President Obama last night gave a speech regarding the United States position in Iraq, in which he hailed his predecessor George W. Bush as a fellow patriot. The speech came about as US troops begin to evacuate some of the country’s most hostile areas.

The President said that, ‘he and I disagreed about the war from its outset, yet no one could doubt President Bush’s support for our troops, or his love of country and commitment to our security.’ He went on to say, ‘as I have said, there were patriots who supported this war, and patriots who opposed it, he said. And all of us are united in appreciation for our servicemen and women, and our hopes for Iraqis’ future.’

Mr Obama however avoided referring to the war as a positive decision. He said that the world media criticized mr Bush harshly for his decision to go to war with Iraq in 2002, and that claims that he is incompetent and ‘dumb’ are childish allegations that hold little merit. He said that the same Oval Desk that George Bush announced to the people of America that their country will be going to war with Iraq was the same one he was now delivering his speech.

He went on to say, ‘much has changed since that night, a war to disarm a state became a fight against an insurgency. Terrorism and sectarian warfare threatened to tear Iraq apart. Thousands of Americans gave their lives; tens of thousands have been wounded. Our relations abroad were strained. Our unity at home was tested.’

Before President Obama delivered his speech he called upon mr Bush to finalise the end of combat operations in Iraq, however what the two men discussed remains highly confidential.

President Obama Speech To Mark The End Of War

An old coworker coerced me into watching the last season of ABC’s “The Bachelor,” and while I found it hard to watch in the beginning, after the first few episodes it became sort of a guilty pleasure because I had to see what was going to happen in the end. what turned me off most about the show, despite tuning in every week, was the was the fact that contestants would have full-blown breakdowns over not being handed a rose after knowing some random guy for a day or two and the idea that a woman would actually agree to marrying a stranger after a few months. I couldn’t turn away from the cries and the embarrassing confessionals, but to me, the overall concept was silly.

A pastor at St. Sabina Catholic Church in Chicago is taking “silly” one step further. he says the show is degrading to women in the way that we criticize the representations of Black women in the “Basketball Wives,” “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” and “Love and Hip Hop” series. Rev. Michael Pfleger told the Chicago Sun Times:

“This whole concept, I mean, how sick is this that 25 women are throwing their bodies and their hearts at this one man, who is having all these little romantic runs with the different women here and there, and the women are doing whatever they gotta do to try and get him. how degrading is this for women?

“I mean these women were crying their eyes out when they weren’t accepted, and one even fell out on the floor, and I’m just amazed that this show is allowed to go on,” he said. “What is this teaching our young girls about what it takes to gain the acceptance of a man, and doing whatever you gotta do to sell yourself?”

Reverend Pfleger definitely has a point. While we complain about black and latino women throwing drinks and punches, he’s concerned with white women throwing themselves at men. he even said he’s shocked the National Organization for Women and other associations haven’t spoken out about “The Bachelor,” and to my knowledge he’s one of the first people to say anything about the portrayals of white women on reality TV (that’s the only shade 99% of the show’s contestants come in). Granted, I’m surprised he takes more issue with this show than some of the Real Housewives series, but the reverend does have a point about the desperation these women exude and what they’re modeling for young girls.

The south side pastor even went so far as to say the portrayals of women on the show are equal to video vixens in rap music videos.

“To me, this is just as negative,” he said. “And if we’re going to condemn negative rappers, particularly African-American rappers, calling women names and degrading them, which is wrong, then let’s equally do it with shows like ‘The Bachelor.’ The whole principle of this show is wrong.

“The women cry, fight, and plot against each other, acting as if they are a piece of meat being dangled from a hook for the bachelor’s selection,” Rev. Pfleger said. “In one episode, the bachelorettes climbed the San Francisco [Bay] Bridge and even went skiing in bikinis. they fell and purposely bent over just so the bachelor could see their most private parts. The whole thing should just make us all sick.”

I really applaud the pastor for calling out society on its double standard. I can’t even count the number of articles that have been written condemning the representations of black women on reality TV while everyone else gets a pass. “White women do it too” should never be an excuse to continue with stereotypical portrayals on TV, but with so many people—white and black—being quick to call out rappers for how they degrade women, maybe the “The Bachelor,” in its 16th season should be criticized just as harshly too. The only serious critique I’ve seen of the show is related to the lack of diversity in its casting, and it would definitely be interesting to see how the show was received if there were women of color behaving the same way the current contestants do.

