Kentucky and Kansas meet for the 2012 NCAA men's basketball championship in a classic matchup of traditional powers.

NCAA basketball: National championship rightly goes to Kentucky and John Calipari

Rankings are one of the most accurate ways to judge what the best at something is. some of the time, as with keyword ranking or search engine ranking, the rankings are extremely difficult to argue with because they are based exclusively on data and opinion never enters into the rankings. However, in college sports that is not the case because rankings are picked by writers in the media and by coaches, and more often than not the tournament plays out in a way that disagrees with the rankings. one of the greatest college basketball programs of all time is the Kentucky Wildcats, who have won seven national championships and are the first school to have one two thousand games in their history. However, recently Kentucky had been on a downward swing with a bad coach and a dearth of talent befitting the greatest program in history, a problem which was solved in the season that ended in the spring.

Last season, Kentucky did not make the season ending NCAA tournament for the first time in almost twenty years, a disappointment that cost the coach, named Billy Gillispie, his job. Immediately after the firing, the athletic director knew that he had to make a brilliant new hire because if another coach he hired failed, he might get fired as well. It appeared that the candidate list for new coaches in fact only included one man. a couple days after the previous regime was ousted, Kentucky announced the hiring of one of the most winning coaches in the modern game, John Calipari of Memphis.

As soon as he was hired, living up to his reputation as a great recruiter, Calipari brought to the team a slew of talented freshmen, resulting in Kentucky having the number one ranked recruiting class at the end of the recruiting period. among these freshmen was John Wall, a player who had been picked out for greatness since he was in middle school and was almost immediately dubbed the best point guard in college basketball? also, there was Demarcus Cousins, a massive 6’11 center from Alabama with a fiery attitude on the court and gaudy points and rebounding stats to back it up. these high school superstars joining the team raised expectations to an insane level in Kentucky and around the nation for a team that would be one of the youngest in the NCAA, and Kentucky started out the season ranked as high as number 3 and as low as fifth.

The season went largely as expected, as it turns out. in his first season with the reigns Calipari presided over a team that went through the Southeastern Conference season with only two losses, away at South Carolina and away at Tennessee. following that brilliant run through the regular season, the team cruised to a win in the Southeastern Conference tournament, held this year in Nashville in front of a crowd consisting of mainly traveling Kentuckians. following that success, the Wildcats earned a number one seed in the NCAA tournament for the first time in recent history.

The NCAA tournament, however, was a slightly different story to the rest of the season. Kentucky hammered its first three opponents in the tournament, Eastern Tennessee State, Wake Forest and Cornell. But, when it came down to the round of the Elite eight things went awry and the Wildcats cold shooting, including going three for twenty three from three point range, ended the exciting season against West Virginia. Despite the slight disappointment of not reaching the Final four, it seems national title number eight is on the horizon for Kentucky.

Kentucky Basketball, A Season Review

Bruce Weber lands at Kansas State

by on March 31, 2012

Wichita, KS (Sports Network) – it didn’t take long for Kansas State to find a new men’s basketball coach and Bruce Weber apparently didn’t have to search too hard for another job after being fired at Illinois.

Kansas State has scheduled a Saturday news conference and the Wichita Eagle reports that Weber will replace Frank Martin as the Wildcats’ head coach.

Martin left Manhattan on Monday and was introduced as the new coach at South Carolina on Tuesday. K-State officials moved quickly and found its new leader in Weber, who had great success at Illinois before being fired on March 9.

Weber was dismissed one day after the Illini completed a 17-15 season, one that started 15-3 and ended with 12 losses in 14 games. he spent nine years in Champaign and finished his tenure with a record of 210-101, a pair of big ten regular-season championships and one big ten Tournament crown.

The highlight of Weber’s time at Illinois was an appearance in the NCAA Tournament championship game in the spring of 2005. the Illini lost to North Carolina in that game, but posted just two NCAA tourney wins in the seven years after that magical run.

Weber was a long-time assistant under Gene Keady, first at Western Kentucky in 1979-80 and at Purdue for the following 18 seasons. he was given his first head coaching position at Southern Illinois in 1998 and guided the Salukis to a record of 103-54 with a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances in five seasons before taking over for bill self at Illinois for the 2003-04 campaign.

In 14 seasons as a head coach, Weber owns a record of 313-155.

