united states

President Obama last night gave a speech regarding the United States position in Iraq, in which he hailed his predecessor George W. Bush as a fellow patriot. The speech came about as US troops begin to evacuate some of the country’s most hostile areas.

The President said that, ‘he and I disagreed about the war from its outset, yet no one could doubt President Bush’s support for our troops, or his love of country and commitment to our security.’ He went on to say, ‘as I have said, there were patriots who supported this war, and patriots who opposed it, he said. And all of us are united in appreciation for our servicemen and women, and our hopes for Iraqis’ future.’

Mr Obama however avoided referring to the war as a positive decision. He said that the world media criticized mr Bush harshly for his decision to go to war with Iraq in 2002, and that claims that he is incompetent and ‘dumb’ are childish allegations that hold little merit. He said that the same Oval Desk that George Bush announced to the people of America that their country will be going to war with Iraq was the same one he was now delivering his speech.

He went on to say, ‘much has changed since that night, a war to disarm a state became a fight against an insurgency. Terrorism and sectarian warfare threatened to tear Iraq apart. Thousands of Americans gave their lives; tens of thousands have been wounded. Our relations abroad were strained. Our unity at home was tested.’

Before President Obama delivered his speech he called upon mr Bush to finalise the end of combat operations in Iraq, however what the two men discussed remains highly confidential.

Bath Salts: A Legal Vice

by on January 22, 2012

The new York Times recently published an article that told of a man in Pennsylvania who broke into a monastery and stabbed a priest, a woman who cut into her skin for several days, believing there to be something underneath, and a man who jumped off of a flagpole into oncoming traffic. yes, it is quite a crazy world we live in, and these things do happen, you may be thinking to yourself. there is something peculiar, however, hidden behind each of these incidents. all three of these people, at the time of their bizarre happenings, were high on a drug colloquially known as bath salts, and were therefore (with the exception of the man who stabbed the priest) perfectly compliant with the law. how could this be? how could a substance that many now consider the most dangerous drug in the world be federally legal, both to produce and consume? Society is, at times, paradoxical.

Although its origin dates back to 2004, bath salts’ popularity in the United States has only recently started snowballing. Poison centers across the nation received a total of 303 calls regarding bath salts during 2010. In the first half of 2011 alone, there were 3,740. Despite efforts from the media and law enforcement, these numbers are rising quickly and experts anticipate them to breach 5,000 by the end of the year. These statistics speak a bitter truth: that bath salt consumption is dangerous and on the rise.

Bath salts are marketed under various names such as Ivory Wave, Vanilla Sky, Blue Magic, Gold rush, and Ocean. all varieties contain a very powerful stimulant called Methylenedioxyprovalerone (MDPV), though each brand has a unique mixture of chemicals. DEA official Gary Bogg put it well, saying, you don’t know what is in the particular product that you’re using. Consumers are not only oblivious to the ingredients, but often to the salts’ effects and dangers. one user, who we will call Mr. Z, explained how he thought that the bath salts couldn’t be that bad since they were legal. Mr. Z later reported feeling really paranoid, like something was out to get me.

The side effects are alarming and include, but are certainly not limited to, insomnia, increased heart rate, dizziness, psychotic hallucinations, and extreme anxiety. Bath salts are also hugely addictive. Director of the San Diego Poison Control system, Lee Cantrell, explained, They appear to induce more of a craving for re-dosing than other stimulants. Many users say that it takes but one trip to become hooked for years. Additionally, the comedown is harsh, and typically includes severe depression, sometimes to the point of suicide. one user described his MDPV comedown, saying that Coming off of MDPV is like winning a Mercedes and being told at the last minute that they got your name wrong.

A relevant question is where are bath salts coming from? Like most other products, they are produced and sold by a firm, whose objective – in this case sole objective – is to make a profit. For all companies, profit equals revenue minus costs. For bath salt producers, revenues are high. Like with many other drugs, a gram is sold at an inflated rate, usually between 50 to 100 dollars. Costs, for these producers, however, are relatively low. Apart from factories and intermediate goods, paying a team of chemists, marketers, and distributors are the only costs that these firms typically procure. the men and women behind these firms are not criminals, but are certainly immoral.

