The military devotes a lot of money and resources to training for combat and to treating post-combat stress.  Now there’s research underway at Norwich University in Northfield that uses a tool more associated with peace than warfare to prepare military men and women.

The study is looking at whether Transcendental Meditation will not only make better soldiers, but inoculate them from the psychological trauma of combat.

VPR’s Steve Zind has this story on a group of cadets that some are calling the Oom Platoon.

Transcendental Meditation Studied For Military Use

CHICAGO — a week before Ben Breedlove died of a heart attack, the Texas teenager posted a remarkable video describing the peace and bright lights he’d found the other times his heart stopped.

Breedlove, 18, tells his story with simple note cards and the occasional smile, sitting close to the camera and stepping back just once to show the scar from when a pacemaker was implanted to help his troubled heart.

It is a remarkably hopeful video, though Breedlove also describes the fear he lived with after being born with a serious heart condition and disappointment that he could not play sports and “be the same as everyone else.”

“the first time I cheated death was when I was 4,” one of the cards said.

Breedlove had a seizure and as nurses rushed him down a hospital hallway, he told his mother of the bright light overhead.

She said she couldn’t see anything, but he felt his fear and worries washed away and couldn’t help smiling.

“I can’t even describe the peace, how peaceful it was,” he wrote. “I will NEVER forget that feeling or that day.”

Breedlove nearly died again a few months ago when his heart stopped during a routine surgery to remove his tonsils.

“It was a miracle that they brought me back,” he wrote. “I was scared to die but am SO glad I didn’t.”

Breedlove’s heart stopped again on December 6. he was at his Austin high school and sat down on a bench after feeling like he was going to faint.

He passed out and when he woke up, he couldn’t talk or move. he could only watch and listen as paramedics put shock pads on his chest.

He heard them say that his heart had stopped and that he had no pulse, which he explains by the fact that “when people’s bodies ‘die’ the brain still works for a short time.”

“I really thought to myself, this is it, I’m dying,” he wrote.

“the next thing that happened I’m not sure if it was a dream or vision. But while I was still unconscious I was in this white room. No walls, it just went on and on…”

He found himself standing with his favorite rapper, Kid Cudi, and they were both dressed in really nice suits.

“Why he was the only one there with me, I’m still trying to figure out,” Breedlove wrote.

“I had that same feeling, I couldn’t stop smiling. I then looked at myself in the mirror and I was proud of MYSELF. Of my entire life, everything I have done. IT WAS THE BEST feeling.”

Kid Cudi put his hand on his shoulder and then Breedlove’s favorite song came on, the part where Cudi raps “when will this fantasy end… when will the heaven begin?”

Cudi told him “Go now” and Breedlove woke up.

After viewing the video, the rapper said he broke down in tears watching it.

“this has really touched my heart in a way I cant describe, this is why I do what I do. Why I write my life, and why I love you all so much,” Kid Cudi wrote on his blog.

“I know Ben is at Peace, and I hope he gets a chance to sit and talk with my Dad.”

Breedlove ended his video with four final cards: “I didn’t want to leave that place. I wish I NEVER woke up. Do you believe in angels or God? I Do.”

Breedlove died at Christmas and his family said in his death notice that it was a gift from God.

“we know the Lord used the amazing life of our precious son to reach a weary world on Christmas night, just as he did over 2000 years ago with his own Son,” they wrote, and urged people to find the video that Breedlove posted on YouTube on December 18.

The video, which can been seen at http://youtu.be/tmlTHfVaU9o and http://youtu.be/a4LSEXsvRAI, soon went viral.

Somaya Reece Bosses Up

Fans of VH1′s love & Hip Hop 2 can expect less drama from Somaya Reece this time around. Here, Somaya ‘La Jefa’ Reece talks to XXL about trying to keep drama free, the explosive fight between Chrissy and Kimbella, reaching peace with Chrissy and her very own tequila, La Jefa. It’s time to boss up!

XXLMag.com: how will your role change this season?

Somaya Reece: well, I’m still a regular cast member. I really feel that this time around, I decided to turn a new leaf and really practice what I came to do in New York which was focus on my music and not let the drama consume me. have you seen Season 1? That’s all it was and it completely overshadowed my music. So, this time around, I’m all about my paper and I don’t care what a hater has to say. it can’t affect me. you can clearly see what it’s about for me this season. I’m definitely focused on my music and my other businesses. I have my Tequilla company – La Jefa Tequilla – and we are a multi-million-dollar business. I’m not the focus of this season [Laughs].