Martin spent the past five years at Kansas State and led the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament four times. This year’s squad finished 22-11 overall and lost to Syracuse in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

NEW ORLEANS — looking for those charming underdog stories? go find the DVD from last year.

this year’s Final four brings together an ensemble of big-name schools, all saddled with their typically big-time issues — a reminder that everything in college sports is not as pure as the NCAA and its “student-athletes” would like us to believe.

In the national semifinals Saturday, Kentucky plays Louisville and Ohio State meets Kansas. All the schools have made headlines for a variety of off-the-court reasons over the last several months, including the proliferation of one-and-done players, stories about coaches in courtrooms and a handful of financial misdeeds involving recruits, players, coaches and even ticket managers.

And so, while there are no little vs. big stories this year — the way tiny Butler or overlooked VCU beat the odds last season to make it to basketball’s pinnacle — we’re regaled with tall tales of redemption and resurrection: Teams and coaches that overcame their problems and got everyone thinking about basketball instead of the underside of a business driven by a $10.8 billion TV contract.

“There are a lot of good players out there who are performing right now,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said.

For his part, Calipari is perfecting the art of luring a player for one, maybe two seasons, to contend for a championship, then saying a guilt-free goodbye. During his more candid moments, he’ll tell you he’s no fan of the rule that allows players to leave college after a single year. but it’s out of his hands. It’s the NBA that put in the rule stating players must be 19 before they can enter the draft.

What’s a coach to do?

“I think they trust that when the year is out, they’re going to get the right information and be treated fairly,” Calipari said. “They don’t worry about it. Historically, we don’t convince kids to stay who should leave. They are going to get the information, and they know that. They are just going to play basketball.”

It means freshman Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, both projected as high lottery picks, probably will be gone after this season, and it’s not impossible to think the rest of the starting lineup — all freshmen and sophomores — could leave, as well.

Calipari, who has had NCAA trouble at every step along his college head-coaching career, said this is a price worth paying for running a “players-first” program — with players who worry about winning first, then reap the benefits when the NBA comes calling.

while he applauds his team’s unselfishness, the NCAA insists it is toughening its academic standards and isn’t so concerned with the 15 players who do leave after one year, but rather the 5,500 who don’t.

“I’ve made no secret of the fact I’d prefer to have a different model,” NCAA president mark Emmert said. “Most people want a different model. It would be nice if that were the case, but I don’t think we should blow one-and-done out of proportion and suggest this is undermining the educational mission of the NCAA.”

while the NCAA spins that issue, its rules police have spent plenty of time visiting Ohio State’s athletic department over the last several years. first, there was the firing of coach Jim O’Brien, who was found to have given money to a recruit, then later sued the school for wrongful termination because he got the ax before the NCAA had officially determined he’d done anything wrong.

Thad Matta cleaned up that mess and has led the Buckeyes to the Final four twice in the last seven years. though the basketball program has recovered nicely, the athletic department didn’t learn all its lessons: The football team is on probation because of violations that happened during Jim Tressel’s tenure.

The takeaway quote from that entire episode came from university president Gordon Gee, when asked if he was going to dismiss Tressel while the coach’s problems were still unfolding.

“no, are you kidding?” Gee said with a laugh. “let me be very clear. I’m just hoping the coach doesn’t dismiss me.”

The last year has not been the greatest for college sports, with child sex abuse allegations at Penn State and Syracuse and a number of scandals uncovered at Miami, North Carolina, Southern California, Tennessee and elsewhere.

this week, of course, is supposed to be a celebration of what’s right with college sports. yet it’s hard not to ignore some tidbits that came up on the road to the Final four:

—Louisville spent the first two weeks of the tournament off campus, not wanting to fly back and forth to play games scheduled by the NCAA in Portland and Phoenix.

—last year’s champion, Connecticut, isn’t eligible to play in the tournament next year because of NCAA academic sanctions, though the school is appealing.

—this year’s Final four coaches are making between $2.5 million and $3.8 million this season and will cash in on six-figure bonuses if they win the national title.

The NCAA hasn’t been as big a player at Kansas, but that’s not to say the Jayhawks are immune to corruption.

last may, five athletic department employees and consultants got between 37 and 57 months’ prison time for unlawfully selling football and basketball season tickets to ticket brokers and others, then pocketing the money.

Athletic director Lew Perkins saw his name sullied, and although he wasn’t accused of any wrongdoing, he retired a year ahead of schedule in the wake of the scandal.