I’d never given much thought to the portrayals of women when I watched the show, probably because I didn’t see myself in the contestants so I felt much more separate than I do watching Bravo or VH1. But I think Rev. Pfledger is making a much larger point about society overall: if you’re going to call out one industry for the way it represents women, you have to call them all out.

What do you think about the pastor’s view? Do you watch “The Bachelor?” Do you think it’s as degrading to women as some rap lyrics and videos?

Van Halen II is the latest release from Van Halen, and I can only think of one word to describe this CD. AWESOME

It’s a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I’m more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with each song standing tall on it’s own.

Van Halen II has a nicely varied, mix of 10 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly superb musicians. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

I’m of the opinion that Van Halen II is certainly some of this groups best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because it’s a collection that even the casual Rock fan can appreciate and enjoy.

While the entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 2 – Dance the Night away, track 3 – somebody get me A Doctor, and track 10 – Beautiful Girls

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [.as in Stuck on REpeat] is track 1 – You’re No good. It’s a great track

DETROIT (AP) – the Detroit Pistons finalized what has been a formality, cutting ties with three-time All-Star Richard Hamilton.

Detroit made the move Monday after both sides agreed to terms of a buyout.

Hamilton was due to make $19 million guaranteed over the final two years of his contract in Detroit. he was bought out for $11 million, saving the rebuilding team $4 million in cap space this year and $4 million more next season.

Hamilton has posted messages on his Twitter account about cleaning out his locker and parting ways with the Pistons.

“Thank u to all my Detroit fans,” a message reads on Hamilton’s Twitter account. “Love all of u. U will always have a special place in my heart. Yessssssirrrrr.”

The Pistons planned to retool with Hamilton when they traded his backcourt mate Chauncey Billups to Denver 2008, but the shooting guard and the team has been reeling ever since that transaction was made.

Hamilton has averaged 17.7 points in a career that started in 1999 with Washington Wizards and flourished in Detroit.

“We thank Richard Hamilton for his time here with the Pistons organization,” Detroit president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said in a statement released by the team. “Rip was a champion with us and a big part of our success over the last nine years. We wish him all the best in the future.”

The native of Coatesville, Pa., is expected to land with the Chicago Bulls. Hamilton would have to clear waivers and pass a physical, but the Bulls appear to be a fit for him and his game.

Clippers claim Billups, re-sign Jordan

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — the Los Angeles Clippers claimed five-time All-Star Chauncey Billups off waivers. the 35-year-old point guard was waived by the New York Knicks last weekend.

Billups averaged 16.8 points, 5.4 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 72 games with Denver and the Knicks last season. he was traded to new York in February. he helped lead Detroit to the 2004 championship and was the MVP of the NBA Finals.

Later Monday, the Clippers matched Golden State‘s four-year, $42.7 million offer for center DeAndre Jordan.

Golden State signed Jordan to the offer sheet Sunday. as a restricted free agent, the Clippers had three days to decide whether to match the contract.

The 6-foot-11 Jordan has emerged as an athletic and promising young center in three years in Los Angeles. he averaged 7.1 points and 7.2 rebounds in 25 minutes per game last season.

The Warriors also unsuccessfully pursued former Dallas center Tyson Chandler, watching him go to the new York Knicks.

Golden State hosts the Clippers in the regular-season opener Dec. 25.

T’Wolves courting free agent Barea

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — the Minnesota Timberwolves are closing in on a deal with free-agent point guard J.J. Barea.

Two people with knowledge of the negotiations told the Associated Press on Monday that Barea could have a deal finished as early as Tuesday. the people requested anonymity because the deal has not been announced. NBA.com first reported the agreement.

Barea spent the past five years in Dallas. he blossomed during the Mavericks’ run to the NBA title last season, using his speed and quickness to create mismatches. he averaged 9.5 points and 3.9 assists last season as the change-of-pace backup to Jason Kidd.

Barea will join point guards Ricky Rubio and Luke Ridnour in Minnesota.

The Wolves have also agreed to terms on a three-year deal with second-round draft pick Malcolm Lee.

KID CUDI – THE PRAYER LYRICS

by on December 30, 2011

Plain Pat what up?

