right now.

KEYES: Marilyn, I’ve got to ask, if Congress doesn’t approve this extension, who is this going to hurt the most?

GEEWAX: well, to understand that first let me just explain a little bit about how the program works. Traditionally, states administer unemployment benefits and typically they would go for 26 weeks, about a half a year. well, in 2008 when it was apparent that the economy was really bad, Congress decided to give states extra money so, it could extend those benefits to 99 weeks in many cases and what we’re debating right now, Congress is looking at whether or not to continue to send that federal money to the states to extend those benefits.

So, the people who would be affected are those who have been unemployed for 26 weeks or more and have been getting these additional federal benefits. now, if that is not approved by December 31, people who are – have been unemployed more than six months will start to see their benefits fall away, and that will affect almost two million people right in January. So, there are folks right now who are getting about $300 a week in unemployment benefits – that’s the typical amount – and they won’t know if next month they’re going to be able to pay the rent because right now it’s very uncertain whether or not they’ll be able to get those benefits.

So, the people who will be affected first and most are those who have been unemployed the longest, and as this goes on though, states – it varies. Some states give you a little more than 26 weeks, it depends. but if this really doesn’t pass in Congress and it goes on all year, as many as five, six million people maybe affected.

KEYES: Wow, suddenly no money at all and you don’t know what’s going to happen. Vincent, you had a job this time last year. how is Christmas feeling different to you this year?

BRANDON: I mean, it’s definitely stressful. It’s, you know, you’re not able to do all those things for your family that you were able to do, you know, I was able to do when I had a job last year. but I’ve been blessed, I mean, in my last job I was a member of the union and actually my union brothers and sisters all kind of pitched in and made sure that the unemployed workers had Christmas for their children. So, they did a toy drive and, you know, that helped out and in addition to my church those things help out a lot. but, I mean, it’s still none the less stressful.

KEYES: You have a five-year-old daughter. I wondered how much she understands about what’s going on.

BRANDON: well, my daughter, you know, she really doesn’t understand. She’s not aware, you know, she keeps on saying Daddy’s a photographer now. She sees me working with my camera a lot and I am doing more jobs with my camera. So, she thinks that’s my job now.

KEYES: okay, Marilyn, you – we’ve talked before about the impact of unemployment on consumer confidence whether people are spending money. how does that play out during the holiday season?

GEEWAX: well Allison, we just got some new data this morning about that. the University of Michigan tracks consumer confidence and its gage shows that actually we’ve become a little bit more confident, primarily because gasoline prices have fallen. So, we’re back up to a six month high going into the holidays and that’s good for retailers. When people feel a little bit more confident, they spend a little more. but it’s fragile. We’re still well below where consumer confidence was back in say 2006, 2007 and the thing is we’ve got all of this uncertainty because of Congress.

Not only is there uncertainty about the unemployment benefits being extended but there’s also the issue of the payroll tax cut. Congress has been deciding whether or not to extend this pay roll tax cut into 2012 – the decision hasn’t been made yet – and as of December 31 that will expire. the existing tax holiday will go away. for the typical person, this amounts to about $20 a week in your take-home pay. So, if all of a sudden in January people are getting $20 a week less than they had and you lose those unemployment benefits that could all combine to have an impact on consumer confidence. So it’s certainly something to watch going into 2012.

KEYES: if you’re just joining us you’re listening to TELL ME MORE from NPR News. I’m Allison Keyes and we’re talking about unemployment during the holidays, the uncertainty around jobless benefits in Washington. I’m joined by Marilyn Geewax, NPR senior business editor, and Vincent Brandon, who’s been unemployed since March of this year. Vincent, this is kind of a tough question, but I wonder, besides your benefits, have you been looking for other jobs?

BRANDON: I certainly have. actually, I just attended a interview yesterday and I’m very hopeful. I’m looking for a nonprofit – work in a nonprofit field, specifically with youth advocacy. So, I’m hoping that something will come available. there are not many opportunities right now since it is the winter season. So, more opportunities are – come available during the summers for youth advocacy and youth counseling, things of that nature.

KEYES: I understand that some of the job openings these days have a caveat that says the unemployed need not apply. That’s got to be a little discouraging.

BRANDON: well, I mean, it is discouraging but, you know, I haven’t really necessarily experienced that or at least they’re not saying that to me directly.

KEYES: right.

BRANDON: What I am experiencing are opportunities that have salaries and benefits, you know, that don’t amount to gainful employment, you know…

KEYES: in another words not a wage that you can live on.