At Louisville, the NCAA didn’t get involved, but Pitino certainly landed in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

his name was trending for months while details of his extramarital affair and the ensuing extortion trial were aired out in public. Pitino’s reputation was damaged, and the woman who tried to bribe him to keep the thing secret got a seven-year prison sentence.

“A lot of times the last two years I took a lot of grief from a lot of people saying a lot of things,” Pitino said last week after Louisville beat Florida to make his sixth Final four. “And I never thought in my life I could turn the other cheek and just walk on. And I did. And some of the most ugly things I’ve heard, I just took it inside. And today, as I look back on it, I’m real proud that you could turn the other cheek.”

this week, Pitino keeps looking forward, refusing to take the bait from all those Kentucky Wildcats fans, who may never forgive the 59-year-old coach for leaving them, heading to the NBA, then coming back a few years later to coach their archrival.

The Kentucky-Louisville story line is the best thing going this week in new Orleans, for what Calipari predicts will be an epic Final four. without any little teams cluttering up the court, this weekend will feature the most talent, Calipari says, since 2008, when he brought Memphis and Derrick Rose to the Final against Kansas and Mario Chalmers.

Jared Sullinger (Ohio State), Thomas Robinson (Kansas) and Davis (Kentucky) are first-team AP All-Americans. Those three teams all have other players who look very much like NBA material in the near future.

“2008 was ridiculous,” said Calipari, whose trip to the final later was vacated by the NCAA because of violations. “Guess what? this Final four will be very similar to that.”

Final Four sees big programs in Big Easy

The boats at the Newport Harbor may be empty, but another sport is the reason why the city by the sea is packed in March. “March madness is great for Newport,” Evan Smith of the Newport Visitors Bureau said. “And we're really excited to welcome the NCAA tournament to Rhode Island.”Four women's basketball teams will face off at the University of Rhode Island starting Sunday, but when the players are not hitting the court, they are staying in Newport. Most of the hotels are sold out completely. “So that's hundreds of thousands of dollars that's being brought in on a rather cold and chilly march weekend,” Smith said. You could see evidence of the spending all over Thams Street. The line for the Brick Alley Pub was out the door. The wait for a table was over an hour.

“There's family here. There's press. this is a big event,” Tom Desmond, General Manager of Brick Alley Pub said. “Women's basketball has really taken off. There's a big following.”It is such a huge following that Desmond has had to turn away reservations, including one from the UCONN team itself. “They had 35 to 40 people  that wanted to sit down at 7:30,” Desmond said. “That's too tough for us.”Even though March Madness is making it a little tougher for islanders to find a table, they say they welcome the basketball boost.

“This is great specially for the economy on the island,” John Dias said. “I know there have been events like this down in Providence, but if we can get 10 to 15,000 people visiting Newport over the whole weekend, it would be really great.”

Game Play Tempo

To play and win in NCAA 09 Basketball, you need to know the preferred game style of your chosen team. if you’ve gone for UCLA, you should know that perform better with balanced plays between running and half court games. A meter will show whether you’re playing a slow, moderate, or fast game tempo. Pop-up windows will reveal words of wisdom from your coaches, telling you how to best maintain, regain, or control the pace for the game.

Rival Matches

Do you study in Kansas? Then you probably hate Mizzou and everything related to it. do you study in Duke? Then you probably detest everything that has to do with UNC. These rivalries add color to the league and NCAA 09 Basketball takes that into account by incorporating a new rival-centric matching feature in the game.

When you choose the Rival game mode, you’ll be able to see which of your team’s rival schools are online. Select your opponent, strike up a match, and you can kick the ball rolling

Dynamic Post Play

New and improved post-play controls have been added to NCAA 09 Basketball to ensure that you’re in the driver’s seat at every part of the game. Your big man also has more offensive and defensive options to choose from. As it is, everything you need to win is virtually handed to you on a silver platter; you just need to know the actual playing strategies used by your chosen team.

An All-New Recruiting System

The acclaimed recruiting system used in NCAA 08 Football has finally been applied for NCAA Basketball as well. Every time you finish a task set by the team alumni or staff, you get to upgrade player performance and unlock new facilities. Scouting reports will also help you determine the best recruits for your team.