After the first episode, everyone is talking about this fight between Kimbella and Chrissy. What’s your take on it?

It’s definitely something that…well, it doesn’t involve me, so it’s difficult for me to comment on. I made a really big effort to get to know why it happened and listen to everyone involved. it happened so fast that it’s just really hard to wrap your brain around it.

Did your relationship with Chrissy change for the better this season?

Yes, it did. There was definitely a breakthrough. from the beginning, I tried to let [Chrissy] know that I don’t want in any way to make her think that I’m trying to disrupt her in her relationship and it was business for me [working with Jim Jones]. I was always open to forgiving and forgetting. There was a breakthrough there.

How about with Olivia?

I tried my best is all I can say and that’s the right thing to do. There was a different side of her that I seen. There’s a lot of different layers to her.

Updating a previous report, Emily VanCamp is indeed parting ways with Brothers & Sisters and her role of Rebecca at the start of the ABC series’ upcoming season this fall.

Below are excerpts from an interview Emily gave with EW, where she sets the record straight about her departure, what happens to Rebecca, what’s next for her and more.

On her exit: “I’m coming back for a couple of episodes, which I’m really excited about. I feel like Rebecca has run her course. The deal I was offered this year was for two more years, and I felt like since renegotiations were happening, maybe it would be the right time to move on.”

“I’ve been doing this for a very long time, and other opportunities have presented themselves that I haven’t been able to do. I’ve had such an amazing four years on the show and I felt like maybe it was time. It was a big risk, but I’m really excited about it.”

Emily VanCamp will be missed, but she seems at peace with leaving Brothers & Sisters, which she calls a mutual decision with producers, rather than a case of being written out.

On her (brief) return: “I’m definitely going back for 2-3 episodes at the beginning of the season. I’m really excited about the story. I spoke to our showrunner, David Marshall Grant, and he’s already come up with some great story lines for the next season.”

On speculation that she was let go due to budget constraints: “I’d like to think that it was a mutual agreement. I don’t really make decisions based on [money only]. For me, it was really a creative thing. I did a lot of soul-searching. It’s a big risk for me to take.”

On her fellow cast members’ reactions: “I think everyone sort of knew what was happening with my character and the relationship between Justin and Rebecca. there was a lot of fighting [between them]. It wasn’t moving forward in a way that was productive or exciting.”

“I think this will give Dave Annable [Justin] an opportunity to do some different things, which will be exciting for him. I don’t think that anyone will disagree with what I’m doing. I think mostly they’ll be happy for me. It really is not an ego thing whatsoever.”

On her future: I’ve been doing television for a long time. I’d love to do some theater. I’ve thought about going back to school. there are so many things that are going through my brain. I’m 24 now, and I want to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone.”

“Right now I’m also working on a Hallmark movie right now called Let Them Shine. I’m playing a teacher, which I always wanted to do.”

Will you miss Rebecca on Brothers & Sisters? Had her character run its course? are you looking forward to the new season or dreading the changes? Discuss!

News is just in, and it is very sad for those who are still fans of Rue McClanahan’s work in the Golden Girls, as she has passed away. Here is the snippet from People Magazine:

Golden Girl Rue McClanahan has died at the age of 76.
“She passed away at 1 a.m. this morning,” her manager, Barbara Lawrence, tells PEOPLE. “She had a massive stroke.”
McClanahan, who played man-happy Blanche Devereaux on the still-popular ’80s sitcom Golden Girls, had suffered a minor stroke earlier this year while recovering from bypass surgery. Lawrence adds that at the time of her death Thursday, McClanahan “had her family with her. She went in peace.”

Just as popular as the rest of the cast and equally as important, Rue played Blanche Devereaux, the oft ridiculed overtly sexy and flirty member of the quartet. Before that she was in Maude, playing Maude’s (Bea Arthur) best friend, Vivian Harmon. She will never be forgotten, especially as long a fans of the Golden Girls continue to demand the show run in syndication. She can once again hang out with her pal in Heaven. Rest peacefully, Rue.
