It’s not yet a Craigslist killer, but eBay’s free classifieds site Kijiji is taking off in the U.S. eBay, of course, is also an investor in Craigslist, but its 25 percent stake doesn’t give it a controlling interest and the other 75 percent is not for sale. So in March, 2005, eBay launched Kijiji as its own competing free classifieds site overseas. then last summer, it launched a U.S. version of the site.

Since then, the U.S. site alone has grown from 362,000 visitors in July, 2007 to 1.8 million in January, according to comScore. (If you count U.S. visits to Kijiji’s international sites as well, the number is 2.3 million). In comparison, Microsoft’s classified site, Windows Live Expo, attracted only 176,000 visitors in January, Yahoo Classifieds attracted 97,000, and neither Google’s classifieds site nor Google Base even registers on comScore.

Kijiji’s visitor stats are still less than 10 percent of the 26.7 million people in the U.S. who went to Craigslist in January, but comScore puts Kijiji as the sixth most visited classifieds site in the U.S. (after Craigslist, sites owned by Dominion Enterprises like Homes.com, AutoTrader, Cars.com, and Apartments.com). Kijiji is ahead of classifieds sites like Oodle (No. 9, with 1.3 million U.S. visitors in January) and Vast (No. 20, with 444,000).

eBay is obviously doing something right with Kijiji. but can it ever catch up to Craigslist?

Watch out Craigslist, Sister Site Kijiji Is Taking Off

Google has been named the world’s most powerful brand once again by Millward Brown as part of its annual BrandZ ranking. the company has dominated BrandZ’s chart for two out of its three years in existence, showing that Google’s brand is on a winning streak.

In order to come up with these rankings, the market research firm combines consumer research with public financial data. Millward Brown says that it has conducted interviews with over 1 million consumers in order to get a good idea of public perception, and then combines this data with financial data from Bloomberg and Datamonitor to try and measure brand contribution (a brand’s effectiveness in driving earnings) and brand momentum.

The top five brands in the 2008 ranking go like this: Google, GE, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, and China Mobile. Incidentally, these were also the top five in 2007, according to Millward Brown, although a number of other brands in the Top 100 ranking moved around quite a bit. for example, as we discussed on Infinite Loop yesterday, Apple stood at number 14 in BrandZ’s 2007 ranking, but moved up to number seven this year. IBM also moved up, from number nine to number six. Rankings for companies like Marlboro and Wal-Mart both fell this year, in addition to Citi, UPS, and Home Depot.

When Millward Brown first launched its BrandZ ranking in 2006, Google came in at number seven, with Microsoft sitting at number one. Millward Brown says that there were a few trends that changed the rankings significantly between 2006 and 2007, such as an increase in converging technologies—”[t]he ability to mix and match different services (voice, data, GPS, music, internet, email etc) and deliver them over different devices.” this is, of course, an area that Google has thrust itself into by creating mobile-friendly versions of most of its services and its backing of Android.

Delivering on corporate social responsibility was also a big issue that year. Although Millward Brown mostly focused on oil and auto companies in regards to social responsibility, consumers see Google as quite trustworthy when it comes to trusting the company to take care of our data and protect it from the government if necessary. on the flipside, Microsoft is often regarded with some level of distrust when it comes to social responsibility, no doubt a result of its continual string of antitrust allegations.

Of course, BrandZ isn’t the only ranking of top brands, although the major players often float near the top on all of them. last month, brandchannel.com said that Apple came out on top for almost all categories in its brand survey, but Google was still cited as having a consumer-friendly approach to its business.

The Marlboro Man will tell you how easy it can be to slide off the summit of the world’s most valuable brands—Marlboro was the number one brand in 1992 and the second-ranked brand in 1995 according to a Financial World magazine report. IBM was number three and Disney number five (they are currently at number six and 23 on BrandZ, respectively). even worse, Financial World had AT&T at number 10 in 1995, while today it ranks at number 55 on BrandZ. the top brand in 1995? Coca-Cola.

A world’s most valuable brand ranking compiled by BusinessWeek and Interbrand for 2000 had Coca-Cola in the top spot, followed by IBM, Microsoft, GE, and Nokia. Apple was way down at number 49, with the surveyors noting that “Apple continues to churn out eye-pleasing products but struggles to ?nd takers beyond the core Mac faithful.” Google wasn’t even a blip on the brand radar at that point.

What lessons can Google take away from these changes? It can stay on top of emerging technologies and continue to pump up its perception as a company that “does no evil” among the public. In fact, these are areas where Microsoft is apparently improving as well—its “brand value” still increased by 29 percent between 2007 and 2008, according to BrandZ’s calculations. Still, with companies like Apple and BlackBerry quickly ascending the list (both had brand value changes in the triple digits this year), Google has to keep innovating if it wants to remain number one.