How to Play EA’s NCAA 09 Basketball Game

Most compelling storyline: What are they putting in the water up in Ohio? Four teams from the Buckeye state fought their way into the NCAA Tournament’s second weekend, marking the first time one state has ever produced four Sweet 16 teams. And at least one will advance to the Elite Eight—Cincinnati and Ohio State face off in the bottom half of the bracket in the East Region. Xavier, which was very much on the bubble heading into Selection Sunday, beat Notre Dame behind a huge day from Tu Holloway in its opener, then fended off no. 15 seed Lehigh’s upset bid behind 25 points from big man Kenny Frease. And then there’s Ohio, the 13th seed in the Midwest. The team from Athens upended Michigan and South Florida and will face a shorthanded North Carolina squad in the Sweet 16. Speaking of the Tar Heels …

Most important storyline: What’s the deal with Kendall Marshall? there is not a more irreplaceable player on any championship contender than North Carolina’s point guard extraordinaire. Marshall actually stayed in the game after he fractured a bone in his right wrist—he’s lefthanded, which is the only positive—during the Tar Heels’ victory against Creighton on Sunday, but had surgery on Monday and there’s no way of knowing whether he’ll be able to play the rest of the tournament. The initial postsurgery impression seemed positive, but that’s not worth much on Monday afternoon. if doctors say there’s no risk of further damage, that it’s just a matter of pain tolerance, another question arises: How effective does he need to be to help, not hurt, the Tar Heels? For example, is Kendall Marshall at 50 percent effective a better option than Stillman White or Justin Watts running the point for this high-powered offense? 40 percent? 25 percent? without any sort of good second option, that number’s not too high.

DeCourcy: Ranking the Sweet 16

Best game: no. 1 Kentucky vs. no. 4 Indiana, South Region. The first meeting between the teams Bob Knight will not mention by name was arguably the most entertaining regular-season basketball contest all year—Christian Watford drilled a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to send Assembly Hall into absolute pandemonium. That was the game that stamped the Hoosiers’ return to national prominence. And here’s the thing: both teams are much better right now than they were back on Dec. 10. The young Wildcats have grown into their talent, and Anthony Davis has developed into the best player in the nation. For Indiana, freshman Cody Zeller has become a nightmare for opposing coaches and forwards. We can only hope for a repeat of the December drama.

Best player matchup: Baylor’s Pierre Jackson vs. Xavier’s Tu Holloway, South Region. Back when he was a sophomore, Holloway scored 26 points in an epic Sweet 16 matchup between Xavier and Kansas State. Jordan Crawford was the star for that Musketeers team, but that game announced Holloway as the next big thing. in Xavier’s tournament-opening win against no. 7 seed Notre Dame on Friday, Holloway scored 25 points and knocked home the go-ahead running bank shot with 12 seconds left. on a team with multiple NBA big men—Perry Jones III, Quincy Miller and Quincy Acy—it’s the 5-foot-10 point guard, Jackson, who has emerged as the team’s leader on the court. he had 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting in the opener against South Dakota State, then had 15 points, 10 assists and five steals as Baylor beat Colorado to advance to the Sweet 16.

Over the last four games, N.C. State forward CJ Leslie is averaging 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds. (AP Photo)

Don’t be surprised if … Things get a little crazy in St. Louis, home of the Midwest Region, this weekend. as mentioned, the top-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels have to figure out how they’re going to operate without Kendall Marshall; even if Marshall plays, there’s no way he can be as effective as normal operating with just one hand. That gives Ohio an opportunity, relatively speaking, if the Bobcats can continue to shoot the ball well—they hit 51.2 percent from the field against Michigan and then were at 50 percent (9 of 18) from beyond the 3-point arc against South Florida. Don’t doubt D.J. Cooper when he gets hot from long range. there are few shooters with more confidence anywhere in the country. but that’s just one half of the potential fun in St. Louis, because …

Upset special: … then there’s the N.C. State-Kansas matchup. Let’s just put it this way—the seed differential (KU is the region’s no. 2 seed, N.C. State is the 11) is much greater than the talent differential. The Wolfpack played a tough schedule—a huge reason they got an at-large bid—and played most of those teams very well, but just couldn’t pull out many of those close games. in the Tournament, they’ve figured out how to win, with victories over sixth-seeded San Diego State and third-seeded Georgetown. nobody doubted former coach Sidney Lowe’s ability to recruit upper-tier talent, and those players are producing results—finally, Wolfpack fans might add—for first-year coach Mark Gottfried. Future NBA lottery pick C.J. Leslie has been playing the best basketball of his career down the stretch, and he’s just one of five players averaging double figures in scoring. this is a tough, tough matchup for the Jayhawks.

