Juan Uribe tied a career high with four hits and drove in three runs, and Chris Capuano pitched out of trouble for seven innings to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday night.

A.J. Ellis had a pair of RBI singles and Capuano (2-0) allowed a run, six hits and four walks while striking out five, helping the Dodgers improve to an NL-best 13-4. the left-hander needed 27 pitches to get out of the first inning unscathed, striking out Jason Heyward on a full count with the bases loaded.

Capuano escaped another jam in the fourth, retiring leadoff man Michael Bourn on a grounder with two runners in scoring position.

Uribe had an RBI single in the first and a two-run single with the bases loaded in the eighth.

Rapid Reaction: Capitals 2, Bruins 1

After 13 years of stopping every runner or receiver who entered into his vicinity, Brian Dawkins has put a halt to his own career. Monday morning on Twitter, Dawkins posted the following announcement.

The Lord has blessed me to play in the NFL for 16 years. I would like to thank the Eagles & the Broncos 4 believing In me. I would like 2 thank all my teammates & Coaches that I have been blessed 2 go to battle with. Along with u, the fans 4 helping make my career 1 that i have enjoyed tremendously. In other words. I am announcing my retirement from the NFL. #BBTB

The Denver Post attempted to talk to Dawkins after he made the announcement, but Dawkins declined, saying he was too emotional at the moment.

Dawkins missed the last five games of the Broncos season with an injury, and had been a free agent since the season ended.

In 2009, Dawkins left the Philadelphia Eagles for the Denver Broncos in a move that seemed to hurt the Eagles way more than it helped the Broncos. Dawkins wasn’t just a great player at the time, but the leader and spiritual backbone of the Eagles defense. This is over simplifying, but when Dawkins left, the Eagles were 4th in the league in points allowed. The next year, they slipped to 19th.

He retires as a nine-time Pro Bowler (seven of those coming with the Eagles) and a six-time All-Pro. He’ll go down in the books as one of the best Eagles, and one of the best safeties, of all-time. Some will side with him and some won’t, but Dawkins’ career was at least good enough to warrant a lengthy Hall of Fame discussion.

Brian Dawkins announces his retirement on Twitter

The image is a little blurry, showing a young black teenager, a wisp of dark fuzz across his upper lip, smiling slightly into the camera to reveal an array of gold-capped teeth.

It is the kind of photo young kids take every day, sent to friends by text message or Twitter post.

But this image, which purports to show slain teen Trayvon Martin, has become Exhibit a in an increasingly ugly battle over the image of the 17-year-old and his killer, George Zimmerman.

Martin was shot a month ago in a gated subdivision in Sanford, sparking nationwide protests. Zimmerman, a crime watch volunteer, told police Martin attacked him and he shot the teen in self defense. the youth’s family has pushed back, saying he was not an aggressive kid.

In a media world where everything is increasingly political, Martin’s killing has become a tug-of-war between those who see his case as an example of the dangers of racial profiling and others who contend activists have hijacked the process for their own ends.

And one of the primary battlegrounds is where news of Martin’s death first circulated: online and in social media.

The Daily Caller website, founded by Fox News pundit Tucker Carlson, featured the photo of Martin and his teeth Monday, along with messages the site’s executive editors said were retrieved by an anonymous source from the youth’s now-closed Twitter account.

According to the website, Martin tweeted under the name NO_LIMIT_N—-, passing along profanity-laced messages that joked about school and friends.

“Our readers, and most Americans, are keenly interested in the personalities and character of the two men involved in the altercation in Sanford, Fla.,” said Daily Caller executive editor David Martoko, author of the story on Martin’s tweets, in a quote emailed to me.

“We chose that photo of Trayvon Martin because it was the picture he chose to represent himself on Twitter,” Martoko added. “And also because, unlike the years-old photos of Martin that are accompanying most media reports, it represented what he looked like nearer to the end of his life.”

Initially, the circumstances of Martin’s death — an unarmed teen gunned down by a volunteer neighborhood watchman — brought sympathy for the teen’s family and condemnation of Zimmerman, who seemed to pursue the teen against advice of a 911 dispatcher.

But as noted liberal activists Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and others lead protest marches to prod police into arresting Zimmerman, a backlash has developed among conservatives skeptical of racism claims.

Another website, Wagist, posted pictures from a MySpace account featuring what it says are Martin’s multiple tattoos, eventually concluding with little evidence he “may have been a small time drug dealer.”

That conclusion may have been influenced by stories in the Orlando Sentinel and Miami Herald earlier this week detailing Martin’s three suspensions from school, including one for possessing an empty baggie with marijuana residue.