Bath salts are obviously harmful and potentially lethal. Around half of our states have indeed illegalized them, and others are planning to follow suit. They are still federally legal, however, and over 20 states have yet to take official action. our most salient question remains: how could this be? part of the answer is simple. since bath salts are comparatively new, and controlling a substance is a lengthy, legislative process, it is merely bad timing. the DEA and FDA need more time, and they will eventually illegalize bath salts. Mr. Cantrell explained, Illicit drug manufacturing is a constantly moving target, which makes it quite difficult to regulate or control. I know that there are wheels turning right now in California to try to outlaw certain classes of these chemicals rather than going after individual compounds. the other part of this answer is more complex. Because federally controlling a drug takes so much time, and skillful chemists can quickly alter formulas, many fear this may become a perpetual problem. Bath salt manufacturers are abusing legal loopholes because they can. the only long-term solution to this sort of problem would be for the government to change its bureaucratic process, which may not be realistic. the best active solution to this problem is to be intelligent and stay away from this synthetic evil. DEA representative Rusty Payne wisely stated, just because something is not illegal, does not mean it’s safe.

What do you think?

Stephen Colbert just isn’t in love with the idea of Mitt Romney becoming President of the United States, which his victories in Iowa and New Hampshire obviously foreshadow. But, that doesn’t mean Colbert can’t get used to the idea. When Stephen and Andy hash it all out over cosmos, Stephen learns that, sooner or later, everyone has to settle.

If  Newt Gingrich were to post a status describing his relationship with Latinos, it might best say “complicated.”

The former House Speaker garnered praise from some Latinos when he said during debates that some undocumented immigrants who have lived in the country for a long time, and stayed out of trouble with the police, should have a way to stay and work legally in the United States.

He’s also launched high-profile efforts to reach out to Latinos, specifically those who are politically conservative. One effort that made headlines – though it’s still unknown to most of the public – is the Americano, a bilingual news website for  Hispanics founded by Gingrich Communications. in December 2010, under the banner of the Americano, Gingrich held a forum for Latinos in Washington D.C.

“We created this Forum because we believe that American Hispanics play an important role in shaping the conservative dialogue in Western civilization,” said Gingrich. “The Americano stands for liberty and democracy in the U.S. and throughout the world and defends those who have this right taken away.”

But the man who made a point of learning conversational Spanish so that he could give bilingual talks, also has left many Latinos boiling mad over comments and campaign positions seen as offensive and insensitive to them.

Those controversial comments and views have touched on everything from – ironically – the “dangers” of native bilingualism to the need for a better work ethic among those in poor neighborhoods.

Gingrich was riding high in the polls late last year, and briefly held the fickle slot of front-runner in the GOP presidential contender race.

Fox News Latino has compiled a list of some issues key to Latinos, and where Gingrich stands on them.

Immigration

Gingrich drew the ire of most of his fellow GOP presidential rivals when he said in a televised debate that he favored allowing some undocumented immigrants to stay and work in the United States if they met certain criteria – lived here for at least 25 years, stayed out of trouble with police, paid taxes, among other things.

“We must reconcile the goal of legality with the reality that there are millions of immigrants currently here outside the law,” he says on his website, Newt.org, “some with a long set of family and community ties, and some with no ties.”

“A system has to be established that establishes legality but no citizenship for those with deep ties, repatriates those with no family or community ties in a dignified way, and quickly sends home those who have committed criminal and other destructive acts.”

This stance quickly drew cries of “amnesty” from proponents of a hard line on illegal immigration.

Gingrich wouldn’t flinch, firmly defending his views. he turned the criticism into a challenge to his rivals.

