Two Los Angeles women recounted their harrowing escape from the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia, which ran aground and tipped over off the Italian coast.

"we were crawling up a hallway, in the dark, with only the light from the life vest strobe flashing," Georgia Ananias, 61, told the associated Press. "we could hear plates and dishes crashing, people slamming against walls."

"Have you seen 'Titanic?' That's exactly what it was," added her daughter Valerie Ananias, 31, whom the AP identified as a schoolteacher from Los Angeles.

The 9-year-old Michigan girl taunted on Facebook by neighbors while she suffered from a terminal disease died Wednesday, according to WXYZ-TV.

Kathleen Edward of Trenton, Mich., died from Huntington’s disease, the same genetic degenerative brain disorder that took her mother’s life in 2009.

Back in late 2010, 33-year-old Jennifer Petkov, who lived on the same block as Kathleen’s family, allegedly began cyberbullying the little girl.

On a Facebook page under Petkov’s name, there were images of Kathleen’s mother, Laura, in the arms of the Grim Reaper and Kathleen above a set of crossbones. Neighbors also accused Petkov and her husband Scott of building a coffin, putting it on their truck and driving past the Edward home, honking the horn.

When asked by a reporter from Detroit television station WJBK why she posted the photos, Jennifer Petkov said it was for “personal satisfaction” and because it upset the child’s grandmother. At the time, the two were locked in a longstanding feud that Kathleen’s grandmother said involved Petkov’s being upset because she believed her children weren’t invited to a birthday party the grandmother threw.

The little girl’s plight attracted attention around the world, and social media pages attacking Petkov sprang up online. the Petkovs also allegedly received death threats and had eggs thrown at their house. Jennifer Petkov later apologized to the Edward family, telling a local newspaper her actions were “ignorant.”

In February 2011, the news web site MLive.com reported that Petkov pleaded guilty to assaulting another neighbor and as part of a plea deal, agreed to serve 18 months probation and was ordered to move out of her house and stay away from the neighbor as well as undergo a psychological evaluation.

At the time the news of the bullying broke, mental health experts told ABCNews.com that without knowing more about the Petkovs, it’s difficult to say exactly why the couple behaved the way they did. the experts believe there could be a variety of reasons for their behavior, including poor conflict resolution skills, a lack of moral development and the desire to bully.

An ‘Extreme Case’ of Cyber-bullying

“This is probably the most extreme case [of cyber-bullying] I’ve ever heard of,” said Cheryl Dellasega, author and professor of humanities at Penn State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Penn. “It’s another way that people can say things that are really cruel that they wouldn’t say to somebody’s face. They’re angry, resentful and jealous and put it up on Facebook knowing that the other person will see it.”

Peter Sheras, a clinical psychologist and professor at the University of Virginia as well as an author of several books on bullying, said if Petkov did exhibit that type of behavior, it’s more indicative of an inability to settle disputes.

“We don’t have very good skills at managing conflict,” said Sheras. “We don’t have enough mechanisms for socializing people into civility.”

Dr. Ken Robbins, clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin, said, “Some people don’t make it to full moral development and don’t learn about empathy or feel guilt or remorse.”

He also characterized the behavior as bullying, and said adults who are bullies lash out at others for the same reason children who are bullies do.

“It’s a way to feel like they’re taking control of a situation, acquiring power by demeaning others and by making others feel humiliated.”

As of now, I’m one of the first ones to be invited in the second round to join Diaspora – the social network that promised a rock-solid alternative to those unhappy with Facebook. The main aim of the Diaspora project is to give the users ownership of their own data and control over their online assets – profiles, photos, videos, liked content and so on. While the basic concept of Diaspora is that of a social network where you can share all your stuff with people you want; Diaspora aims to decentralize the network and let you host your data on your own servers (and calls them ‘pods’). The founders of the project had raised $200,000 and put Ruby On Rails to some serious use. The first version of their social network was released last year around September, but users quickly discovered a number of security holes. The site was redesigned for Alpha launch and it seems that invites are being sent out.  I just received mine and decided to give Diaspora a look.

Diaspora is Open. Are you Joining it?