My heart thump not from being nervous

Sometimes I’m thinking God made me special here on purpose

So all the while ’til I’m gone make my words important so

If I slip away if I die today the last thing you remember won’t

Be about some apple bottom jeans with the boots with the fur

Baby how I dream of being free since my birth

Cursed but the demons I confronted would disperse disperse

Have you ever heard of some shit so real

Beyond from the heart from the soul you can feel

And if I die before I wake I pray the lord my soul to take

But please don’t cry just know that I have made these songs for you

And if I die before I wake I pray the lord my soul to take

Cause I’m ready for the funeral

My mind runs I can never catch it even if I got a head start

God please tell me I am feeling so alone way

I don’t need to worry cause I know the world’ll feel this nigga

Blessing in disguise but I am not hiding who I am open your eyes bro

If I ever met you I appreciate the love yo

Girls that I dated it’s okay I am not mad yo

Unless you stabbed me in the heart no love ho this shit is so ill

Play it back from the top if you recognize real

I’m ready for the funeral hey-hey

I’m ready for the funeral hey

I’m ready for the funeral

I’m ready for the funeral

LOS ANGELES — as Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose prepared Sunday to open the season against the Los Angeles Lakers, his mind was focused on the present, but he did entertain a question about the future.

There’s no other team I think I would rather be on than the Chicago Bulls. me living in another city, no. [Chicago is] just a perfect place for me.

”– Derrick Rose

And his answer to whether he’d like to emulate Kobe Bryant by playing his entire career in one city should sit well with Bulls fans.

“I would love to,” he said.

As preposterous as it sounds, Rose — the 23-year-old MVP from Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood — didn’t want to be presumptuous and said he would stay unless the Bulls traded him.

“It’s all up to them,” he said. “I would love to be here, be a Bull for the rest of my life, but it’s really not up to me.

“For sure. There’s no other team I think I would rather be on than the Chicago Bulls. me living in another city, no. (Chicago is) just a perfect place for me.”

And the team obviously feels likewise after signing Rose to a five-year, $94 million extension.

Rose’s rise from rookie of the year to All-Star to MVP has created expectations that he’s willing to accept from his hometown fans.

“They’re going to always expect high expectations from you,” he said. “But that pushes you as a player. Knowing me, I push myself a lot, but I’m from Chicago. like I always say, I want to give them something to brag about.

“They’re appreciative. If we give them (just one championship), they’ll accept it,” he said with a laugh. “We’ve been in a drought for a very long time. so they’ll understand.”

Rose’s confidence level was surging before the opener.

“I’ve never felt this confident,” he said. “Knowing that we have almost the same pieces here. We were close last year and we’re just trying to do better than last year.”

The one big difference on the Bulls is the addition of shooting guard Rip Hamilton, who flashed signs of fitting in well during his one preseason game with the Bulls.

“We play a more precise game,” Rose said. “Where no matter what’s going on in the game, we’re consistent in one area and that’s defense. and I think that, with the guys that we have, and knowing what we went through, we don’t want to settle for anything less.”

Rose admitted on Saturday the he still hasn’t gotten over the fact that the Miami Heat beat the Bulls in the Eastern Conference finals last season. It’s clear he has used that loss as motivation throughout the summer.

“It hurt,” he said. “But we always have another year. This year we got another chance at it. We’re just happy that the season has started. and it gives us another run to go for it.”

Detroit Lions – Quarterback or Bust

by on December 25, 2011

Just WIN baby will the Lions ever win? will they ever win? YES the Detroit Lions will WIN a Super Bowl again and they will always be my favorite team. why? I just love them. I love the fans, the atmosphere, and of course Thanksgiving Day turkey and my Detroit Lions. I have been a Lion fan now 31 years so I have a few insights into this up and coming team.

In this article I will be sharing how the Detroit Lions can turn their franchise around, and my hope and prayer is that someday it will make it’s way up to the Ford Family’s home and that they will read it and act on it to make the Detroit Lions a championship team.

First of all, we need a good quarterback. in the 30 years I’ve watched the lion, we’ve NEVER had a great quarterback. I’ll say it again, we’ve NEVER had a great quarterback. sure we’ve had good quarterbacks like Rodney Peete, to name one, but to be honest with you I’ve blotted out most quarterbacks’ names from my memory because they all made so many stupid mistakes out on the field

Why won’t the Ford family simply invest in a good quarterback? Is it because they are cheap, cheap, cheap? many think so I hope not. please change our future and invest in a GREAT not GOOD quarterback

I honestly believe that even though you’ve hired the best coaches, the best offensive coordinator, and the BEST everything else we are STILL not going to rise to the top without a hall-of-fame caliber quarterback. Let’s see what we can do to get USC’s Matt Leinart or someone else who has a MAJOR name in football. Lions, you need to bring a quarterback over who has a major name and is in his prime, not ready to retire

Wait a minute, I think I hear some play by play: Joe fades back, passes to Barry in the end zone, Touchdown (repeat). Joe slips through two defenders finds Herman Moore wide open in the end zone for his third touchdown of the day. Montana runs the ball to the sideline, passes to Barry up the middle touchdown, Montana flips the ball to Sanders on the sweep, touchdown This is too easy Dan, I’d say the Lions are untouchable this season. Yeah I’d say so too Howard. they are money in the bank. it aught to be illegal to have Montana and Sanders on the same football field playing with the same helmets on. I heard that one Howard

How would the lions of the 80′s with Barry Sanders done under Dan Marino? Not bad I’d say. may have given him one of his first championship rings. Dan, if you’re reading, you can still come out of retirement and play for the Lions, it’s fine with me.

The point is the Lions have to purchase a quarterback someday that is worth his weight in GOLD. It’s like the Lions are willing to purchase the pistons, the rings, the valves, the outside flared fenders, the Holley Carburetor, the Mallory Ignition, the fuel injection, the chrome bumpers, the sunroof, the leather interior, but not the ENGINE the quarterback IS the engine of the football team.

Please, Ford family, with all due respect, I sincerely thank you for the investments that you’ve made from the bottom of my heart, but you need to invest in a quarterback. then, and only then, will the Lions become Super Bowl Champions once again.

Take it from a 30 year fan who just keeps growing fonder of this great team: It’s time for the Lions to get their Joe Montana. then we have a shot at a title. then and ONLY then will we win the big game. mark my words, we will certainly win with a quality quarterback. you can take that to the bank, make the deposit, and then cash it out

Happy Holidays

by on December 23, 2011

Therefore, Paul begins 1 Corinthians 8:4, concluding what preceded this verse. The first three verses of chapter eight establish the ground or basis of what follows. Because our love of God is based upon our mutual covenantal faithfulness, God’s covenantal faithfulness toward us and our covenantal faithfulness toward God, a faithfulness that impacts everything that we say and do as Christians, then that covenantal faithfulness must also guide our approach and behavior with regard to the holiday festivities previously mentioned.

The Corinthians had been invited to attend certain holiday festivities where the food served had been blessed or consecrated to other gods. It had been offered to idols (1 Corinthians 8:4). Should faithful Christians eat such food and participate in such events or not?

Paul responded by reminding the Corinthians that the idols in question were not real. they were not gods at all. they were false gods, illusions of the mind, imaginary. thus, they had no real power or effect in the world. they were nothing. The God of Scripture is the only real God.

1 Corinthians 8:5-6 are understood to be parenthetical explanations of how it is that the world proclaims that there are many Gods, whereas Scripture proclaims that there is only one God who is Trinitarian. Verse 5 tells us two important things. First, that the many gods of the Greek and Roman pantheons are merely so-called gods. they are gods only in name, but not in function or power. And secondly, that of these so-called gods there are many . and many ‘lords.’ many people are involved in the authority structures of these so-called gods. but in spite of all of this, Christians know that there is only one true God. Those who worship other gods are mistaken.

When Paul said, yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist (v1 Corinthians 8:6), he did not mean that there is one God for Christians and many gods for other people. he did not mean that it was true for Christians to believe in one God and that it was true for others to believe in many gods. he was not speaking relatively. he meant that for those who understand the truth – Christians – there is only one God, the God of Scripture.

The remainder of Paul’s sentence tells us that we exist for God, for God’s purposes and not our own. And that we exist through God, through Jesus Christ. he equates God and Jesus Christ and says that they are one. And that our own lives have been created by God and for God. We are not our own. in chapter six Paul said, do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. so glorify God in your body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). We belong to God, and God does with us whatever he desires (Romans 9:18).

Christians are not free in the sense that they can do whatever they want. Christians are free to want what God wants for them. We are free to be what God has created us to be. We are free to do what God wants us to do. We are not our own, but are owned by another.

We cannot improve upon God’s creation. At best we can be what God has called us to be in Christ. And through Christ we can work to eliminate sin, but only as we participate in God’s redemption plan. We cannot improve upon God’s redemption.

All of this is to say that we must be who God has called us to be, do what God has called us to do, and worship as God has called us to worship. To do more or less is a function of faithlessness. We must remember Moses’ injunction to God’s people for we are God’s people:

The Lord will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you shall only go up and not down, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, being careful to do them, and if you do not turn aside from any of the words that I command you today, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them (Deuteronomy 28:12-14).

The multiculturalism that we have been taught in school does not change any of this. Rather, it is simply a mark of our (American) unfaithfulness to the gifts that God has bestowed upon us.