“I don’t see how the party that says it’s the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families which have been here a quarter-century,” Gingrich said. “I’m prepared to take the heat for saying let’s be humane in enforcing the law.”

He supports having a high-skilled guest worker program that would make it easier for international students at U.S. colleges to stay here and work.

“There should be an automatic visa to work in the United States if you graduate from an American university in an employable area,” he said at the Americano forum in 2010.

Gingrich said the general process of getting a tourist visa, as well as the system for getting a guest worker visa and permanent residency, is unnecessarily bureaucratic and expensive. that difficulty, he said, almost invites people to come to the United States illegally.

As he started falling in the polls, Gingrich began using a more hard-line tone when speaking about immigration, emphasizing the tough enforcement steps he supports and de-emphasizing the more moderate aspects he had pushed.

“I want to say ‘go home’ to lots of people,” Gingrich said to reporters. “I want to create a border that is controlled. . .I’m willing to be tough.”

Foreign Policy

Gingrich said it behooves the United States to make sure that Latin America is financially, politically and socially stable.

At the forum Gingrich said: “For very practical reasons, I try to explain to Americans that Afghanistan is a long way away, Iraq is a long way away, Mexico is our immediate neighbor.”

“We have an enormous deep concern for the development, the prosperity, the rule of law in Mexico,” Gingrich said. “Mexico is central to the future of the United States.”

Gingrich also spoke about helping Latin America realize its economic potential, and about being an overall better neighbor to the region.

“I strongly support NAFTA, and I’m happy to defend it anywhere in America,” he said. “Having prosperity and investment in Mexico is better than having the same investment in China or India, from an American perspective.”

“It’s better for us to be a country which helps the entire hemisphere grow rich and understand that if we grow rich together,” Gingrich said, “it turns out Mexico is also a great market for the United States just as Canada is a great market.”

“We have to extend that all across Latin America.”

Official English

Gingrich said that he supports making English the official language of U.S. government business.

And he supports allowing employers to require their workers to speak only English “for legitimate business purposes. . .as long as the policy is clearly posted and known to employees before they are hired.”

But his use of bilingual emails and other forms of communication to court Hispanic voters brought criticism from opponents of his Official-English views. They said it was hypocritical to lash out at government multilingual services while using Spanish to encourage Latinos to vote for him.

Pecan Pie Can Be So Addictive

by on December 23, 2011

Many people think that pecans came to the new World from Europe but actually the pecans were here and were a part of the Native Americans diet long before the first European ever set foot in present day United States. Nuts like pecans were a very important protein to the Native Americans.

It was not until the French settled new Orlans that the first wonderful desserts began to be made from the pecans the French Settlers found growing in the area. A similar desert to pralines had been made in France but it was made from almonds and it was much different from the pralines that were soon made and sold in what came to be the French Quarter of old new Orlans. Today you will find tons of pecans being turned every day into delicious pralines and sold all over new Orlans.

I have often wondered how that first pecan pie came to be. It is known that the pie was being made and sold in the French Quarter of new Orlans as early as 1750 and maybe before. And with all the wonderful cooks and chefs in new Orlans it wasn’t long before all different kinds of pecan pie was being cooked and served in new Orlans. one of the most famous variations is a Chocolate Pecan Pie and it is very popular all over new Orlans and as far west as Texas and you’ll find it being served all over the entire gulf coast.

You’ll also find miniature pecan pies served all over the south and the miniature pecan pie is now very popular as far east as North Carolina and as far west as Seattle. You’ll find them made many different ways but one of the main ingredients that never changes are the pecans. some people will tell you they must have the freshest pecans possible for their delicious pecan pies while other people like to shell the pecans, freeze them and then take them out of the freezer and produce delicious pecan pies with them. Pecans can be shelled and frozen in the freezer for up to a year with no change in their taste.

One of the recent tricks that people have started doing with pecans is they grind just a few of the pecans very fine and add those finely ground pecans to their pecan pie recipes. When you add just a couple of tablespoons of fine ground pecans to a delicious homemade pecan pie it adds a deeper flavor of pecans to your pecan pie that you can’t get any other way.