I’m not a fan of Social Networks and rarely login to Facebook or Google+. The problem that concerns majority of the geeks out there is Facebook’s centralized network that gives ownership of your data to the company. Once you accept the invite, you’re taken to a sign-up page where you can create your Diaspora id and login. Once you’re logged in, you’re asked to enter your name and create/follow few hashtags. you may chose to skip the step and directly head over to your Diaspora stream. From my limited knowledge about social networks; I can tell you that the interface and concepts look very similar to Facebook & Google+. for example, the middle column displays the updates from your friends and people in your ‘aspects’ – which is your ‘Google+ Circle’. you can get notifications for @mentions, and post your status updates.

There’s an easy Facebook integration mechanism that lets you connect to and import all your important data to Diaspora. The site makes it easy for everyone to download their data, profile (as XML) and close your account (unlike Facebook). The developers have released cubbi.es app to showcase the power of the platform for building apps.

The base has been built and the development team has a long way to go. is Diaspora an alternative to Facebook or Google+? at this point; no. but it does provide an alternative for those who really want to own their data an alternative to socialize on the Internet without losing the grip & letting someone else control their privacy. The Diaspora provides easy integration and seamless transfer between other social networks which makes it easier for users to adopt it.

If you’ve received your invites, we’d like to know your views about Diaspora. do you think you’ll use Diaspora as your primary login for your social networking needs?

We love great gowns, but we really live for the fashion fails on the red carpet. Check out the stars who really missed the mark at this year’s Emmy Awards:First up – Gwyneth Paltrow. two pieces equal double trouble for Gwenny. her hair and make-up look flawless and her body is amazing, but the black lace midriff-baring Gucci gown pushed the envelop (and not in a good way.)Next – Julianna Margulies. The white Armani Prive with the space age bustier looks like something even Judy Jetson wouldn’t want in her closet. Then there’s Zooey Deschanel who chose a gown in a an interesting shade – Pepto-Bismol. Heidi Klum should have said no to designer Christian Siriano.  The color is great, but there’s way too much going on below.Dianna Agron was a major fail in a royal blue gown. Just say no to baggy draping and the prom updo.Kristen Wiig should hope no real bridesmaid every tries to copy her dress.

Brad Pitt is backtracking from recent comments he made about his ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston, and their marriage.

In an interview with Parade magazine, Pitt — who next stars in Moneyball, which recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival — seemed to criticize Aniston, to whom he was married from 2000-05.

“I spent the ‘90s trying to hide out, trying to duck the full celebrity cacophony," he said. "I started to get sick of myself sitting on a couch, holding a joint, hiding out. It started feeling pathetic. It became very clear to me that I was intent on trying to find a movie about an interesting life, but I wasn’t living an interesting life myself. I think that my marriage [to Aniston] had something to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn’t."

FILM REVIEW: 'Moneyball'

The quotes received a great deal of media attention after they were posted on Parade's website Thursday. later in the day, Pitt issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter through his reps at CAA in which he clarified what he was trying to say and praised Aniston.

"It grieves me that this was interpreted this way," he said. "Jen is an incredibly giving, loving and hilarious woman who remains my friend. It is an important relationship I value greatly. The point I was trying to make is not that Jen was dull, but that I was becoming dull to myself — and that, I am responsible for."

Pitt has largely remained silent about Aniston and their marriage since they got divorced six years ago. However, he did raise eyebrows when he posed with Jolie for a family-themed shoot in the July 2005 issue of W magazine, not long after his split with Aniston.

After the magazine came out, Aniston remarked that he was missing a "sensitivity chip."

Pitt — who has six children with Angelina Jolie — is on the promotional tour for Moneyball, which opens Sept. 23.  In the movie, which Steven Zaillian adapted from Michael Lewis' best-selling book, Pitt plays Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane, a role that is earning him Oscar buzz.

Ali Lohan's mom, Dina, and sister Lindsay, as well as her modeling reps, have all been super busy screaming that the emaciated and greatly altered Ali has not had any surgery. good to know, considering the girl's not even of age yet.

When Ali Lohan broke onto the modeling scene, she appeared to be trying to make a name for herself and not riding the coattails of her sister, Lindsay. even though some of her early modeling work was questionable, nothing shocked people so much as when

There's no reason to think Ali Lohan might have a potentially life threatening eating disorder, unless you're judging her just based on her weight and 201109.

Just when you think the Lohan family couldn't get more effed up (I was pretty sure that happened when Michael Lohan underwent training to become a minister; how wrong I was!), new photos of Ali Lohan's, 17, new face hit the Internet. But don't worry!
