Missoni, the Sumirago Fashion House

by on September 17, 2011

Missoni is often considered one of the most beautiful fashion houses in the entire world. Although every design they put forth may not be cutting-edge, the style is always there. they are one of the only fashion brands to carry a reputation for consistent beauty. Missoni’s powerful tradition of creating new products has trickled down to their competitors. the business has meager beginnings, starting in 1953 to little acclaim and eventually building a lavish and luxurious fashion empire. the Missoni name has come a long way since the days of a basement studio in Sumirago, Milan.

Rosita and Ottavio Missoni met during the 1948 Olympic Games in London, England. Carrying on a relationship for the next five years, the two wed in 1953 and decided to take the plunge into fashion designing. they started a very small knitwear operation in the aforementioned Milan basement, and after much hard work and meager sales, the line started to take off in the 1960s.

It was during this time that the brand Missoni began to turn heads due to the colorful palettes, unique textures and a wide range of fabrics. the Missoni’s definitely had more than one ace in the deck, proving time and again that they could produce chic originality on demand.

Although Missoni picked up a head of steam in Italy, their brand was relatively unknown around the world. this all changed when Diana Vreeland of American Vogue took a liking to one of Missoni’s fashions and mentioned them in a 1970s edition of the magazine. of course, Vogue was the bible to fashionable American women in the 1970s. if it was printed in those crisp, clean pages, it had to be right. After the article ran, Missoni was on the forefront of the American woman’s mind, and their fashion sales exploded.

The family business started to grow tremendously. There was no possible way that the couple, juggling children and work now, could keep up with the demand – even with a few employees. Suddenly, the small family brand had become a conglomerate.

Many employees were hired and a large factory was built to handle the demand. Missoni was now found in some of the world’s most selective markets, and the sale numbers were huge. Over the years, the Missoni’s children have stepped in to help keep the line young and modern, appealing to younger women.

When the line started, the husband and wife couple created a unique logo that is their trademark: colored strips on all their clothing. With the fashions Missoni releases today, it’s like playing Where’s Waldo? when locating the stripes on some of the items, but they are still there.

This tradition is something the younger Missoni’s have kept alive and well. the tradition of Missoni is what makes them so unique in their clothing. While a lot of brands have drastically changed with the times and become unrecognizable, Missoni has modernized beautifully, never losing their originality. this is one of the many reasons they’re still sought after today.

Jackie O's views 'horrified' grandkids

Caroline Kennedy says her daughters were ‘horrified’ by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ old-fashioned view of the role of women in taped interviews released this week.

In the 1964 interviews with Arthur Schlesinger Jr, the young widow described her marriage as ‘a rather terribly Victorian or Asiatic relationship’ and said she got all her opinions from her husband, President John F Kennedy.

Caroline Kennedy told good Morning America on Wednesday that her two daughters were ‘absolutely horrified’ when they listened to that portion of the tapes.

She said they asked: ‘Did she really think that?’

But Kennedy says the tapes are ‘just a snapshot of a world we barely recognise.’

The audio recordings are being released Wednesday along with a book, ‘Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life With John F. Kennedy.’

I'm very curious about this, if you married someone who is from a different race then you, would it be able to actually work out. because i have this friend she is chinese and i'm vietnamese we both been really good friends with each other, we do stuff like study together and hangout and make youtube videos. but would it ever be possible for us to have a relationship together ? It would really cool if i could start a relationship or even marriage with her. do you think it's actually possible ?

Of course it is. as long as there's no crossdressing involved, everyone will be happy.

To me, it doesn't matter the color of one's skin so long as you love that person and are willing to defend your postition.

I've got a white cousin who married a black man in the Southern US. They have been together for over 20 years now and are doing fantabulously with three daughters.

It's 2009… WAKE UP!

Depends how willing you are to accept each other's culture. I am white and my husband is hispanic. We have been married for 12 years and are happy.

I can see you two opening a dry cleaning business together……*sound of "Chopsticks" playing in the background*………Ancient Chinese secret! Haw Haw haw…….

Well there are "cat" people and there are "dog" people . I would definately not be eating dinner at either pagoda.

It should not matter unless there is some innate cultural hatred betwixt the Chinese and Vietnamese. go for it. Are you sure she's willing?

*** SWEET MILDRED IS MY LEADER…CRAWL INTO HER PLAYPEN WITH ME***

yes it does happen..basically the mindsets of people shuld match…..there shuld be love and understanding….moreover its fun to know a different religion and culture and their festivals and their foods

It just depends on the two cultures and the two families. I don't know how Chinese people feel about Vietnamese nor how Vietnamese feel about Chinese. in many asian cultures they focus alot on Honor. Would they consider marrying outside of the culture dishonorable? so that would be something you would have to know within your family.