If you love pecans then you just have to make yourself some delicious glazed and baked pecans. to a pound of pecans you want to add a cup of butter and a half cup of brown sugar and stir everything up together and bake your pecan mixture on a baking pan for 45 minutes in a 350 degree oven and you’ll get pecans that will be oh so tasty and delicious. my Grandmother used to make these delicious glazed and baked pecans and they are so wonderful. We used to have homemade vanilla ice cream with a big spoon of glazed and baked pecans on top of the ice cream. you won’t ever taste anything quite as delicious.

But there is nothing that can ever compare to the taste of a big piece of pecan pie fresh baked from the oven with a big spoon of whipped cream on top of it. And I have come up with a secret ingredient that you can add to a homemade pecan pie that just takes it to a whole new level. If you would like that recipe for delicious homemade pecan pie just Click here Now. you will find a recipe that includes several secret ingredients and almost everyone that tries this pecan pie says that it is one of if not the best pecan pies that they have ever tasted.

And be sure to check out Chocolate Pecan Pie which is quickly becoming popular all over the southern United States. let me ask you a very serious question. Have you ever tasted pralines. If not then you owe it to yourself to make some delicious homemade pralines very soon. I hope there is a delicious pecan pie in your future very soon.

Presbyterian Church: Facts and Faith

by on December 20, 2011

Do you know very much about the Presbyterian Church? There are only just over a million members of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, but it is one of the leading Protestant religions outside of the U.S. with large congregations in England, Wales, and Scotland, among other countries. Reformer John Calvin, a Swiss/French theologian who at one time was studying for the Catholic priesthood, started the Presbyterian Church as a protest against what he felt were the abuses and inaccuracies in the teachings of the Catholic Church. he organized the church with a council of elders who were elected by the church so that the lay members would have a say in what went on in the church.

Calvinism, as the main tenets of the Presbyterian Church were originally called, were strongly similar to the tenets of Martin Luther, but they differed in the areas of emphasis. Calvinism also dealt with issues such as swearing and even dancing as well as church matters.

John Knox was also an important person in the founding of the Presbyterian Church. he took the message of Calvinism and the Reformation to his native Scotland while John Calvin was presenting his message in Geneva Switzerland. It was so popular that the Scottish people adopted the Presbyterian Church as the Church of Scotland, a title which it holds to this day.

When the converts to various Christian denominations in the Reformation started looking for a place to practice their religion freely and build up their churches, many turned to the new land of America. the Presbyterian Church was no different. Not only did members of the Church come to America, they played a role in laying the democratic foundation for the government. One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was the Reverend John Witherspoon, the only Christian minister to sign.

Here are some of the basic tenets and beliefs in the Presbyterian faith:

1. the only true source of information about God and what God wants us to do is the Bible.

2. We cannot earn salvation through our works. We gain salvation through the grace of God.

3. Lay members of the church as well as church leaders have the responsibility to share the gospel with others throughout the whole earth and fill roles and jobs in the church.

4. God has all authority and power. he is the most powerful being in the universe.

The Constitution and the National Debt

by on November 22, 2011

According to the Constitution, the responsibility for the National Debt clearly lies with Congress – though many members of Congress have taken a pledge that interferes with that responsibility. Congress is perilously close to defaulting on the loans the United States has received from other countries. not only is it irresponsible for our country to default on its loans, but the consequences would be serious for US citizens and for our financial institutions. although there has been much blaming, buck passing, and finger-pointing – the responsibility for the budget and the debt clearly lies with Congress. it was unwise to pass tax cuts while the country was fighting two wars and irresponsible to insist on extending the tax cuts while our country was still at war, deeply in debt, and trying to recover from an economic recession.