BRANDON: exactly, exactly. I mean, if you have children, if you have a home, if you have car payment and, you know, your other additional bills, I mean, you still have to pay those bills. You would hope that you could find a job that would at least meet your bills, you know, be able to pay your bills.

KEYES: Vincent, I know that you’re still getting benefits for about four more months or so, but I think you can’t reapply if the extension doesn’t pass. What are you going to do if that happens?

BRANDON: I quite frankly don’t know exactly what I’m going to do. I’m trying to come up with a game plan right now on exactly what I will do. Chances are I will have to make some arrangements maybe to move in with family members or I would prefer not to move out of Pittsburgh because my daughter is here and my daughter is, you know, comfortable in her school. So, but that is an option that I would have to look at, is to move back to Baltimore where my family support group is at.

KEYES: Marilyn, the fact that people who could possibly lose their unemployment benefits – what if the benefits don’t get extended into the middle of the holiday retail season? I mean, there are all those big shopping events after Christmas. Are people going to stay home and not spend?

GEEWAX: It’s true that the holiday shopping season really doesn’t end with December 25th. There’s an awful lot of shopping that goes on between the 25th and the end of January because people bring things back to the store. While they’re there, they shop when they’re doing their returns. So really, the retail season looks at the holiday shopping all the way into January, and that’s why it’s very interesting to be at this point where we don’t know what’s going to happen with both that payroll tax cut and the unemployment benefits. So both of those things are hanging over the retail world as they head into the back end of this holiday shopping season.

KEYES: if Congress doesn’t come to a deal, how badly will this hurt the economy in the long run?

GEEWAX: well, there are different estimates out there, but it’s pretty unanimous that economists think that, in the short term, at least, it will hurt the economy. One estimate I’ve seen is that it could reduce growth by as much as one and a half percent of growth, so that means instead of, say, a fairly healthy three percent growth, maybe you’re looking at one and a half percent growth in the first six months of 2012. So that’s really quite substantial.

That’s assuming both of these things, the payroll tax cut holiday doesn’t happen and the unemployment benefits aren’t extended. the idea here is that, really, that money that the unemployed get is a stimulus. It lets you go out and buy groceries. It lets you buy clothes for your kids, whatever, and if you don’t have that government check, until you can find a paycheck, you’re in trouble, and that will hurt a lot of retailers.

KEYES: Vincent, I wonder, if you could speak directly to some of our lawmakers, what would you say to them?

VINCENT BRANDON: I would just definitely say just think of Americans as if they were your family members. You know, if I was your family member, would you continue to drag your feet? would you continue to hesitate in ironing out a deal that would, you know, that would benefit your family members? You know, we are mothers, fathers, we’re sisters, we’re brothers, we’re cousins. We are related to you in every way, so why not think about us in that way, as if we were your family? would you allow your family to continue to be neglected in this way?

You know, and that’s the way that many of the workers, the unemployed workers in my area that I have talked to during various rallies and various press conferences, you know, they’re all saying the same thing. They’re really feeling neglected by their elected officials.

KEYES: got to thank you both for your thoughts. Marilyn Geewax is NPR’s senior business editor. She was with us here in our Washington, D.C. studio. and Vincent Brandon was laid off from his job as a bus driver in March. He was kind enough to join us from member station WQED in Pittsburgh.

Thank you both, and Vincent, good luck.

BRANDON: thank you, Allison.

GEEWAX: You’re welcome.

Holidays And Political Gridlock Strain Unemployed

Again—Clinton signed it—he WAS the President that signed it.  “Ceremonially” signing something doesn’t make it law. Did GHWB push it, arrange it, whatever? sure, but it doesn’t take any responsibility off of Clinton/Gore.  just like the repeal of Glass-Steagall…a GOP idea, but Clinton signed it. in fact, while signing the NAFTA bill, he stated: “…NAFTA means jobs. American jobs, and good-paying American jobs. if I didn’t believe that, I wouldn’t support this agreement.”  And of course, he was WRONG.

ILLINOIS BUDGET-CLOSURES: Gov. Pat Quinn and legislative leaders agreed Monday to cancel plans for closing state facilities and cutting nearly 2,000 jobs by taking money from elsewhere in the state budget, including about $100 million that was originally earmarked for education. if the agreement is approved by lawmakers, it would save a prison, a center for juvenile offenders and centers for the mentally ill and developmentally disabled, along with the jobs of the people working there. Quinn's budget director, David Vaught, stressed that the plan will not increase overall state spending. instead, it moves money around within the budget. “By pushing spending down over here, we're able to use that money over there for different purposes,” Vaught told the Associated Press.