NCAA Basketball Schedule

by on March 9, 2012

NCAA Basketball games run from the beginning of November through to the beginning of April. They end with the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball Tournament. There are hundreds of games to be played during the course of the season between the colleges in Divisions 1, 2 and 3. In Division 1 alone there are 341 schools in 31 conferences. Then there are 23 Division 2 conferences. due to the sheer number of teams involved in the college games, the NCAA basketball schedule is very busy.

The NCAA basketball schedule will start around the time of Halloween and opens up with a lot of non-conference games and some tournaments. By January, the teams will all be playing each other in their particular conference. As I have said, there are quite a number of conferences and lots of teams in each. this amounts to quite a lot of games when you bear in mind the fact that each team will play all the others in the conference. Teams that come out on top in the conference league will play for the Conference Tournament. the winners of these tournaments will then automatically be a part of ‘March Madness’. this is the affectionate title given to the NCAA Basketball Tournament which gives a chance for any of the 65 teams involved to qualify as one of the Final Four. the winner out of these will come away with the National Championship trophy.

It is not always easy to get hold of an NCAA basketball schedule as the complete listing is a very comprehensive timetable. There are very few people who are actually interested in seeing the whole listing in its entirety. Most people will only be interested in their own college and the conference which it plays in. for this reason, schedules are usually split into groups.

The NCAA has a great website where you are able to check the location of games on any given day. Games are being played at least every couple of days and in the mid season period sometimes there is rarely a day goes by without a game listed. Individual colleges are also good places to get a NCAA basketball schedule. Again, they may not have a complete listing of all the games over all the conferences, but they would be able to list the games that are taking place in their particular conference and the dates of their inter-conference clashes.

Another place which can be a valuable source of information when it comes to the NCAA basketball schedule is a reputable ticket agency. the always have knowledge of the games that are being played, simply because they are responsible for ticket sales. One great website which has a comprehensive listing of all the conferences is tickectcity.com. Here it is easy to access information regarding the times and location of the games. also, as you would imagine, you will be able to buy tickets to see your favourite college team in action.

Jim Boeheim speaks on drug tests

by on March 9, 2012

NEW YORK — Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said Thursday his school told the NCAA “five years ago” about possible violations of its internal drug policy, even though the university and the NCAA both have said the self-report came over one year ago.

A reporter followed Boeheim’s remark by asking, “You got a report of it 5 years ago?” Boeheim replied with an affirmative “Uh-huh.”

Boeheim spoke at a news conference at the big East tournament. Later Thursday, the NCAA issued a statement that said it “received a self-report from Syracuse University on October 27, 2010.”

On the heels of a Yahoo! Sports report that at least 10 players participated in games over the past 10 years despite repeated failed drug tests, Syracuse last week announced it had self-reported potential violations regarding its drug-testing policy.

After the news conference, Boeheim clarified his timeline, saying it had all been going on a “long time,” but he insisted it won’t interfere with his team’s play.

Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross told the Syracuse Post-Standard on Monday that the university reported the possible violations to the NCAA “years ago.”

A Syracuse spokesperson said Boeheim’s comments were more of a general reference than an exact time frame.

Boeheim said neither he nor his team is worried about an NCAA investigation.

“All these guys care about is how they play and where their girlfriends are,” he said. “They don’t care about this stuff. Teams that lose say that. ‘Oh, we lost because of the distractions.’ That’s bull—-. Players care about how they play, how their team is playing and where they their girlfriends are. That’s it.”

The Hall of Fame coach said that he did not intentionally violate an NCAA rule.

“The one thing I should have said — I never knowingly played an ineligible player,” Boeheim said. “That is the one thing I am allowed to say.”

It has been an especially tumultuous year for the no. 2 Orange. in December, longtime associate head coach Bernie Fine was accused of sexually abusing a former team manager. The school later dismissed Fine.

And now, with the Orange eyeing their second national title, there is the cloud of an NCAA probe.

But Boeheim, who has handled his fair share of turmoil in his career, said that there was no sense worrying about the NCAA investigation until it is resolved.

“I put it away. I learned that a long time ago playing golf,” he said. “You have one bad hole, if you worry about it, you’re going to play [badly] the whole time. I won’t take it out until it’s resolved.

“But that’s the problem today. you don’t know how bad something is until it’s resolved but if you’re charged with murder and two years later they say you’re innocent, for two years you were a murderer. We’ve got to wait until it’s over and we let it all play out.”