In America it's done all the time and people are married for years and years. some families accept it and others don't. It can work if there is real love and committment involved and you can make the necessary compromises to make it work.

Lisa on the Television show, Housewives of Atlanta is half Black and and Half Asian. her dad is Asian and her mom is Black and they been married for years and years and had like 5 kids together. Family seems happy and welcoming (according to television).

Go for it and see what happens!

I think Inter-Racial marriages are the best kind. the differences
in culture keeps it interesting, you learn a lot from each other,
and can share ideas from both backgrounds. It could be a little
more difficult compared to a plain old marriage, but the hard
work and commitment put into it will be worth it in the end.

I am going to marry outside of my race, regardless of what my
parents or anyone else thinks. Can't wait… =)

Of course it can work out. Many people have done that. but having said that, it also needs a lot of commitment and work to have it work.

Abstract

Faultline theory suggests that negative effects of team diversity are better understood by considering the influence of different dimensions of diversity in conjunction, rather than for each dimension separately. We develop and extend the social categorization analysis that lies at the heart of faultline theory to identify a factor that attenuates the negative influence of faultlines: the extent to which the team has shared objectives. The hypothesized moderating role of shared objectives received support in a study of faultlines formed by differences in gender, tenure, and functional background in 42 top management teams. The focus on top management teams has the additional benefit of providing the first test of the relationship between diversity faultlines and objective indicators of organizational performance. We discuss how these findings, and the innovative way in which we operationalized faultlines, extend faultline theory and research as well as offer guidelines to manage diversity faultlines.

This is so wrong. That guy had been sending her letters going on about their “relationship” which never existed. Following her and so on. The guy showed up at the Tyra Banks show and was thrown off the premises to which he threatened Tyra’s staff person by telling them he would cut their throat. The judge only feels this guy should go for an evaluation? this is terrible. Who’s to say he is harmless or one of those stalkers that will eventually try to kill her, or someone close to her?

What do you think of the Tyra Banks stalker getting no jail time?

It was a very good movie, but it left a lot of unanswered questions. Such as: Did Bernadine and James actually develop a relationship?, Did Gloria and Marvin actually get together?, Did Savannah ever find a real man?, Did Russell decide to step up to the plate and help Robin with their baby?, etc. please give feedback.

The wife of Maricopa County Supervisor Fulton Brock was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of having a three-year affair with a 17-year-old boy, police said.

Susan M. Brock, 48, is being held without bond on two counts of molestation of a child and two counts of sexual conduct with a minor, said Chandler Police Sgt. Joe Favazzo.

According to a police report, Brock is accused of picking the Chandler teen up from his home or school, and committing as many as 30 sexual acts in her car, her home, her mother’s home and secluded areas of the city. The acts did not include intercourse, police said.

The alleged affair came to light when family friends intercepted messages on the boy’s iPod Touch that included references to sex acts and the discovery of a relationship between the victim and Brock, the report said.

The friends told the teen’s parents. The victim and his parents approached police Friday, Favazzo said.”The victim was 14-years-old when it started,” he said.

In a statement, Fulton Brock said his life and that of his three children “was upended last night.”

“Even with this statement I am not sure how to express what such a shocking emotional punch to your heart and family feels like. I am stunned,” the supervisor said.

“My children are flabbergasted. You think you know someone after 28 years and I need answers as much as police officers do. I want so much to believe these allegations are not true, but if they are, I am appalled and crushed. I am a religious man. I ask all to pray for our family and those involved so that justice may best be served.”

The report details the subterfuge Brock and the teen allegedly used to avoid detection, and the gifts she allegedly gave him to aid in their communication, including an iPod, iPod Touch and two iPhones.

The report says she instructed him to at times say he was jogging so they could meet. It also says she used the moniker “Timmy Turner” in texts. that is the name of a Cartoon Network character from the TV show fairly Odd Parents.

Interim Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley said attorneys in his office first learned of the Chandler Police investigation into Susan Brock when she made her initial appearance before a judge, who denied Brock bond.

Romley said other charges could be leveled against Susan Brock, depending on the evidence that comes out of the investigation.

But those charges and the rest of the case against Susan Brock will all be handled by Pinal County Attorney James Walsh, who agreed to take the case after Romley contacted him Wednesday morning.

Brock, who represents the southeast Valley, has served on the Board of Supervisors since 1996 and was most recently re-elected in 2008. He and his wife have been married for at least 28 years, according to his county website.