RIVER ROUNDTABLE: River experts and farm organization leaders hope the widespread flooding this year will prompt Congress to improve flood protection and fund lock improvements along major rivers.

HOLIDAY RETAIL: More Americans hunted for bargains over the weekend than ever before as retailers lured them online and into stores with big discounts and an earlier-than-usual start to the holiday shopping season. Crowds were up at the Quincy Mall and in some local retail spots during the first few days of the holiday shopping season.

EUROPE-FINANCIAL CRISIS: Eurozone finance ministers make a desperate bid to save the 17-nation euro currency — and protect Europe, the United States, Asia and the rest of the global economy from a debt-induced financial tsunami. at the top of Tuesday's agenda is finding a means to integrate the eurozone's disparate nations — ranging from powerful Germany to tiny Malta — much more fully, both politically and financially. and the ministers must do it fast, without the delays caused by democratic niceties like time-consuming referendums.

SKIPPING SCHOOL SHOTS: a rising number of parents in more than half of states are opting out of school shots for their kids. and in eight states, more than 1 in 20 public school kindergarteners aren't getting all the vaccines required for attendance, an Associated Press analysis found. that has health officials worried about outbreaks of diseases that were all but stamped out.

CAIN: once again, Herman Cain is on the defensive over accusations of sexual impropriety. the Republican candidate heads to Michigan Tuesday where he'll likely face questions after Ginger White publicly accused Cain of carrying on a 13-year extramarital affair with her. that allegation — which Cain denied — comes after it was revealed that the National Restaurant Association paid settlements to two women who said they were sexually harassed by Cain. Then a third woman, Sharon Bialek, accused Cain of groping her in 1997.

AFGHAN-TROOPS LEAVING: Drawdown plans announced by the U.S. and more than a dozen other nations will shrink the foreign military footprint in Afghanistan by 40,000 troops at the close of next year, leaving Afghan forces increasingly on the frontlines of the decade-long war. But the exit is making Afghans nervous and many fear their nation could plunge into civil war once the foreign forces go home.

OBESE THIRD-GRADER: the case of an 8-year-old third-grader weighing more than 200 pounds renews a debate on whether parents should lose custody if a child is severely obese.

PETS-VET CARE POLL: eight in 10 pet owners have taken their animals to the vet in the past year, with an overall average expenditure of $505, according to a new AP-Petside.com poll. sixty percent of those who took their pets to the vet spent $300 or less, but the average expenditure was boosted higher by the one in eight pet owners (13 percent) who spent $1,000 or more.

CITY COUNCIL: the Quincy City Council approved a truth in taxation resolution Monday night as the city prepares to set its tax levy in December. Aldermen required to approve such a resolution annually. if the city were to raise the operating levy by more than 5 percent, a public hearing and publication of a “truth in taxation” notice would have been required. Gary Sparks, director of administrative services for the city, said details on the levy were still being worked out, but the ordinance would be included in aldermen packets sent out later in the week to be introduced at next week's council meeting.

KEEP WREATHS RED: Quincy doesn't typically have many fires related to holiday decorations, but the Quincy Fire Department wants to remind residents to be careful during the holidays. “We do have some incidents every year — smaller type things, especially with candles,” Chief Joe Henning said. “The reality is: Whether it's a problem or not, it's a huge potential. it seems like more and more every year people are decorating, getting more elaborate with their decorations and their schemes.” the Quincy Fire Department is participating in the “Keep the Wreath Red” campaign this year to raise awareness for fire prevention.

FUTUREGEN-AMEREN: a coalition pushing to build a clean-coal project in Illinois backed by $1 billion in federal stimulus money said Monday it will press ahead with the long-delayed FutureGen effort despite the planned scaled-back role of a key developer. the FutureGen Alliance announced that St. Louis-based Ameren Corp. has notified it that it will not continue its cooperative agreement for FutureGen 2.0 past the end of this year, making it the latest stutter in the ambitious effort first imagined roughly a decade ago and for a time scrapped altogether. the coalition said it is negotiating a plan to buy a portion of a power plant Ameren intends to shutter soon near Meredosia in west-central Illinois, close to where carbon dioxide — a greenhouse gas experts blame for climate change — from the plant eventually would be stashed underground.

