Facebook to IPO May 18: WSJ

by on May 4, 2012

The great Facebook IPO, which could raise $10 billion for the company and value it at $100 billion, might happen on Friday may 18, pending delays of a day or two, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The company’s big investor-pitching pre-IPO roadshow is supposed to kick off this Monday, sources told the paper, and only see some appearances by Facebook founder mark Zuckerberg. CFO David Ebersman and COO Sheryl Sandberg will reportedly handle the bulk of the meetings.

Pricing never happens until the night before an IPO.

Yahoo has tried to crimp Facebook’s style by suing it for patent infringement – which is how Yahoo got a pre-IPO settlement out of Google – and now the Journal writes that national advertisers are having doubts about the effectiveness of ads on social media sites, leaving bankers to fret over their fashionable appraisals.

Facebook’s Q1 revenues were up 37% year-over-year to $872 million but down 7.5% sequentially. It blamed “seasonal trends.”

Google, which is worth close to $200 billion, did $36.5 billion in ad revenue last year.

12/28/2011 . you can always count on Van Halen to keep people guessing and that’s just what they did with their tour announcement over Christmas weekend.

Ultimate Classic Rock reports that in addition to announcing plans to hit the road in 2012, Van Halen have also seemed to hint at details of their reunion album. The disc could very well hit stores Feb. 7, if the graphic [released by the band] is any indication of what the band has in store for fans.

Then again, maybe not. It’s really not clear exactly what the “2.7.12″ refers to

Updated – 10:06 AM: According to Yahoo! Sports, Clippers guard Eric Gordon is not part of the deal that could send Chris Paul and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Eric Gordon isn't included in a revised Clippers-New Orleans deal for Chris Paul, league source tells Y! Sports.

— Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA) December 12, 2011

ESPN’s Chris Broussard, however, remains firm on his earlier report that the emerging star is in fact a part of the deal. according to Broussard, the Clippers do not want to upset Gordon if a deal for Paul falls through.

Source insists LAC offering Gordon, Kaman, Aminu & Minny's pick for CP. LAC dont want Gordon's name reported in deal in case it don't happen

Original – 9:23 AM: The Los Angeles Clippers have reportedly submitted a deal to the NBA that would result in the acquisition of new Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul, a source has told ESPN.com.

The trade would reportedly send emerging star Eric Gordon, front court players Chris Kaman and Al-Farouq Aminu, as well as the Minnesota Timberwolves’ first-round pick in 2012 to the Hornets in return for Paul. Sources have told ESPN that as part of the deal, Paul would agree to pick up his player option which would keep him in Los Angeles through at least 2012-13.

The disgruntled Hornets guard has been a focal point since the NBA has re-allowed transactions following the end of the NBA lockout. The 26-year-old guard has made it clear that he would like to leave new Orleans, however a deal for the former Rookie of the Year  has been hard to come by. The Los Angeles Lakers had twice agreed in principle to a trade with the Hornets and the Houston Rockets for a three-team trade that would allow Paul to team-up with fellow superstar Kobe Bryant, but those deals were nixed by the league.

The Boston Celtics and the new York Knicks have also expressed interest in the services of Paul, however neither team was able to put together a package to acquire him.

Since being drafted No. 4 overall by the Hornets, Paul has been an All-Star four times and has finished in the top-five in MVP voting twice. in 2007-08 and 2008-09 he led the league in assists, and in 2005-06 he was named the NBA Rookie of the Year.

Cavs Owner Dan Gilbert: Chris Paul Trade a ‘Travesty’

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports recently reported that the Los Angeles Angeles Lakers have had some contact with the New Orleans Hornets regarding point guard Chris Paul, but no formal offers have been made.

The Lakers and Hornets are supposed to talk again later this week, but it is generally understood that in order for the Lakers to acquire Paul they will have to part with center Andrew Bynum or Pau Gasol, and according to Yahoo!, preferably Bynum.

And as much as I respect and admire Paul’s game, it’s not enough to convince me the Lakers should trade Bynum for him, or Gasol for that matter.

Paul certainly fits the bill as an elite NBA point guard, and the Lakers are in desperate need of backcourt help, but in this case they can afford to settle.

The Lakers must upgrade the lead guard position if they hope to absolve themselves of last season’s playoff embarrassment and make a serious bid for the 2012 NBA Finals. but they don’t need a player like Paul, especially if it costs them Bynum.

There are numerous players the Lakers will be free to court due to the relaxed rules in the new CBA, and someone like Kirk Hinrich brings the same type of value to the team as Paul without risking the dynamic that forms the strength of the their core.

Sometimes it seems like people forget the Lakers won two championships in a row, in spite of Derek Fisher.

Lakers fans have been complaining about Fisher’s declining skills for several seasons, regardless of his clutch tendencies, but the team thrived on the backs of what is arguably the NBA’s biggest and most talented frontcourt.

And when you consider Lamar Odom and his cache of skills, you could probably add versatile as well.

A trade for Paul that includes Bynum or Gasol would mostly negate that advantage, and while the team will certainly improve on the perimeter, they will suffer in the paint, and unfortunately none of the Lakers recent championships was won because of point-guard play.

The price of acquiring Paul is not worth destroying the thing that makes the Lakers special. in fact, the Lakers should not even consider parting with Bynum or Gasol unless the return is Orlando center Dwight Howard.

The Yahoo story also mentioned the Lakers as possible suitors to Howard, and that doesn’t sound as far-fetched as it might have during the NBA lockout.

The owner’s dreams of a hard salary cap have gone up in smoke, but the sign-and-trade clause still exists, and while the league’s luxury tax was increased, it’s not enough to scare away the free-spending Lakers.

And a Lakers package for Howard that includes Bynum may be just as attractive as Chicago‘s “take any two or three players besides Derrick Rose” approach, or anything else another team could offer for that matter.

According to Yahoo!, the Lakers very well may be in the hunt for Paul as their next point guard, but in my opinion they should only make that move if they are really feeling ambitious. And the only thing that would induce that feeling is if Howard is already on the roster.

Of course, Paul would look great in a purple and gold uniform, but how would Gasol look alone in the paint without Bynum to back him up?

Lakers Rumors: Chris Paul Should Only Be a Target If Dwight Howard Is First

Facing increased competition from Google Maps and Yahoo Maps, the AOL-owned company launched MapQuest Vibe – or MqVibe — Thursday – in beta mode. using algorithms that take into account user votes, searches on MapQuest and cartographic data,

While paused, you can drag the map around to explore the surrounding area as usual. Each phase of the directions are highlighted as the route runs through, and you can jump ahead to the trickier sections by clicking them. You'll need the Google Earth

These can range from fitness training such as tracking a run or biking route or for social or business purposes such as coordinating a hike, planning a road trip, finding or giving directions to a business meeting and much, much more.

Imagine looking up directions to your favourite restaurant or museum in a city and your destination comes alive in Maps. Google's added 3D support to Street View in Google Maps, so you can look at your destination or really any place you'd look up in

Yahoo introduced redesigned search result pages yesterday. the new, simpler look adds tabs beneath the search box, allowing you to view images, video, or news or other results. Yahoo also lets you filter searches by time and trending searches.

These changes are getting to be a yearly tradition at Yahoo, as they rolled out updates around this time last year as well as 2009. Here’s a quick look at what’s new on Yahoo this year.

Yahoo Web Searches

On all Yahoo searches, you’ll see a new addition directly beneath the search box: tabs. Clicking on the tabs will take you to vertical search options that will vary depending on the query. Yahoo will return a varying number of tabs for any combination of Web, Images, Video, News, Blogs, Shopping, Sports, and Finance, all followed by and a More link to a dropdown menu containing hidden (and potentially irrelevant) tabs.

The tabs are simply a cosmetic change. in the past Yahoo linked to such vertical options above the search bar on the search results pages.

You can also filter by time (anytime, past day, past week, past month), and also see what related searches are trending.

Yahoo Image Search Results

In addition to last month’s image search enhancements, Yahoo has announced users will be able to see more Facebook images from public albums and filtering that lets you see how many hours or days ago an image was published. other filtering options include by size, color, and license.

Yahoo News and Blog Search Results

Yahoo has added more filtering to News search results. On the left, you can sort by sources and time – though the sources filtering is pathetic, offering only 10 sources and as the above example for a “Google” search shows it’s heavily skewed toward Yahoo properties and mainstream news sites. News videos will appear in the right column on some searches above the Sponsored Results.

Blog search results weren’t specifically mentioned in Yahoo’s announcement. the only noticeable difference is the addition of an option to filter by category.

Sports Search Results

As for Yahoo’s Sports search results, now when you search for a team, Yahoo will serve up links on the left to related athletes and videos on the right side just like in news searches.

A search for “Dallas Cowboys” returns links to Sam Young (which are atrocious search results, by the way), Miles Austin, and others, but oddly not stars like Tony Romo or DeMarcus Ware. Actually, looking a bit further, Yahoo has some work to do on related athletes on all NFL searches. a quick sampling of the other major sports teams (MLB, NBA, NHL) were mostly misses as well.

Video Search Results

Yahoo’s video search offers filtering by duration, sources, relevance, and date.

Bottom Line

Yahoo says there are more changes planned, which I assume means this time next year – assuming there still is a Yahoo search as we know it, especially in light of the firing of Carol Bartz and rumors of a Yahoo sale. This redesign is mainly a case of Yahoo deciding how to filter and make their Bing-powered search results look pretty. It’s hit or miss, and ultimately won’t rip away a significant amount of Google’s market share.