The Constitution is clear about the responsibilities of Congress. Article 1, Section 7 provides that all Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives and that the Senate may concur or propose amendments as on other Bills. it provides that the President must sign the bill for it to become law, and if he does not, it shall be returned to Congress to reconsider it – or Congress may overcome the President’s objection by passing it in both houses by a two thirds majority. further, Section 8 provides that Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States. among the powers Section 8 enumerates is the power to Borrow money on the credit of the United States. Would it be wrong to assume that the body given the power to borrow the money would not also be responsible for paying the debt – particularly when that same body has the responsibility of creating the budget?

Congress is clearly responsible for raising the revenue to pay our debts and run our government. Amendment XVI to the Constitution, passed in 1913, says Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration. However, many of our Legislators have sworn an oath not to carry out the responsibilities of their office. as of 2009, 172 members of the House of Representatives and 34 members of the Senate had taken Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform pledge not to raise taxes. clearly, the pledge conflicts with their responsibilities under the Constitution and those who took the pledge need to decide whether their loyalties lie with the U.S. Constitution or with an anti-tax ideology.

The associated Press

Published: November 10, 2011

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Rick Perry says he “stepped in it” during Wednesday night’s Republican debate, but insisted Thursday that it won’t force him out of the presidential race.

“Oh, shoot, no,” Perry told the associated Press Thursday morning, a day after he stood on stage unable to remember the third federal department he would cut. He was asked if his campaign, struggling to regain traction, could survive. “This ain’t a day for quitting nothing.”

Perry says others have made similar mistakes and that the screw up will humanize him. “The president of the United States said there were 57 states one time. Everybody makes mistakes,” he said.

With a blitz of early morning interviews and TV appearances, the Texas governor was looking to stem any fallout Thursday from a major misstep he made the night before during a GOP presidential debate.

In Wednesday debate, Perry said he would eliminate three federal agencies but struggled to name them.

“Commerce, Education and the — what’s the third one there? Let’s see,” the Texas governor said.

Perry’s rivals tried to bail him out, suggesting the Environmental Protection Agency.

“EPA, there you go,” Perry said, seemingly taking their word for it.

But that wasn’t it. and when pressed, the candidate drew another blank.

“Seriously?” moderator John Harwood, one of the CNBC debate hosts, asked. “You can’t name the third one?”

“The third agency of government I would do away with — the Education, the Commerce. and let’s see. I can’t. the third one, I can’t,” Perry said. “Oops.”

Later in the debate, Perry revisited the question and said he meant to call for the elimination of the Energy Department.

On Thursday, Perry said he just couldn’t think of it.

“There were so many federal agencies that come to mind, that I want to get rid of, that the Energy Department would not come out,” he said in an interview taped for ABC’s Good Morning America.

The immediate fallout has been brutal — at least on Twitter.

“Perry response will be on highlight reels for years to come,” business legend Jack Welch tweeted.

“Off screen, Dr. (Ron) Paul is sadly administering the last rites to Rick Perry,” Republican strategist Mike Murphy added. “Dr. Paul filling out paperwork as they haul Perry away. He’s ruling it a suicide.”

“Rick Perry just lost the debate. and the entire election. you only had to name three,” Tim Albrecht, the top spokesman for Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, who is unaligned in the GOP race, tweeted from his personal account.

After the debate, Perry appeared to be in damage control mode.

He’s already blasted an email out to his supporters asking them, “what part of the Federal Government would you like to forget about the most?” his website now asks supporters to vote for one.

In dramatic fashion, he bee-lined it to the “spin room” where a crush of reporters were gathered to interview campaign surrogates — and he immediately indicated that he knew he had made a really bad mistake. the first words out of his mouth as reporters crowded around: “I’m glad I had my boots on because I really stepped in it tonight.”

Still, Perry almost seemed to minimize the impact, adding: “People understand that it is our conservative principles that matter.”

“We all felt very bad for him,” Michele Bachmann, the Minnesota congresswoman also running for the nomination, said after the debate, calling the moment uncomfortable.

The next few days will shed light on whether voters care about the misstep — and punish him for it.

Over the past two weeks, Perry has sought to prove he’s still a credible challenger to Mitt Romney by rolling out detailed policy proposals. But he’s found himself dogged by suggestions that he had been drinking or taking drugs when he gave an animated speech in New Hampshire. It went viral online, prompting Perry to state that he was not, in fact, under the influence of a substance.

NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” did a Perry parody last weekend that was widely viewed.

In recent days, the candidate started to take his message directly to the voters by running sunny biographical television ads in early primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire. It’s an effort to reintroduce himself to Republican primary voters in a safer setting that circumvents the news media.

Wednesday’s was the latest tough debate for the GOP candidate who has struggled in the national spotlight since entering the race in August, the last time he was at the top of polls. his standing has fallen throughout the fall, and he’s fighting to gain ground less than two months before the leadoff Iowa caucuses.

He has committed to four more debates in a year when the GOP electorate is clearly tuned into them, but his advisers are considering skipping future ones.

Presidential debates have offered pivotal moments for decades, from Al Gore’s audible sighs in 2000 to Michael Dukakis’ tepid answer about the death penalty in 1988.

A statement by Gerald Ford in a 1976 presidential debate is among the most memorable, however. Ford famously baffled audiences when he said, “There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe.” Later pressed by the moderator, he refused to back down. the moment haunted the rest of his losing campaign.

Publicly, Perry aides sought to downplay Wednesday night’s shaky answer.

“We had a stumble of style and not substance,” insisted Ray Sullivan, Perry’s top communications adviser. “He still named two more agencies than this president” would eliminate.

Perry had no public schedule on Thursday and planned to raise money privately at events in Tennessee. his next public campaign stops were scheduled in South Carolina on Friday — a day before yet another debate.

Perry says his campaign won’t end after debate debacle

Nothing gets people more riled up than a discussion of taxes, but what alternatives are there to the current system? The negative income tax is one such possibility.

Tax Alternatives: The Negative Income Tax

The current tax system in the United States is an unmitigated disaster. nobody really denies this fact, one of the few issues that seem to unite republicans and democrats in our country. The tax code is so big, nobody has a grasp of it and that includes the IRS. while you and I may groan once a year when it is time to file our personal tax returns, larger corporations don’t have it much better. one well known corporation reported that they file the equivalent of one tax document with the IRS every 3 minutes while the may or may not pay their share, the pure burden of filing taxes for them and us is crazy.

Given the nature of the mess, one would think we would do something. The age old question, however, has been what functional alternative is there to the current mess? one proposal that has been around for some time is the negative income tax method.

The negative income tax was originally proposed in the 1960s by Milton Friedman, a fairly famous economist. His idea was not to just address the collection of taxes, but to create a system that would do away with welfare, food stamps and all types of government entitlement programs.

The basic idea at the core of the negative income tax rate system was a flat tax with a twist. The twist gets a bit complicated, but it involves tax deductions and negative income. A flat tax rate of say twenty five percent would be established on all income earned. You would then be able to take certain deductions against the tax for things like dependents [kids]. if your deductions totaled more than the total income you earned during the year, the government would then owe you all the taxes you paid in during the year and a percentage of your negative income. At this point, an example will probably help.

To make things simple, let’s assume we have a family of five with total earnings being $30,000. Further assume the total deductions that can be claimed equate to $40,000. The head of household has negative $10,000 under our system. The government would then owe the family all the money they paid in during the year in taxes from paychecks and a percentage of the $10,000 of negative income. not bad, eh?

The negative income tax rate approach never really caught on with advocates. The system is ripe for attack because taxpayers have a major temptation to tweak their financial numbers to show negative income. Frankly, the criticisms were probably justified, but that should not distract us from the idea that the current tax mess can be dealt with. There is an answer to the mess, but it will require thinking outside of the box as Milton Friedman tried to do.

Tax Alternatives: The Negative Income Tax