TAX BREAKS: a $250 million package of tax breaks for Illinois businesses stumbled out of a House committee Monday despite reservations among legislators and an accusation that two major companies are “holding a gun” to the head of state government. the measure is meant to keep the financial exchange company CME Group Inc. and Sears Holdings Corp. from moving their operations to other states. it would offer specific tax breaks to them while providing several other general tax breaks that could help businesses across Illinois. Families would get some relief, too — an increase in the standard income tax exemption and a bump in the earned-income tax credit for the poor.

BLAGOJEVICH TRIAL-SENTENCING: the federal judge who will sentence Rod Blagojevich had harsh words for the former Illinois governor's attorneys as he denied a request Monday to play new federal wiretap tapes in court. Blagojevich was convicted at two separate trials on 18 corruption counts, including allegations he tried to sell or trade President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat. Blagojevich will be sentenced next week, and his lawyers last week submitted a list of 180 secret tape recordings the FBI made of the governor and others. parts of some recordings were played during his trials, but Blagojevich has long argued that authorities should “play all the tapes.” he says some of the recordings hold evidence demonstrating his innocence. But Judge James Zagel said Blagojevich's attorneys hadn't said what they specifically wanted to prove and what sections of the tapes they wanted to use, echoing complaints made by federal prosecutor

JOPLIN TORNADO: Insurance companies have paid out $1.13 billion in claims from the Joplin tornado, and that's expected to climb to as much as $1.9 billion, the state's insurance department director said. an estimated 7,500 homes were destroyed in the May 22 storm that wiped out about one-third of the community and killed 161 people. John Huff, director of the Missouri Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions and Professional Registration, praised insurers for their timely payouts, which he called essential to the city's rebuilding.

Get a plan: creating Successful Economic Strategies

The final G of the Three G’s method has to do with taking action and implementing economic strategies. Successful strategies to get ahead include re-evaluating and re-educating; seeking out available programs and services; setting up an achievable goal; and uniting to fight against structural oppression.

Reassess, Re-Evaluate and Re-Educate

Once migrants have recovered from misconceptions about life in Diaspora, they can begin to reassess their future. upon arrival in the destination country, most migrants will usually have to re-evaluate their skills and consider re-training or re-educating. Studies have shown that one of the factors that help most in the initial post-migration period is to have a high level of skills. Furthermore, according to studies in the UK and South Africa, 30 per cent of migrants go on to obtain a new qualification in the host country. these trends suggest that upon arrival in the destination country, migrants need to be prepared to re-train, re-educate or change occupations.

In order to avoid dead-end ghetto-ized jobs and succeed beyond subsistence living, migrants will need to analyze the job market and attempt to supply a demand in the host country. they will also need to learn to exploit opportunities. this will require migrants to obtain some business knowledge in order to study the economy, find and fill a niche, or become an entrepreneur. Those who lack the entrepreneurial spirit and have no desire to strike out on their own should at least be willing to retrain or change occupations.

Research what help is Available

In most Western democratic countries, free programs and services exist to help refugees and immigrants in need. these include programs and services that provide assistance with employment, education, housing, health, legal counsel family relocation and recovery from trauma. But because these programs are costly to run and limited in funding, most governments are not quick to advertise the fact that assistance is on offer. consequently, it is left to the migrant to search and uncover what help is available. Migrants (even those who are undocumented) should never assume that help in unavailable. even in some of the most un-inviting locations within the Diaspora, services exist to provide help to those in need. Existing help may be meager, but it can make a huge difference to those in dire straits.

More often than not, scholarships exist to help fund education, programs are available to provide benefits to unemployed workers and free counseling is offered to migrants with mental health issues. yet migrants may be unaware that these programs exist in the host country, even after residing there for some time, and complicated government bureaucracies can make assistance appear unreachable. for example, undocumented seasonal migrant workers in South Africa are eligible for unemployment benefits during the off-season-the taxes are automatically deducted from their wages. But most migrants are unaware that they are eligible for these benefits. Most have been lead to believe that only South African natives are eligible, when in reality, undocumented migrants can claim these benefits needing nothing more than a proof of work contract.

Therefore, upon arrival in the destination country, migrants need to put careful effort into researching what programs are available. When the migrant has exhausted all possibilities of government services, they can then turn to seeking out non-government and non-for-profit sources. Good locations to place inquiries are:

Employment centers
Humanitarian organizations
Mental health service centers
Women’s shelters
Education campuses
Churches and other religious institutions

Many of these places have programs, services and information specifically for immigrants or can at least act as referral centers to point toward agencies that can provide further assistance.