Their family lives in Chandler. Brock, a Republican, has served three times as chairman of the Board of Supervisors.

CLEMSON, SC – Clemson has three two-a-day practice days set for the preseason schedule. the first day of the three took place Monday. the Tigers worked between 9:30 AM and 12:15 PM and are scheduled to work from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM in shorts for a walk-through Monday night.

The Tigers were without one of their top players on Monday. Junior defensive end Da’Quan Bowers missed all of Monday and likely will miss most of this week’s practices after his father died suddenly on Sunday morning. Bowers was very close to his father, Dennis Bowers, as the father and son performed together in Dennis Bowers Gospel Band, “the Legendary Singing Stars.” they had performed together as recently as August 1 at a church in Hopkins, SC.

“This is a difficult situation,” said Clemson Football Coach Dabo Swinney, who flew to Bamberg Sunday night to be with Da’Quan and his family. “He was very close to his dad. they had a wonderful relationship. It is always tough to lose a parent, but at age 20 to lose your father, that is very difficult.

“We have players on this team who have gone through this and they are reaching out to Da’Quan. He has an extended family here that will help him. He will have a lot of people here he can lean on.” Swinney said funeral arrangements had not been made and it is was not known how long Bowers would be away from campus.

The Tigers will practice Monday evening for about an hour, then hold the first scrimmage of the preseason on Tuesday morning. It is closed to the public and the media. there will be highlights of the scrimmage on clemsontigers.com on Tuesday afternoon.

“I am anxious to see the scrimmage. It will be the first indication of who is ready to step forward. we have a lot of areas where players can make a move to gain playing time. It is one thing to practice on the practice fields and another thing to perform in Death Valley.”

Swinney was asked about the progress of the secondary so far this August. “The secondary should be strong this year. I have been pleased with what I have seen in Marcus Gilchrist and Byron Maxwell. Gilchrist might be our best all-around defensive player from an assignment standpoint. Maxwell has transformed himself into a very good cornerback.

DeAndre McDaniel had a terrific season last year and we expect that again this year. People should not be disappointed if his interception total is not as high as last year. Don’t think he is having an off year if he only gets four interceptions. if I were an opposing offensive coordinator I would not throw the ball near him.”

At the conclusion of practice on Monday morning, Swinney introduced former Clemson All-ACC center Jeff Bostic, who was in town to watch practice and visit with former teammate Jeff Davis. Bostic was a 14-year NFL veteran with the Washington Redskins. He played on more Super Championship teams than any other former Clemson football player. His Washington Redskins teams won Super Bowls after the 1982, 1987 and 1991 seasons.

Season and single game tickets are still available for the 2010 season and can be purchased online at ClemsonTigers.com or by phone by calling 1-800-CLEMSON.

While analyzing the relationship between siblings, researchers discovered something about having a sister helps 10- to 14-year-olds not be sad.

That’s one of several intriguing findings from a new study on the impact siblings have on one another. Brigham Young University professor Laura Padilla-Walker is the lead author on the research, which also sorts out the influence of siblings and the influence of parents within families.

“Even after you account for parents’ influence, siblings do matter in unique ways,” said Padilla-Walker, who teaches in BYU’s School of Family Life.

“They give kids something that parents don’t.”

Padilla-Walker’s research stems from BYU’s Flourishing Families Project and will appear in the August issue of the Journal of Family Psychology.

The study included 395 families with more than one child, at least one of whom was an adolescent between 10 and 14 years old. The researchers gathered a wealth of information about each family’s dynamic, then followed up one year later.

Statistical analyses showed that having a sister protected adolescents from feeling lonely, unloved, guilty, self-conscious and fearful. it didn’t matter whether the sister was younger or older, or how far apart the siblings were agewise.

Brothers mattered, too. The study found that having a loving sibling of either gender promoted good deeds, such as helping a neighbor or watching out for other kids at school. in fact, loving siblings fostered charitable attitudes more than loving parents did.

The relationship between sibling affection and good deeds was twice as strong as that between parenting and good deeds.

“For parents of younger kids, the message is to encourage sibling affection,” said Padilla-Walker. “Once they get to adolescence, it’s going to be a big protective factor.”

Many parents justifiably worry about the seemingly endless fighting between siblings. The study found hostility was indeed associated with greater risk of delinquency.

Yet Padilla-Walker also sees a silver lining in the data: The fights give children a chance to learn how to make up and to regain control of their emotions, skills that come in handy down the road.

“An absence of affection seems to be a bigger problem than high levels of conflict,” Padilla-Walker said.
