Back in the 1960s, The Monkees exploited the so-called generation gap. The death of Davy Jones has exposed that age split all over again more than four decades later.

"when I was a kid I wanted to BE Davy Jones," tweeted actor Kevin Bacon, 53, after news broke Wednesday of Jones' death from a heart attack at age 66. "Big part of what led me to showbiz."

Bacon wasn't the only one left mourning. "Today" weather guy Al Roker, who is 57, tweeted that with the passing of Jones, "a little bit of my youth just died."

But not everyone was so moved. People far too young to remember the cultural tumult of the 1960s were often left scratching their heads, just as they were when Paul McCartney performed at the Grammys this month.

Many younger wits indulged in inevitable maritime jokes. for instance, @annagracecook tweeted: "Davy Jones? who is that? the guy with the locker on spongebob?"

@ahluckygirl wrote: "Mom is seriously like so sad over him. R.I.P. Davy Jones."

Perhaps @loudmadman summed it up best, by noting that Jones' death came just one day before current teen idol Justin Bieber turns 18. "This cannot be just a mere coincidence."

What do you think? was Jones one for the ages, or a strictly a boomer icon?

Earlier this month I had the privilege of attending the Grammy awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. As always it was an exciting and entertaining event (this was my 4th time attending live). As I watched the show, I was again reminded of the importance of personal branding to the entertainment world. Here are five personal branding lessons I took away from the 2011 Grammy awards:

1) Social media is more important than ever. Whether or not you’re a fan of Justin Bieber, the story of his rise to fame is an excellent example of the power of social media. Bieber’s chances of success certainly seemed bleak early in his childhood, as he was raised in low-income housing in Ontario, Canada. Hardly an ideal situation to launch a career in the entertainment world. it was through YouTube that he was first discovered by talent scouts, and his rise to fame began. twenty years ago, the Justin Bieber story could never have happened.

2) Whatever you stand for, don’t be bland. Lady Gaga showed up in an egg. Yes, an egg. now, I can’t in good faith recommend that you show up at the office that way, but the point still stands: it’s better to stand for something, even if it’s outrageous, than to stand for nothing. what unique talents, opinions, or attributes do you have that can make you stand out?

3) It’s never too late. A couple of weeks before the Grammys, Christina Aguilera was nationally ridiculed for tripping over the lyrics of the national anthem before the Super Bowl. at the time, some experts predicted that the mistake would kill her career. Instead, Aguilera performed a stellar rendition of Aretha Franklin’s Ain’t No way that quickly made everyone forget about her Super Bowl disaster. the lesson? when you get knocked down, get back up. Branding is an ongoing process; it’s never too late to fix a previous mistake.

4) Always be prepared. the most common reaction to Esperanza Spalding’s upset of Justin Bieber to win the Grammy for best New Artist was Who the heck is Esperanza Spalding?? Barely anyone, probably not even Ms. Spalding herself, gave her a chance to win. But she did, and was rapidly thrust into the spotlight. Will she seize the opportunity to establish herself as a household name? that remains to be seen, but the point is this: you never know when opportunity may arise. be ready to make the most out of every branding opportunity that comes your way.

5) you can be a celebrity. Possibly the strangest revelation that comes with meeting celebrities face to face is the realization that they are regular people too. Lady Gaga may have a great persona, but how many thousands of similarly, or ever more talented women never make it in the business? Usher is certainly a talented performer, but there are plenty of non-celebrities that could give him a run for his money. Celebrities aren’t more talented than everyone else. But they do make a concerted effort to brand themselves in a way that makes them stand out from the crowd. you may not be the very best accountant, the most creative graphic artist, or the brightest lawyer in the world, but that doesn’t mean you can’t establish yourself as a celebrity in your world

Add another big pop collaboration to Rascal Flatts‘ list: They’ve followed up their teaming with teen-pop juggernaut Justin Bieber by joining the cast of decidedly-not-teen-pop star Michael Bolton‘s new Gems — the Duets Collection.

The country trio contributes album opener “Love Is everything,” and they join a list of Duets cohorts that also includes pop singer Seal, jazz trumpeter Chris Botti and rising guitar hero (and former Carrie Underwood string-slinger) Orianthi, among others.

“We heard that Michael wanted to write something with us. We all kept telling ourselves, ‘It’s like, Michael Bolton! come on — he’s one of the greatest singers on the planet,’” the Flatts guys said in a statement. “He wanted to get the whole band involved and make this thing really fresh and new. it was just so cool that we had a chance to get together and write this killer song.’”

Gems — Bolton’s 21st studio album — is due in stores on June 21, 2011. Read a full tracklisting after the jump.

For those of you who look at Twitter users such as Justin Bieber and Ashton Kutcher you will be pleased to know that you would have all had the same amount as followers as them – Zero. The reason for this was due to the micro-blogging site being hacked this morning.

Twitter did not wait long to resolve the issue and fixed the problem this morning. The hack allowed Twitter users to force others to follow them, as a result the website forced all users followers to zero – this would have certainly come as a surprise to the big hitters like those mentioned above.

Thankfully the followers have now been restored – but Bieber has decided to send a little message to those who caused the hack in the first place. He basically said that they have angered two million teenage girls – something that nobody wants to do.

According to PC Mag who originally learned of the news via AppScout, Twitter said that no information was leaked during the hack? Were you worried about the hack, had you thought that you lost all of your followers?

Something better than “The Bieber”?
The New York Times (via Us) recently reported that high school boys in Manhattan are paying $150 for a haircut like Justin Bieber’s. (To which we can only respond, you mean that look actually requires scissors?) but Bieber may be thinking of a different coiff, based on what he’s saying…what will the world do if Justin Bieber gets a new ‘do?!

They may find themselves with enough hair to donate to worthwhile organizations for people who can use real hair — that’s how much hair is happening on boys around the world who are influence by Justin Bieber’s shaggy look.

However, Bieber has just revealed that he sometimes thinks of changing his style: “In the future, I may get bored and change it up,” Bieber says…but before all the boys go running for their clippers, read the rest. Bieber added, “I’m kinda liking the long hair right now … for now I like how it is.”

Forgive me if I’m just not getting the Bieber. It’s not a good look on most young guys, and I recently saw a picture of a boy that I thought was from 1974 — but it was shot last month. meanwhile, the famous Manhattan barber Cozy Friedman says a lot of boys come in telling him they want the long and messy look, but they’re embarrassed to actually refer to it as “The Bieber.”

Call it what it is, kids — and don’t take it personally if Justin Bieber leaves us all in the dust with his next move. why, it sounds like Biebs may see his first strip club soon…plus there was that whole Kim Kardashian thing that led to Kimmy K. receiving death threats! What’s the only thing scarier than teenage boys who want “The Bieber”? Teenage girls who love the Bieber!