Set an Achievable Goal and a Create a Realistic plan to Get There

As discussed earlier, migrants can benefit from re-defining their vision of success to one that is based on a more achievable goal. Then they are in a position to begin setting up a plan to achieve that goal. When creating an economic plan, it is useful to establish it according to a timeline, and to break the task up into smaller steps. this way, the goal seems less daunting and becomes easier to achieve, one small step at a time. according to a Buddhist saying, There is no large and difficult task that cannot be divided into small, easy tasks.

For example, if a migrant is unhappy with the job they currently hold, they could set a goal to re-train and find more fulfilling work within two years (or however long they choose). the first step in the plan would be to choose a new vocation, which would require some research at a local education institution to seek out new career and business trends. the second step could be to investigate scholarships, bursaries or grants to help pay for tuition and assist with living expenses while studying. the third step on the list might be to begin application procedures and so forth. as one proceeds through all the steps on the list, more steps may become apparent along the way that were overlooked; these steps can be included in the list as needed.

It may also be helpful to set aside a quiet time each day to refocus on one’s goals. for example, every evening, it is helpful to review what parts of the plan were achieved that day, and what steps of the plan need to be taken on the following day. in order to succeed in Diaspora, migrants will find that they need to be highly organized, responsible, hard working, focused, dedicated, courageous and able to put off immediate gratification for long-term reward. the immigrant life is arduous and ambitious; setting up small achievable goals and forming them into a plan that can be followed step-by-step, can help migrants stay on track in their quest for success.

As the previous articles pointed out, some of the biggest obstacles migrants are dealing with are due to structural economic forces, including structural unemployment, downward social mobility and institutionalized racism. these forces cannot be eradicated without being challenged by migrants as a group. the process is slow, difficult and not without risk to the individuals involved. yet in recent years positive change has been brought forth to the Diaspora thanks to the concerted efforts of migrants. in the UK, for example, Zimbabweans are uniting to fight for their rights. Groups such as Strangers into Citizens are holding rallies in an attempt to bring political attention to the plight of undocumented migrants and to change immigration laws pertaining to asylum seekers.

In South Africa, undocumented migrants are also beginning to unite and fight; they are taking action to protect themselves in exciting, new ways. Workers are coming together and forming migrant unions, such as the Zimbabwe Hotel and Catering Workers Union (ZHCWU), established in 2007 by undocumented Zimbabwean migrant and mother of 2, Lilian Sibanda. Speaking to a journalist at zimbabweanjournalists.com, Sibanda states: we have formed this union to open negotiations with existing labour unions to investigate and address evils that are unfolding to Zimbabweans who constitute about 85% of workers in this industry. Sibanda formed the union not only to protect migrants, but to also create sustainable opportunities for them–the union has obtained a license to open restaurants and cafs in Doornfontein, Maraisburg and Florida. Sibanda says, from here I believe our story should be one of success after success, from humble beginnings and poorly paid waiters to owners of legally registered restaurants.

From abused, underpaid kitchen staff who constantly lived in fear of deportation, to licensed business owners-Sibanda and her colleagues have helped to transform a seemingly impossible situation for undocumented migrants.

Another positive change that has occurred recently in South Africa is the development of an agriculture database that registers and links migrant farm workers with legitimate employers. this project aims to protect undocumented migrant workers from employment abuse and ensures that they will be paid a fair wage. the project began in Limpopo and is planned to spread throughout the rest of the country.

As the above examples demonstrate, structural change can happen. However, in most cases, it is not the State that will create change for the oppressed, it is the oppressed themselves that produce transformation. Structural problems within the Diaspora are not going to disappear without migrants actively challenging those problems. Migrants need to join organizations that support human rights and decry xenophobia and structural racism. if those groups do not exist within their communities, then migrants need to organize and create them so that they can take an active role in educating others.

When experiencing institutionalized racism or individual cases of racist abuse, migrants need to know that they have the option of fighting back-of filing a legal complaint. Most democratic countries have laws set up to protect civil rights and these laws are taken seriously. When experiencing racism, a migrant may feel tempted to simply put up with the abuse or terminate the job and quietly leave rather than to stand up and challenge the mistreatment. yet for every migrant who fails to take action against a racist workplace, another migrant must pay for the inaction, by having to take over the vacated job and the abuse that comes with it. therefore, those that suffer the most from discrimination hold the greatest key to breaking the cycle of oppression.