Conservative media critic Bernard Goldberg sent a tweet noting: “NYT (New York Times) calls Zimmerman ‘White Hispanic.’ Why add white?”

One explanation: because Hispanics can be white, black or brown, and journalists are communicating why people, including the Sanford police, initially assumed Zimmerman was white. Goldberg tweeted a different explanation: “because it fits the media storyline: WHITE vigilante kills unarmed black teen.”

But in all the pushing back, there have been serious mistakes.

Conservative pundit Michelle Malkin’s new site Twitchy apologized after displaying a photo it originally labelled as an image of Martin, showing a shirtless black teen with his pants hanging low, underwear showing, making an obscene gesture to camera. it was not him.

The fault lines here break along issues of race. As legislators and TV pundits wear hooded sweatshirts to protest the unfair profiling of young black men, others use images of gold teeth and tattoos to argue some justification for the fear.

Kenny Irby, a photojournalism expert at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies (which owns the Tampa Bay Times), told the Orlando Sentinel that the more recent pictures can offer a more accurate picture of how Martin looked at his time of death, while evoking old stereotypes.

“This has been a big part of how American society sees young black men,” Irby said. “All of these images have assumptions.”

When Martin’s death first exploded into a nationwide story, supporters wondered how the news of his killing would have been treated if the teen were a less sympathetic figure.

Now we may have an answer.

And we are left with an uncomfortable question: even if Martin dabbled in drugs, carried himself like a gangsta and wore tattoos, did Zimmerman have the legal right to kill him?

Pat Robertson has said some crazy things in his day. So it’s keeping with tradition that the 700 Club host should say even more crazy things, maybe even take those crazy things into the world of sports talk. He could, for example, suggest that it would serve the Broncos right if Peyton Manning, who recently replaced über-Christian Tim Tebow as Denver’s starting quarterback, got injured this coming season. oh wait, that actually happened.

Robertson has a history of ascribing unfortunate events to manifestations of God’s wrath, like the time he suggested the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti was punishment for a 19th-century Haitian pact with the devil. While he didn’t explicitly state that Manning would be injured at the hand of God, a lot of viewers think Robertson implied that there will be theological implications to the Tebow trade, given the televangelist’s record of speaking for the Almighty, and his outspoken support of Tebow as a Christian figure. I’ll let you decide for yourself what Robertson meant, though. Here’s the vid, via Media Matters.

Robertson’s right: Public Relations doesn’t bear him out. for proof of this, look no further than Twitter, where the general reaction to Robertson’s comments goes something like this: “OMG, WTF?! #STFU.” (Most comments were a bit more articulate than that, but you get the idea.) As a matter of fact, why don’t we just have a look-see at what people are saying:

In fairness to Robertson, the cabbie that drove me to work yesterday expressed a similar sentiment about Manning, although his had nothing to do with God. He just thought Manning is reckless and arrogant to keep playing with neck injuries. Then again, this guy also said that if he were Tebow, he’d quit the league after being dissed by the Broncos. Yeah, right. I’d quit, too, if my only other option were a $2.5 million salary advance and a multi-year, multi-million dollar player’s contract. But if I were Tim Tebow, I’d probably think about calling up Pat Robertson and asking him never to mention me on his show again.

Conservative internet publisher and avid blogger Andrew Breitbart died yesterday. he was 43. Friends and acquaintances described the Big Hollywood founder as intense – a passionate conversationalist who never left work no matter where he went.

But Breitbart was hounded by health problems and high blood pressure. the intensity of his personality was matched only by the intensity of his work schedule.

“Andrew also said [one] night that he had recently gone to the hospital emergency room with a tightness in his chest,” writes Toby Harnden. “When a nurse had “freaked out” at how high his blood pressure was, he had responded: “Don’t tell me that – you’ll make it even higher.”

“Breitbart had looked overweight and stressed that night. I and the others with us told him he needed to ease up on his insane travel schedule and he talked about trying to exercise more, taking downtime with his family and getting a personal assistant to take charge of his diary. But he always seemed to be on Twitter, on TV, on the phone or on a plane – and sometimes seemingly two or three of these at once.”

For many people in the new media business this is a little unsettling – a mirror, of sorts, held up to our own faces. even if we find ourselves on the opposite end of the political spectrum, we’re all online these days. All the time.

I’m not nearly the Twitter fanatic many on my Twitter feed are and I marvel, sometimes, at the way people can inhabit Twitter and stay the least bit productive.