@xcal78: Cost of change? if you are totally dependent on Microsoft for training and maintenance of your business, then actually taking responsibility for your systems is going to be a big reality check, and just as you did with Microsoft, if you need someone else to make these changes for you, not only is there going to be a diminished benefit, but it is going to cost you. low end MS tech support is very cheap; they are everywhere. Linux support… different. Not as many Linux people sitting around with nothing to do, AND with so much documentation for open source software also being free, and with so many forums, and advanced howto’s for everything, anything left is going to require a guru. this is where there is big money. there is also money for large scale startup, which is more of less and should be an initial training (otrherwise what do you do if/when it breaks?)

The real problem and expense is an issue of management. Microsoft makes it as easy as possible for people to get locked in by the promise of doing all the work for you. with Linux, there is an expectation for people to take some initiative either by learning it yourself, or hiring someone to remember it all. Fortunately this is easy because for the most part, there is primary or third party documentation that is easy to follow and understand. But like with anything else, if you don’t try, you are going to pay for it. between all the people that read the documentation and made an effort and are seeking expert help for a few pieces, they are going to pay the same price for support per hour as you to be hand held through everything.

So average TCO is very misleading, and even median TCO makes some bad assumptions. how about look at the range of TCO and listen and take advice from those that were able to do successful implementations. Listen to what worked and didn’t work. When you look for advice, do you want the average story, or the most common story? Of course not! you want to know cost / effort of what works + cost of worst possible scenario. Using this information, you can decide what resources are important to invest in to reduce business expenses. Microsoft, Apple, Red Hat, and Sun want to offer you total business solutions. the first two specialize in simplicity, but at the expense of flexibility and diversification among others. Within those two elements, OSS typically offers modularity, and for the greatly ambitious, well documented code that is easy to add onto, whereas Microsoft and Apple limit you to API’s that can’t be audited (for whatever that is worth).

A better government I thought Americans appreciated was the idea of participation by the people. Even if most people choose not to participate, the opportunity for all to become active political members has always had a high value. While well managed use of F/OSS has survived the FUD, even if t was more expensive, isn’t there an obligation in the digital age to support transparent government through open standards? it is not impossibly expensive to enable our best and brightest to keep us aware of the way things are working, and allow any American to become one of those people?

There is no way this discussion would even be taking place if Microsoft were not an American company. why? because there is no way we are going to give that away! why should we take what should be given to the American people and give it exclusive to one very small American company. Sorry, but Microsoft is very small when you consider opening opportunity for all.

The only counter argument is “Just sell out because I don’t care”. well, you know what? I don’t buy that! the Internet is an example of what can be built on free open source software and open standards. ATM, token-ring, and mainframe systems are what came from proprietary software, which gave us great opportunities to get off the ground. TCP/IP packet switched networks were evolution and birth of digital freedom and ultimately the Internet.

Government is ready to move forward.

Apple’s Leopard operating system is taking aim at rival offerings from Microsoft. Meanwhile, Mac OS X developers get their hands on Leopard beginning Monday. And the announcements coming out of WWDC will reportedly spur display changes inside Apple retail store windows.

Apple rips Vista

We’ve been telling readers that Apple has had its sights on Redmond and Vista, and judging by the latest banner photos (below) coming out of San Francisco, the company isn’t keeping it a secret.

A banner on the second floor of the Moscone West — the host venue for this week’s World Wide Developers Conference — reads, “Mac OS X Leopard — Introducing Vista 2.0.” Similarly, one on the opposite end of the floor says, “Mac OS X Leopard — Hasta la Vista, Vista.”

Each banner features a partial shot of a black and grey Mac OS X optical disc, presumably Apple’s Leopard retail CD design. The same disc was featured in photos of an earlier WWDC banner.

Developers to receive Leopard

On a similar subject, Mac OS X developers on Monday will begin to receive the first pre-release builds of Leopard, AppleInsider been able to verify.

WWDC attendees will be the first to receive their copy of Leopard. It will come in the form of a “Leopard Preview” disc. Soon thereafter, Apple will begin seeding the same build of the operating system to other developers through its online distribution system.

Apple partners and major software companies will be first in line for online distribution of Leopard. Apple Developer Connection availability is expected to follow, likely with first priority going to higher-tier members.

New retail window displays

Within the two weeks following WWDC and its associated product announcements, Apple will be updating its retail store windows with new promotional items, tipsters have also told AppleInsider.