Although it can be risky to challenge discrimination, and the consequences can be sobering should one fail, it is also sobering to realize that if the challenge is not taken, then the cycle of oppression could well be passed on to the next generation of migrants. the sons, daughters and grandchildren of today’s immigrants could one day end up in the same position, struggling to survive in a hostile Diaspora. therefore, the actions migrants take today will determine the future of the diasporas who follow in their footsteps. it is important to help prepare the way for future generations by seizing every opportunity to make positive change today.

To conclude, the 3 Gs method has presented some options that migrants can explore in order to survive in their host country. Practicing some of the suggestions here can help immigrants deal with some of the more pressing dilemmas regarding life in Diaspora. However, life is about more than just survival. how can migrants go from merely surviving, to a life that is thriving? this answer will be explored next. as we have seen, migrants in Diaspora face many socio-economic forces that are beyond their individual control. yet there is always something individuals can control, despite the circumstances they find themselves in: their attitude.

Positive Coping Strategies For Life in Diaspora: Get A Plan

Letter: The key word is ‘work’

fischerpk1 writes:

Every day now, as was true in the past, less qualified white men are hired over more qualified white men, less qualified white women chosen over more qualified white women or men, etc. Look at today’s workforce. What ethnic group dominates the workforce? In every industry, incompetent white men and women hold high level jobs. Minority men and women still hold a minority of those high level jobs. Your comments ring hollow in light of the current reality. Calling folks names reveals what a small mind you have. the fact that your letter was even chosen to be published indicates the biased agenda the editor implicitly is pushing — make wild, hackneyed, unsupported charges which feed the bigots who hate the fact of a highly educated, articulate black man as the President of the USA and you’re very likely going to get it published!

Obama is only half black, guess what his other half is?

Articulate? only with a teleprompter!

Educated? We don’t know, we haven’t seen his college transcripts.

Now for some of my favorite Obamaism gaffes….H/T Human Events!

“I’ve now been in 57 states—I think one left to go.”

”In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died—an entire town destroyed.” He was only off by 9,988 as the twister killed 12 people.

“No, no. I have been practicing. … I bowled a 129. It’s like—it was like Special Olympics, or something.”

During the health care debate, President Obama explained all the benefits of ObamaCare, saying, “The reforms we seek would bring greater competition, choice, savings and inefficiencies to our health care system.”

President Obama signed the guest book and dated it 24 may 2008. Oops. it was 2011.

Letter being published showing bias by the CA? not hardly, look at their consistent track record of who they endorse. if I recall, they are over 90% Democrat during election season.

Life is about competition. We work our way to meet our goals. It is not an easy ride but it is something that we must do in order to progress. Everyday we go to school to be competitive in our future jobs. In our everyday jobs, we work our way to get a promotion and a salary raise. However, we do not do it alone. there will always be people who will take part in keeping us on track with our everyday challenges just to reach the end goal. sometimes, those people are whom we call our guardians, our parents, our counselors or even our life coach.

In sports, whether team or individual, there will always be one person or more to watch out for the team. of course, they do not act as a police patrol to keep reprimanding the team what not to do. However, they are there to discipline, train and keep the team on track with their goal to win the championship match in every league they join. one of the sports that have many coaches is football. a team full of big and tough men needs more than one person to handle them. However, there will be only one coach that manages the team overall and they are the head coaches.

Let us now look at the coaches of the LSU Tigers football team, who helped them win national championships.

1. Paul Dietzel- He led the team to win National Championships way back 1958. Coaching for this time was one of the best years he had. American Football Coaches Association and Football Writers Association of America named him National Coach of the Year at the time they won the National Championships. He loved the team so much and led them to become the number one in the country. He quoted, I never considered going anywhere else because I thought LSU was the best coaching job in America

2. Nick Saban- He was the head coach of the team from 2000-2004. He made history when he led the team to win their second National Championships in 2003.

3. Les Miles- He is the current head coach of the team. He has been helping the team to perform at their best whether it is nationals or just SEC championships. one of his greatest achievements was to lead the team to win the BCS National Title Game last year. It is one of the most important events in the history of LSU Tigers as he made this team the only team to win two BCS national championship titles.

In the field of sports, coaches play a vital role in winning. They can see through the strengths and weaknesses of every player and use that to create a successful play. You can love the most valuable player in the team but in the hearts of the players, they know they were not alone in winning. great football coaches serve different teams across America and it happened that LSU was blessed enough to make great college football history with their coaches.