I have trouble juggling Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus – let alone finding the time to dip my toe into LinkedIn or the myriad other social networks out there.

As fond as I am of Pinterest I’ve still never actually pinned anything there myself.

For many in new media, all of this is a huge boon to what we do. We can find all sorts of information quickly and easily. We can tap into a hundred different perspectives on a topic. But the temptation to plug in and never log back out again is strong. it can be overwhelming, this endless tide of data and opinion.

If I didn’t have a family, I’d probably be online a lot more – but spending time with my wife and kids is a priority for me. I strive for what David Roberts has called “the medium chill” even if it remains an illusive target.

The smartphone is always only a pocket away after all. It’s tempting to slide-to-unlock and check the Twitter feed, the traffic stats, the Facebook updates. Memeorandum. Techmeme. Google News. etc. ad infinitum.

See all our coverage of the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s break with Planned Parenthood here.

Yesterday, the Susan G. Komen foundation sent shock waves through the pro-choice community when it pulled its funding for breast exams from Planned Parenthood, denying a much-needed service to low-income women who rely on Planned Parenthood for a wide variety of health care services.

Overnight, those of us who are connected with a pro-choice community on places like Facebook and Twitter have seen a proliferation of articles and petitions decrying the Komen organization for this dangerous–and clearly politically motivated–decision, renewing the rallying slogan “I stand with Planned Parenthood.” but once again, as is always the case when Planned Parenthood’s funding is threatened, we must be cautious and conscious about the way we choose to frame our support for the organization.

Many Planned Parenthood supporters–along with PP itself–are quick to point out that abortions account for only 3 percent of the services that Planned Parenthood provides. but while it is all well and good to raise awareness about the variety of health care services that Planned Parenthood offers to those in need, we also must be careful not to do so in a way that further stigmatizes abortion.

In hastily repeating the 3 percent statistic, we become apologists for abortion, implying that the value of Planned Parenthood lies only in the fact that abortion accounts for only a tiny minimum of the services they provide. We are in trouble when even pro-choice activists are scrambling to downplay the necessity and the value of safe, affordable abortion care. What we need is not to reduce the importance of accessible abortion, but to reaffirm it. this is an opportunity to assert that abortion is not a necessary evil to be apologized for, but a vital part of women’s health care. And seeing as how all opposition to funding Planned Parenthood stems from an objection to abortion, it is absolutely imperative that we defend them from an angle which asserts abortion as a safe, legal, routine, and highly needed medical procedure.

We must stand with Planned Parenthood. but let’s not do so in a way that denies the extreme importance of all the services they provide. as advocates for reproductive justice, the last thing we can afford to do is allow ourselves to become complicit in the stigmatization of abortion.

Standing with Planned Parenthood Without Apologizing for Abortion

Parks and Recreation actor and longtime football fan Rob Lowe tweeted Wed. Jan. 18 that he heard a rumor from his "people" that NFL star Peyton Manning, quaterback of the Indianapolis Colts, was retiring due to his 2011 season-ending neck injury.

Though Lowe did not confirm his source, the actor has been pictured in the past with Bob Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts. Veteran NFL reporters quickly shot down the rumor, but not before others retweeted the news, poking fun at Lowe. In addition to the numerous retweets, the exchanged quickly prompted the hashtag #robloweisreporting to start trending on the popular social media site.

Lowe discussed the incident during a taping of The Ellen Degeneres show set to air Thurs. Jan. 19. Proclaiming himself "a huge, huge, huge, huge Peyton Manning," he said he was just "a regular guy … tweeting that I heard this might be in the offing."  Lowe seemed geniunely surprised by the reaction. "You learn the power of Twitter. That's a powerful, powerful medium," he says.

Host Ellen DeGeneres pressed Lowe about whether he had any inside information. but Lowe jokingly deflected: "I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you."

The original controversy started with Lowe's first tweet:

Hearing my fave, #18 Peyton Manning will not return to #NFL. Wow. #Colts

— Rob Lowe (@RobLowe) January 18, 2012

his follow up tweets:

@richeisen My people are saying Manning will retire today. what do you hear? #NFL

— Rob Lowe (@RobLowe) January 18, 2012

#Colts fans, let's hope my info is wrong. Don't like being wrong, but this time… I'm hoping#NFL #Manning

— Rob Lowe (@RobLowe) January 18, 2012

NFL reporters Chris Mortensen of ESPN and Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network immediately shot down the rumor. Mortensen spoke with Manning's father the Hall of Fame quarterback Archie Manning and LaCanfora spoke with Manning agent Tom Condon:
